The one and only difference is the way it's laid down on tape - DVCAM tracks are wider, so it drops out less and programme interchange is more reliable. This means you can play a tape back on any deck without dropouts and unreliability. I have seen programme interchange problems on miniDV equipment. You may come across a lot of half-truths and statements that are completely wrong about DVCAM, such as "the pictures are sharper" (they aren't), "you can't set the timecode on miniDV" (You can; this is a function of the VTR, not the tape format itself). As far as I can tell from practical experience the cassettes themselves are completely interchangeable, although it's probably a good idea not to record DV on something that's been used for DVCAM or vice versa.
