  1. great work erik. do you do your own web design or do you have somebody do it for you? francisco
  2. i'm thinking about shooting a spec but can't afford permits. is there any cities around here where you don't need to pay for one? thanks francisco
  3. Hello everyone, I'll be shooting a commercial on hd and we are entertaining the idea of shooting day for night, it's all day exteriors on the front yard and front entrance of a house, there is a nice tree on the frontyard that provides good shade for the most part of the day. i was thinking that by using large silks, we could block most of the direct sunlight and use hmis to create a more controlled environment, we don't have a huge budget so having the neccesary lights might not be possible. does anyone have any experience on this kind of lighting set up? i would really appreciate it. francisco
  4. I thought the movie was terrible. Some of the dialogue, and the acting in general were very dissapointing. I heard that the production of this film was rather chaotic; they were dealing with last year's hurricane season, camera problems, etc. there is a good article on entertainment magazine, check it out. Anyway, i was thinking that maybe that was part of the reason for the final outcome, some of the scenes felt rushed, almost like they didn't have time to do more coverage or takes. i felt as if there was something that prevent me from caring for the characters involved in the story, it could have been the way it was written, the acting, the photography, i'm not sure. When compared to The Insider, it's like day and night.
  5. i will be shooting some plates to be used for rear projection eventually. we are shooting the film on anamorphic but i'm thinking i should probably shoot the plates spherical with a full aperture 4x3 format to cover as much area as possible. it will be my first time doing this and i will definetely check with an fx house before we go about it, any advice will be greatly appreciated. francisco
  6. jus wanted to give you guys an update. we transfered the footage last night. excactly what we expected, really jumpy and at times it goes in and out of focus, it's almost like the breathing certain old lenses have. the good news is that it looks pretty cool and we are gona use it in the video. we have plenty of steady footage to make it all work together. i'll put the video online when it's ready so you can check it out. my thanks to everyone that helped me out. francisco
  7. tha's a good point, david. that was our first conclusion, the take up in some of the mags felt a bit tense. we did have some loads where it felt ok and still created the same problem. i guess we could always do a DI after we do the final edit and go off the digibeta master, will that be possible? after all is a 3 minute music video. is there any post houses you guys recommend to do this kind of work? thanks
  8. Hello everyone, so, we were shooting this weekend, extremely tough shoot. we were near death valley, about 50 miles from baker. 110 degrees, at least. first half of the day went well, early afternoon the camera started getting really noisy, we checked some of the exposed film; either the pulll down claw or the registration pin was "pinching" the perf. it went on the rest of the day, could not figure out wthat was wrong, tried reloading the mags, the 1st started doing the loading, tried everything within our means. went to the lab today, they were able to develop the film, there is not significant damage to the perfs but you can see the "pinching" there. I think we are going to have serious steadiness problems because as the perf is being "pinched", the film is being pushed down and exposing the image in a different place sometimes even slightly bleeding into the next frame. The camera went back to the rental house and they could not recreate the problem we were having. I'm wondering if the film stock was defective or maybe it was a problem during the loading but these guys worked for me before and never had any issues. The film was kept cool and it wasn't exposed to serious heat until we were shooting, everyone i asked say that heat should not have been an issue. i guess the only option now is post. has anyone hear of fixing steadiness problems in post? it might be very costly. i'm thinking we should transfer the full 1.66 negative area to give room for shifting the image up or down as is need it. that's pure speculation, i don't really know if anything can be done about it. Thanks in advance for any suggestios, Francisco
  9. That's great. we had some camera issues, i'm gonna post some questions about it. Thanks
  10. Hello everyone, I wanted to see some samples of footage shot at slow speeds and then played back at 24fps. i.e. 1fps/3fps/6fps I want to do a shot of a road and i want it to look REALLY sped up. Does anyone have any references? Thanks a lot, Francisco
  11. Hello there, I'll be shooting a music video in super16 and wanted some input about film stocks. This is all day exteriors out in the dessert. I'm going for a contrasty look but not harsh. I bit like skipped bleach but without the grain. I'm leaning toward the slower stocks because i really want a clean image with a bit of softness to it, i might use some diffusion, i like sfx or schneiders gold diffusion, i'm more familiar with kodak but it might be a good oportunity to try fuji stocks. I'm a bit concerned about asa speed, specially as the day winds down, also, i think i might stick to a zoom lens and have zeiss speeds available in case i need the stop. zooms tend to be a bit softer than primes. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated, Francisco
