Guest Pavement Studios
I just built a mammoth camera that takes 16x20-inch negatives, and I'd like to photograph a somewhat post-apocalyptic industrial scene filled with colored smoke (similar to the purple and yellow and green smoke used during the helicopter landings in the film Apocalypse Now) -- does anyone have any recommendations on safe methods of creating colored smoke? I expect they were probably using some pretty toxic stuff in the 1970's. It'd be great to use a standard fogger/smoke machine, but I wasn't sure if it's possible to achieve colors. I hope there's a cinematographer out there that's had good results - none of my photographer friends have come up with any good suggestions other than smuggling smoke bombs into NYC. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Jeremy
Got any friends in the Midwest? Missouri sells fireworks year round, and you can light them off year round. Other states have similar laws. Lotsa colored smoke bombs for your photography needs. And if you're looking for industrial http://www.kcfilm.com/pops/locations/buildings.html ...16x20 inch negative?!?!?!?!?!!
Brent J. Craig
Check out army surplus stores for signaling smoke, also naval/boating stores for smoke flares. You may need a license to buy them, and/or you may need a certified pyro guy to handle them.
