Kenny Williams
I am having trouble trying to copy the Aesthitic of this painting and applying it to a scene. I wanted to know if a china ball could possibly work before I go out and buy one. Any advice would be helpful

John E Clark
This looks like a Maxfield Parrish, and as such, many of his paintings have a soft light and wrapping effect, so, a large softbox, or the like would be in order. However, as a painter, Parrish could 'control' the light far 'better' than a photographer may for a group shot like this. With sufficient lighting, and flagging, one may be able to get close. But this would require something bigger than a single china ball. Edited April 17, 2015 by John E Clark
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 18, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted April 18, 2015 A soft warm top light would work, but for a group shot like this you'd need a grid of paper lanterns overhead, not just one, depending on the size. But otherwise, overhead paper lanterns are a good idea, and setting the camera's color temp higher so that they render warm with tungsten bulbs in them. The people in the painting are underexposed somewhat, photographically, with the highlights coming from the large paper lanterns in the frame. Kenny Williams
I'm just going to have 2 people not a group I just need to copy "the 4 c's of lighting" color, quantity, quality, and course the direction of it. (Yes i know not 4 c's) and the framing for a scene.
