  1. Can anyone tell me where to find the B&W negitive Super 8 film stock from KAHL? I've been to their website but the catalogue is in german. Plus the shipping fee would give me this face:  If anyone knows of a place in the states or canada I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks for your time-Jonnie :P
  2. I meant "immerse", not emerse. I'm a horrible speller. Sometimes I catch it, sometimes I don't...
  3. Knowledge will come...Do research. When we were your age we did not have this thing we call INTERNET. Take advantage of your resources, dude. Q-Why S8? A-Because it is a fabulous school in itself. A microcosm of the film world. Q-Because of the quality? A-The qaulity is the lesser of the film formats. BUT, it beats the crap out of MANY more expensive dv cameras. IF you want to work in film you must learn how to use film. How to manipulate film. Filmimg with S8 opens a gateway to a cherished world of alchemy and art. Know the roots of image capturing! FILM! Q-How do you get film on your computer? A-By a process called TELECINE, aslo known as TK. Again, do research on the internet. The internet carries much knowledge...go to Kodak and select the cinematography tab. Then choose the "motion picture imaging chain" button. You're a big boy and, believe me, you know more about navigating the web than I do. Get to it. Don't go out and buy a camera right away. Work on the things we all mentioned above FIRST. Yes, film is too expensive to just buy and go out to bulls**t with. Keep practicing your craft with the friends you have. Build a stable, by which I mean a dedicated group of friends, and keep shooting short projects. Try out things. But just keep coming up with new ideas and shooting them with your video camera for now. Keep doing those storyboarding drills I told you about and watch your progression. It does not happen over night. Later on ,in a year or two, down the road in highschool, when you guys have a more than rudimentary idea of all the aspects of filmmaking, and you have a film worthy story, then invest in film and such. This is pretty exciting for you, no? I know it is, but be patient and don't waste your hard earned money right now. You have everything you need with that video camera at the present. Keep reading stuff on the internet. With reading on filmmaking forums like this one and others knowledge will come. There's alot to digest!!! People making good livings at film still learn something new everyday. Every art form is this way, so just jump in and emerse yourself. Don't worry so much about the things you don't know now...it will come. Now go to bed, it's 11:26 at night. :P -Jonnie
  4. LYNCH will always be of the now  You will all see when INLAND EMPIRE is released. i was not here, i did not say this...
  5. Don't f*** with Welles! I have a friend who is a retired heart surgeon, his dad was a surgeon as well. When he was in Cuba (the dad) he stayed at the same hotel as Welles. He told his son years later the Orson got pissed-off and threw some furniture off his balcony and onto the pool deck! He was on the floor beneath Welles and in the room directly under him. The way it was told to me is he's sitting trying to eat and there are noises, phone ringing, a little bit of yelling. This went on for some time. Then quiet. When he began drinking his "after dinner" wine he saw a large chair fall from the corner of his eye....supposedly followed by some more furniture and yelling. Who knows...? Even if it's true this pales in comparison to the actions of Johnny Depp, AKA Hotel rooms arch nemisis!
  6. Do research. Google your head off! Here are some links I found on Google that will get you started: http://home.pacbell.net/mnyberg/super8mm/ http://search.ebay.com/super-8-cameras_W0QQfkrZ1QQfnuZ1 http://www.city-net.com/~fodder/s8mm/cameras.html http://www.rivalquest.com/super8/ http://www.newenglandfilm.com/news/archive...gust/super8.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_8_Film_Cameras http://www.thevideojunkie.com/s8/s8stock.htm http://www.super-8mm.net/2.html These are expensive (overpriced) but are the best cameras around in the super 8 format these days. Practically brand new! The company has its detractors (I, for one) but there is no doubt their cameras are nice. I put this link here just to give you an idea of how pro super 8 can be. These cams can take some good mods. http://www.pro8mm.com/main.php There you are my friend!!! :D My personal favorite is the Beaulieu series of super 8 cameras. But some peeps like Nizo and Canon...Like I said research is half the fun, so get to it...
  7. Remember the fued he had with Ebert? He told EBERT he would always be a fat wanna-be filmmaker after Brown Bunny was trashed on Ebert & Roper. Know what Ebert said? "Yeah, I may be fat now but I can lose the weight and you'll always be known as the guy who made Brown Bunny." Very funny.....BTW, Ebert is no longer fat...