  12. Thank you guys, sorry i wasn't more specific. We will be shooting out in the dessert, in a place call ranch oasis, we are going to check the location saturday. Mainly, it's a performance driven video, it's about the artist doing his song and four women dancing. So, i'm planning to do lots of coverage: hand held, possibly steadicam, jib arm. I want it to look slick, a bit edgy, but i need to be able to control the light. like Kevin said, i was thinking about doing the wide shots early or late in the day and then, use a 20x20 overhead for mediums and close ups. I don't think we can afford 18k but maybe 2-6ks and 2-4 ks. I was thinking about using a zoom instead of primes because they tend to be a bit softer and easier on the faces, hmi's could still be a bit harsh, unless you have the budget to use big lights with multiple frames. We will be shooting super16. Thanks Francisco
  13. Hello everyone, I will be shooting a music video that deals mainly with exteriors, I will probably be using and overhead silk along with HMI's and difussion frames in order to have more control and avoid harsh sunlight hitting the talent. Does anyone have any suggestions and/or experience doing this kind of set up. I know it could get expensive but it seems to me it's the only alternative for what we are trying to acomplish. Thank you in advance for your help, Francisco
  14. Thanks guys. I'm wondering if he used a print or the actual negative.
  15. Hello, Does anyone have any technical info on this music video. especifically, the dirt/scratch effect. Was that done in post? It looks pretty organic to me. I was thinking that a way to do it could be, to take 400ft of unexposed film and run in spools in a darks room, create all kinds of intentional scratches, dirt, flashes, etc, then develop the film and in post, layered it with the footage of the band. Or I guess, I could strike a print of the bands footage and just mess it all up. any ideas? Thanks Francisco
  16. Do you guys think is reasonable to somehow calculate a deduction for personal time one spends doing research for a project. I mean, other than the time you get paid by the production company to do preproduction. Sometimes, you might start doing your own prep before the official start date. Thanks
  17. I've heard that you can actually deduct the cost of "leasing to yourself" your office space at home. Also, what about all the time you spend researching before a shoot, I mean, that's a lot of work. And what about starbucks meetings, lunch meetings, fuel. I'm sure there is a fine line as to what is deductible and what isn't and that's where the accountant comes handy. I appreciate all the responses, keep them coming. Thanks
  18. Hello everyone, For all of you freelance Dp's, AC's, Operators, etc. What's your approach when it comes to running your business. Do you think is a good idea to create a corporation or LLC? How do you go about deducting expenses, purchases, office space, anything that will keep you from having to pay too much taxes to uncle sam. Do you file separate or with your wife? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Francisco
  19. Thank you D. Can I take a look at your websites? Francisco
  20. There are companies out there that make it really easy for anyone to build and host a website, for instance, Yahoo Site Builders; you don't even have to know HTML to build your site; the only problem is Yahoo doesn't support Mac and is very limited as far as templates ans design in general; does anyone know of any other companies out there that do that kind of work for a reasonable price? Thanks francisco
  21. Mainly, I want it to look clean and slick. I'm just a bit concerned about one scene which I'm visualizing a bit dark. I'm going to use soft sources mainly, I built some of those "covered wagons", the lights that Claudio Miranda mentioned in this website a while ago. They are great.
  22. Thanks John, I'm definitely not going to underxpose but do you think that shooting at T2, rating at ASA200, which is not an awful lot of light, will still give me a nice, clean image. Thanks
  23. Hello everyone, I'll be shooting a music video this weekend and I'm looking for a gaffer and !stAC. Unfortunately there is no pay, but it will be a good opportunity for someone to get more experience. We will be using an SR3, some experience with this camera preferred. We will be in one location the entire time, this is around north hollywood. please feel free to e-mail me at: bulgarelli@sbcglobal.net or call 626-226-7762 Thanks Francisco check out my reel at: prettypictures.com/franciscobulgarelli
  24. Hello everyone, How do these two stocks (7218/7217) compare as far as grain, contrast, shadow detail, etc I've used 7218 before but this time around I'm looking for a finer grain stock and would rather shoot a bit brighter (because of the ASA) and then bring it down in post. Does anyone have any comments or experiences to share about these stocks. Thanks
