Inside/Outside Eyeline

Hi all,

 

When discussing camera placement with respect to an actor's eye line, what does it mean to specify "inside" or "outside"? What does that actually look like?

Any ideas? Just to give more info of what I'm talking about, David Fincher talked about it a couple of times, once in an interview when discussing different considerations for how to cover a scene, and once I saw BTS video of Robert Downey Jr. asking Fincher if the shot was going to be "inside or outside?". My guess is that outside would be more of a profile shot, and inside would be some kind of shot with the camera much closer to the actor's eyeline.
