  1. Just got back, DiCaprio kicks ass. I know this is not a actors forum but my geezus! The look, well it did not 'detract' from the story so in essense you could say it added to it, of course you'd have to believe 'neutrality' does not exist (like me). It was lit pretty "straight", to me. You know what I mean? Thats not a bad thing. It kind of grounds it out as more 'realisticly contemporary', whatever that load means....I have to see it again honestly. It was entertaining. I'm actually mad at myself, but DiCaprio is becoming a very, very fine actor! I was consumed by him, not the plot or the mechanics of filmmaking! I certainly did not pay close attention to the cinematography, which was the whole point of my visit....It seemed like 'practical' heaven on the int. Nice. Aww well, perhaps Tuesday I can get away for a second peekaboo! Focus, Jonnie, focus... Overall I'd give it an A. The movie delivers the goods for the price of admission. Again, I'm gonna view it a second time for a more thorough combing. I kept going back to KUNDUN as well and it turns out to be a favorite of mine...who knows... Super 35? I'm dumb...help a brother out....
  2. Ummmm, I'm not trying to "defend" anyone here, we are all grown-ups who can do that for themselves. But I've seen Butterflies and it was quite good. Beautiful B&W, anamorphic, nice acting, strong direction. Some people walk the walk, others talk the talk......Jacoby can do both, he earned that right by actually "creating" in the field which he is now critizing.....what have you people filmed lately? Wanna share with the class? You see, having your mouth perma-stuck to the teet of any artist (even the great Scorsese) just goes against the whole point of "experience". Your ridiculous comments regarding (I assume) Tarkovsky should be taken with a grain of salt by anyone with a brain. Every artist goes through peaks and valleys regarding the creative process, why can't Scorsese? Or are you just using this thread to launch personal attacks against another....? How convenient and cowardly.... BTW, I have not seen The Departed. I am a fan of Scorsese, I just didn't get hyped at all for this film....Who knows why? If I do see it, you can bet I'll return to dish out my reaction. Uneducated as that might be... I hope not to encounter such venom love it or hate it...
  3. Never used them, but judging by their name they must "care" about B&W film. And since they are not too big I'd also imagine that they care very much about their end results. http://www.blackandwhitefilmfactory.com/ I'm a huge fan of B&W, for many reasons. Other people on this board have mentioned them with kudos. I have the site bookmarked for when I get around to filming some tests. Let us/me know how they treat you and their quality of work if you do go with them, it would be appreciated. -Jonnie
  4. There is one on sale at ebay right now for 5,500. It has 12 lenses, 3 of them are fast. Single side follow focus,....what am I doing? Here is a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/Kinor-35H-35mm-movie-c...1QQcmdZViewItem It looks kinda junky but who knows. You could turn around and sell the lenses if you just want the body, but the market seems to be flooded with unwanted oct-19 mounts....Or just resell the whole damn thing when you're finished with it. Anyway, just trying to help.
  5. The Scorsese 'Cape Fear' was badass... The same scene breakdowns and all, yet completely original from the Mitchum vehicle. All the inuendo, sexuality, etc. The "theatre" scene is awesome. Anyhow I'm in the same boat. All we need to do is look at the new PSYCHO and reel in terror from that giant monstrosity! Funny, it was made pretty much shot for shot and yet it still has no soul to speak of. It's an absolute cosmic joke! How is it possible to make the same exact film and it sucks? Van Sant mastabatory cinema. Seriously. They are also remaking 'Halloween'.....WTF? All John Carpenters films are being remade lately. I'm sure he doesn't care too much, he gets a fat check and knows his legacy will remain intact from the inevitible sucking of the new films. I'm in favor of 'retracing' certain story lines, just not absolute remakes. A remake is a logical pretzel."Its so good we have to remake it! Its a classic!" But if it is in fact so good why remake it at all? A film they should 'retrace' is the Zulu war films made by UK studios. "Zulu" is awesome and that basic premise would make an equally awesome film with todays filmmaking prowess....You could have a hundred war films based on Normandy and they'd all be different. I guess thats what I'm trying to say.
  6. Ahhh......Now I get it. I've lived in Houston, Austin,....My parents live in MS. Quite pretty. But I feel many people have never read a whole book, even in school. Sad really, considering Oxford was the intellectual capital of the south for so long. Faulkner, Foote.... :( I just don't like the people who seem to think they are "better" than the average southerner based on their perceived lack of intelligence combined with their blind faith in anything printed in the bible. I've learned a whole lot about life in general from old men who could not write their own name to save a life...The power of oratory is nothing compared to a man who has been "through it all". I could go on about the superiority complex of "city-folk" but I digress...City life is my way, too. Director commentaries are just a funny idea.....The only useful ones are from indy filmmakers. "The Following" was a good one. Nolan explained alot about 'how-to' indy filmmaking. Zero-budget, or at least micro-budget feature length filmmaking. Some good stuff. Roman Polanski on "The Ninth Gate" is just classic. "Excuse me while I eat some chocolate....I love it so.(audible munching) I also like a glass of wine....", etc. What about the film, Roman? Funny.