  8. WOW!!! Takes me back...When I was your age me my friends made some films at the Water Wall just like you! Great location. We tried to get into Transco Tower at one point but they wouldn't let us in...bastards  Great to see kids in Houston doing something besides skating and drugs... Now to your film. I was not upset by your use of the zoom, but then again I love giallo films which are known for their myriad use of them. He was right about shot selection and variation. Put the camera on the ground and look up at your agent as he peeks around the corner to view the action. Things like this help alot. Get a book like SHOT BY SHOT and DRAMATIC MOTION by Steven Katz. These give examples of how certain shots carry with it an emotional pretense. This also goes for my thoughts on the "dialogue" question. Don't rush to put dialogue in your mini-movies. I argue whole heartedly against this. Learn how to tell a story with pictures first! I promise that it will make you a stronger filmmaker in the long run. The advent of "talkies" too soon permenantly augmented the future of motion pictures as we know it, IMHO. In other words, the silent cinema was unable to reach its apex before sound technology came around. This is my personal philosophy and you don't have to accept it, but my point still stands as far as your filmmaking right now. Words are words and acting is acting. Hone your skill at sound design and photography right now. Story doesn't matter. What you did in this film, people have been doing forever. It is called the "mcguffin" and is nothing more than a device or plot element that catches the viewer?s attention or drives the plot. Read about Hitchcock.... Here's a little more advice. Do drills. What are drills, you ask? Think about this. You already have advance knowledge of locations in Houston, right? Well, whenever you think up a scene or story action, storyboard it. Then, when you think it's just right, storyboard it again. Differently. Then do it again. Differently. You will gain a better understanding of film language this way. And your shorts will show a big difference. Don't try and make them beautiful, either. Just make them blueprints. No comicbook stuff needed. This will also sow the seeds for greater flexibilty in your ability to shoot film in a spontanious way that adds to artistic flair. Some of our greatest directors film without storyboards, like Spielberg, and when you see their finished product its astounding!!! Almost unbelievable.... After awhile show your parents what you've been up to and get them to invest in a super 8mm camera and some film for you. Perhaps a B-day? It's not as expensive as it seems. Ebay has viewers and nice cameras at reasonable prices. (but do your homework on the seller) All-in-all you did a fantastic job for just going out there and shootin' around on a weekend. Take our advice and critiques to heart, it will only help you. Please post whenever you feel you've reached the next tiny little rung in the ladder of maturation in filmmaking. It would/will be a great joy for us! Thanks for posting and have fun :P -Jonnie
  9. What kind of transfer did you get? If the film itself is fine then...well maybe the transfer sucks? This is a link to a discussion which may help you about understanding where flicker comes from: filmshooting This is a link for good S8 transfer at great price: single frame transfer I take no responibilty for these dudes, however. Read it and see for yourself. Hope it helps.
  10. Great book. The opera seen would have been real cool in the movie. Scott didn't even read the book. Dick was angry about this until he saw clips of the film (he died before its release) and changed his mind on the aspect of what film can do for books, not the other way around. All that mattered to him was the ultimate vision no matter its closeness to the original material. And for this, and what he did see, Dick backed the screenplay and Scotts vision after initial anger and distrust of the system in general. The whole thing about Scott and the way he "reads" scripts now happens to all filmmakers as they age,IMHO. At least the ones who started as stylists. The form IS content school. Which Scott was definitly a "part" of. Looking for good stories as apposed to good scripts. I believe there is a chasm between the two. Not to say Aliens or Blade Runner were bad scripts. The Aliens script reads like the barest of spec scripts which left tons of room for stylistic interpretation. Another interesting thing, if you watch earlier films by these kind of filmmakers, the spoken word count is alot less than their newer films. I'm not sure if that means anything or not, but it's interesting to say the least. Uh-Oh! I think I'm off topic now....
  11. I didn't say I believed in god...Maybe I was trying to convert my pastor to atheism? :P No really, I'm an atheist but much of my family are Lutheran. I went to a Lutheran school until 1st grade, the whole thing. I actually like the pastors at church. Cool dudes. I just ended up a "nonbeliever". And I have no ill will towards the church whatsoever, and them, me. I can't remember one bad experience there as a child or ever feeling uncomfortable. Whenever I go there to pick up a family member, if I see Pastor Hawke, we'll get a little rap session going. Very fun. This conversation actually took place after a friends kid was baptised. P.S. Yes, I can read satanic messages. It all started when I was a kid and played my "BLOOD SAUSAGE" record backwards....
  12. I must agree with the captain on this one. Also, I feel Kundun belongs on an"Underrated List", if there is one on this forum. One of my favorite Scorsese pictures after Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, the ganster flicks. But everyone has an opinion..... :D Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Blade Runner is just plain bad-ass. IMHO. Peoples and Fancher are also bad-ass. Again, IMHO.
