Guest Anastasia Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 I am directing a short film shot during night-time. I've included two reference pictures for the look. I have spoken to quite a few DOPs and they are all advising me against shooting this on HD or actually any digital format to get this look. I would like to hear your opinions of the type of problems I could run into if I was to go for HD. It seems like I would actually need more lighting than shooting on film and I keep being warned about the blacks. Thanks for any advice.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted August 9, 2005 Premium Member Posted August 9, 2005 I don't see why you couldn't get that look in HD but could on film. You just may have to underexpose the dappled light a little more to keep the spots from clipping and increase the soft underexposed top fill to compensate (on the shot of the couple.) I might crush the blacks a little too. Looks like some diffusion might be needed, like a Soft-FX. The dreaminess of the shots may be a case where the P&S Technik Pro-35 adaptor and some Super-Speeds may help create a really shallow-focus look.
