Hendrikus De Vaan
Hi guys, Simple question, but, I have an Alan Gordon MkV directors viewfinder, which has the markings for standard 35mm - but the new MkVb seems to have changed this to super 35mm. Is there actually any difference in FOV between the two? I shoot primarily super 35mm sized digital sensors - in which case the sensor size differs slightly from camera to camera anyway, but it would be good to know if this is something I need to be taking into account. Many thanks! Harrie

You could just figure out a formula for adjusting the focal length markings to compensate. Since a director's finder isn't a lens finder where you put the actual shooting lens onto the finder, I think of it as just a ballpark idea of the framing anyway. Hendrikus De Vaan
Thanks David! So if I'm not mistaken, that's roughly 9% difference or thereabouts. So a 50mm becomes 55mm and so on right? In that case, like you say - since it's a directors finder - it's probably fine just to read it as is.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted August 27, 2014 Premium Member Share Posted August 27, 2014 Yes, a 50mm is more like a 54mm, or conversely a 50mm on the Super-35 camera would be closer to a 46mm mark on the regular-35 finder.
Hendrikus De Vaan
Ok, I was calculating in the wrong direction. That's what I get for trying to do math at 1am. Thanks again for the help, much appreciated.
