AlejandroGomez Posted March 10, 2015 Share Posted March 10, 2015 We'll rent a BMCC production 4k for this weekend ( a two days shooting). We have two options a 5D MKIII with the ninja 2 and the BMCC. I read a couple of articles and saw three reviews of the camera. We can't afford to shoot in RAW, so decided to shoot at 4k Prores HQ. It is worth it this option? We have two SSD of 240gb for the weekend and hard drives to do the backups. My major fear is the storage. Theres a big difference beetween the prores LT and prores HQ? 240GB are like a 43 min at 4kProresHQ according to this table: Another question, it's ok to shoot at 1080 with a camera like this? Where will this project finish? If it's just going to Vimeo or YouTube as a 1920x1080 video, then there's nothing wrong with shooting 1080p unless you plan on cropping or reframing in post. ProRes HQ is a 422 high bitrate 10bit codec, so it's a good compromise between large file sizes and retaining most of the color and subtle gradations of contrast from the sensor. If you are shooting a lot of greenscreen then you might consider shooting ProRes 4444 for those scenes instead since it will allow you to pull a cleaner key. ProRes LT is a lossy 8bit codec that is really meant to be used just for editing with smaller file sizes, not for recording. Freya Black Posted May 4, 2015 Share Posted May 4, 2015 ProRes LT is 10bit and all the ProRes formats are Lossy including HQ. ProRes is a lossy video codec basically. The main difference is bitrate. This video might give you an idea in a Youtubey context: You could maybe compromise and shoot in ProRes 422 instead of ProResHQ? You could also maybe mix it up and shoot a combination of ProRes 422 and ProRes LT depending on the shot. For example if there is a lot of details in the image such as leaves in the forest or something then you could shoot 422 but shoot ProResLT when there is less movement or detail. Of course that makes everything a bit more of a hastle over just shooting one format. Depends on how close to the wire you think you will get on disk space.
