How Do You Use a POLARIZING FILTER on an EX1 ??

Much to my dismay, when we were out on location shooting a lake scene, I put the Polarizing Filter on our EX1 and the lens hood would NOT fit back on. Even removing the UV Filter to give it more room was to no avail. The Polarizing Filter, even alone, was just slightly too thick to allow the lens shade back on. VERY poor design on Sony's part.

Later, I bought a rubber, collapsible lens shade, and even that collapsed "all the way" still caused vignetting when the lens was at its widest.

Be that as it may, have any of you conquered that problem, and if so, how? We MUST be able to use a Polarizing Filter on our EX1.

Thanks.
