Smaller Alternative to Panavision G Series Lenses

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

We're doing a movie this fall on Gs and S35 film. Some rigs are going to require a smaller digital camera, probably a Rialto, and smaller lenses as well. Can anyone think of a nice match to the softness of Gs? Anamorphic or spherical? Possibly PV Super Speeds?

G series are the smallest anamorphics Panavision has, most of them are 5-6" long. I don't think you'll find any other anamorphics much smaller, certainly nothing comparable in image quality. Kowas are about half the weight, but just as long, and significantly inferior IMHO. If you go for spherical lenses you will obviously have quite different characteristics, and you're also trying to match digital to film, so ideally you should test some options to see what your DP feels matches best at the stop range you'll be shooting. PV Super Speeds might work OK, but they can vary between focal lengths so again it's a question of testing first. Your Panavision contact should be able to offer you some advice on lens options too.
