Edward Maddox Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Could anyone recommend a camera repair place that could check out my late father’s H16 Bolex to give me a diagnosis and estimated cost to repair it? First, I should note that my understanding is that it is not a very valuable model. From what I can determine it is an H16 Standard (non-RX) built in 1949 (based on the serial number of 53850). Therefore, it appears that it would not make sense to invest a great deal. In light of that, I would definitely consider using a competent amateur who services cameras as a sideline. It has been sitting unused for 20+ years but, to the best of my knowledge, it had been working perfectly at the time it was put away. Yesterday I tried to test it but could not get it to run. Everything appears to be fine as far as I can tell and nothing looks or feels to be obviously broken except the button which seems a little sticky and doesn’t snap back like I think it should after being pressed. The camera had been stored unwound and the winder mechanism and spring all felt normal when I wound it back up yesterday. However, when I press the button, nothing happens. I have confirmed that all switches, levers, etc. are in the positions specified in the instruction booklet in the section on how to load film. I would be grateful for any advice. I live in the Baltimore/Annapolis/Washington area if there is something nearby. And, of course, shipping it would not be a problem either.
Premium Member Robert Ditto Posted July 17, 2011 Premium Member Posted July 17, 2011 Hello, I can service your Bolex for you. Service would include complete mechanism cleaning, re-lube, inspection and cleaning of film path, and polishing of the chrome trim. Service cost is $200, plus any parts that are required, and shipping. Sincerely, Respectfully, Robert M. Ditto
Edward Maddox Posted July 18, 2011 Author Posted July 18, 2011 Thank you for the information. It is very helpful. Unfortunately, because this is a non-Reflex camera, its value in good working condition appears to be only $50 to $100 based on completed eBay sales. Therefore, even if I was lucky and no parts are needed, the cost-to-repair would significantly exceed the camera’s value. Now that I know, I plan to sell the body for parts and will sell the lenses separately.
