what is Anamorphic?

I have yet to see a good, basic explanation of the anamorphic format. Does anyone if there is one online?

Here are some good links that explain what anamorphic is and where it came from:

I'm sure there are others that can talk about the aesthetic value of using them, I haven't used them personally. The only thing I really know about them is that you get really cool looking lens flares off of them.
