Premium Member Matthew W. Phillips Posted July 23, 2011 Premium Member Share Posted July 23, 2011 I have gathered some decent sound gear together and have decided to do some free work in hope of building a resume so I might get paid a little something while doing my own projects and whatnot. I have a question. How many "freebies" should I do before I eventually expect a modest rate? Right now, I am not even charging a rental fee for the gear. Would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.
Tony Koretz
My suggestion is only do freebies for as limited time as possible, then start to charge out. The problem with doing too many is you cheapen your owwn brand, and get known as "the guy who does everything for free". It is very hard to start to charge people once you have done free jobs for them. They are likely to look at you as a cheap guy. Having said that, you need to gain experience. It's a balancing act!