  13. What kind of camera do you have? Did you have it checked? (Guillotine shutter ?) Changes in exposure? Lots of things can cause this including bad processing, however I doubt this is the case for you. The best thing to do, especially before shooting a film, is have your camera serviced. This is something you should always do after purchasing a super 8 camera. Most of these things in use today were made before I was born! Also, read up on your camera so you know all the ins & outs. Read up on exposure techniques. Other than that, tell us the circumstances under which it was shot. Maybe someone with more experience will be able to pinpoint the problem. Good luck on your short. :) -Jonnie
  14. Once, when he was introduced to Chiang Kai-chek, he muttered that he had forgotten his laundry. For those of you who don't "get it", trust me. This wasn't a nice thing to say. What a guy...
  15. Yes, thanks for the corrections. I should probably research a little before posting.....instead of just wingin' it. That is funny and sad at the same time, but just plain typical for Jack Warner.
  16. Yeah, this shows how important it is to expose correctly for S8. (well, any film really...) And to light for S8.....But also how forgiving film stock in general is when overexposed. The overexposure shot is workable whereas the underexposed, well maybe it's good for a certain "look" but wouldn't fly as an accident in exposure.
  17. Heavens Gate! I put Gates of Heaven...I must not know what I'm saying if I can't even remember the title of the film in question!!! My mom was right, I'm an idiot! I don't think Ishtar is sloppily made. I can't stand the dialogue, situations, anything. I think it fits perfectly for " a film that just doesn't work". Horrible may be too much....to say publicly. I still think its a steaming pile. Another one is American Psycho. I don't know why it doesn't work...I actually like the movie. Maybe the subject material and the way it is presented is hard for me to wrap my head around. Yeah, I think thats it. Good film thats just hard for me.
  18. Hate group? I don't feel hate, ever. This was a jovial response to another members post. My pastor actually told me this as an aside to a conversation we had about the book Genisis and the Darwin book Origin of the Species. He thought it funny, so did I. While the humor may be sophmoric there was no intent to piss you off. As for the validity of the post on this thread, your comments are duly noted. -Jonnie :)
  19. Dear Jesus, Why did your dad put dinosaur bones in the earth? -Jonnie Dear Jonnie- Nice to hear from you. Been awhile. In response to your querry, dad put Dinosaur bones on earth just to question your faith. Write back soon. Its been too long. -Jesus P.S. Stop touching yourself.

Are talking about my f***ed? <_< No really, it's , "...you're all f***ed..." As in You ARE all f***ed. " :P F***ed isn't a noun.... Just messin' with ya. I had to make a post on this thread. It has become a right of passage to all members it seems.
  21. Great subject... :P My favorite "failed " movie has to be Gates of Heaven. I think it is a fine film, with exceptions. The bad publicity made things go far worse than if the movie was released without it...(duh) I remember the news doing spot interviews with people who just left the theatre saying, "...it was the worst film I've ever seen...", " ...horrible production values...", etc. You should consider yourself blessed if this is the worst film you've ever seen. My point being the public went into it just to be part of a flop. Sounds stupid, but its true. Kind of reverse cultural phenomenon. It is hard to remember but this film was a house hold name BEFORE it came out, for all the wrong reasons. No one gave it a chance. The small portion of people who went to see it WANTED to see a huge catastrophe! Also, Ishtar. Horrible film. This is were I'm like you, wondering how in the world they are making this without a hint, a faint whif, of the poop they're putting on celluliod. This happens alot, when two good actors have wanted to work with each other for a looong time but "the right project never seemed to be there." Then they get together and produce a steaming pile. Hoffman has done this before, remember Mad City? With John Travolta? Crap. <_<
  22. Hi German. I agree with Grainy. Too long. Maybe if the pace was different the length wouldn't be an issue. I think you have some beautiful stuff, but found myself bored half way through. It doesn't seem you edited for effect (i.e.-reaction) but instead just show-cased some very nice footage. Remember most of the people who will see this in the biz want to be entertained while watching it. Good stuff but it doesn't sell you well enough in its present state. I say make it a minute or so long and re-edit it with the knowledge that this one minute is all you have to get a prospect interested. Thanks for sharing, you are indeed a talent. :D
  23. Huh...Its still funny to me that Chirac is the"conservative" in France. Over here (America) he would make Ted Kennedy look like a Bible thumpin' neocon......no offense intended. It makes me wonder what the "Liberals" are like over there. Oh, well, politics in general are always screwed up, I guess. ;)
  24. :D This thread is funny :P I would like to say KODAK needs a B&W negative S8 stock. Well, maybe not need, but I totally want it  Why no B&W neg. ?
  25. This weeks TIME has a good article on this very subject. It's not eye opening but has comments from Speilberg, Shayaman(?), Rodrigeuz, Lucas, Soderberg,...short, like 4 pages with pics.