  7. Sweet, Kevin! Can you tell us about your battery options. What do you have? How do you film slow-mo(speeds above 30fps, like 50fps)? Two different battery packs? Or a pack that can switch voltage? What brand? Still loud enough to scare an actor into thinking a monster is on set? I just don't want a camera soooo loud that an actor can't think. This is the one thing that's kept me from buying it as an MOS cam. 55dbl!!! And I've heard some can be even louder depending on their history. Crazyness.....I want one for anamorphic work. Rent one sound cam and use this for MOS. Thanks for sharing :) -Jonnie
  8. Both of those books are good but conventional, placing them in the "student/early-learner" catagory. I read Shot by Shot when I was 16 if that helps at all. Nothing wrong with the book. It is a well done piece. But like I said it is a little on the "beginner" side of the coin. Cine Motion is basically part 2. It goes into more intricate blocking and coverage techniques, but again, is meant as a beginning course book. They actually use Shot by Shot in the UT at Austin film school. Actually, I was just thinking, if you are interested in this kind of book for "pros" a Directors bio might be a good bet. Scarecrow press put out books on De Palma, Riefenstahl, Malick, etc. that covers their personal grammar. Some good bios carry much insight into the creative process.....hope this helps a little.
  9. Hope this helps. http://www.twistedtracks.com/
  10. I like John Carpenter talking about how hard it was to get beer on the set of "The Thing". Funny stuff...Raging Bull wasn't so bad. Michael, there is nothing wrong with Alabama. Of course if you just moved there from New York I see how it would affect your psyche. The grass is always greener.....
  11. Sweet expository! There should be a anthropology course about these characters. Still, where does 'chav' come from? What is its origination word?
  12. Nevermind, I found your old posts about the site links. Is the price still the same for this ? Kinor=2500; Konvas=1350?
  13. I can not answer your question, however I'm equaly stoked about this product. I'm pretty sure it's TOP-NOTCH material. The Aranda Group has a very good reputation with their services/products. I actually am thinking about this very hard. The price is right and it basically brings the Konvas up to pro status regarding its electronics. If I already had a Konvas it'd be a done deal. The resale value is worth it alone. Bruce, is the the noise level still about 55 decibles? Is the film pull down mechanism completely new? Also, is there a page for the Kinor version and if so will you put up a link for us. Thanks. Very stoked about your product! -Jonnie
  14. To me, a rich white kid who apes the style of inner city youth(black) and talk like they grew up in a ghetto(even though they dont have exposure to the culture beyond a cd) need a butt kicking. It's like putting on black-face....Basically I'm saying, to me, it is mocking a culture in a twisted way. They do it to be cool not to mock, I know. However it comes off as so generic and rediculous and fake that its more like 'play-acting' a black person. Like when little kids used to buy toy guns and dress up as cowboys, but this is just sick... Again, its like 'impersonating' a stereotyped african american or something. I don't know, I think if I were black I'd be annoyed and maybe offened by this 'white' behaviour. I guess 'skateboard' culture isn't cool enough to white kids anymore, they have to emulate murderers who make a living rapping on albums. Sad. Maybe this is more of a white/youth american thing. I actually have been called the "N" word by a white kid before. True. He said in a "friendly" jesture(as is so popular today..)but I still wanted to kick his ass. Very upsetting. What the hell is wrong these days? The world has gone mad in more ways than war!
  15. What are you talking about? Everyone here has said "rich" enough times to spin Bill Gates head around twice! Everyone knows they wear expensive (yet gauche) clothing....rich kids here do the same immitation routine, copping black youth style. I guess it happens everywhere? I still need to know what 'chav' means. Anyone?
  16. I went to this site and found it funny(clothing  ), but I still have no idea what a 'chav' is. Is this word short for something? Completely lost Texan here. Help a friend out... It just looks like white kids that ape hip-hop fashion to me....am I missing something? Are they basically rich uneducated kids running around or what? Do they annunciate? Can they count? They look like football thugs who wear the latest Tommy....funny, indeed. What the hell is it? Help....
  17. "I'm just quoting a source from the military analyst and author James Dunnigan." Daniel- Bringing 'facts' into this is unfair! Who do you think you are quoting a reliable source? No really, point taken.... :P Still though, no love for Germany? They have to be on someones 'list'.., right? Man, I'm taken this too hard...
  18. Yes,'actual' combat power is determined by my "based on" cue in the previous post... It's funny how you forget about Germany. Didn't we do that awhile back... :o They produce some of the best Fighter jets on the planet. They don't copy us like other nations, they innovate. The Swedes are also badasses in aviation design... South Korea does not belong on your list as a single entity, uh-hum, the USA has been there forever... :( ....If they are so good, why are we there? Trust me, its not that popular here in America. Yes, even among the right..Their government(not to mention Japans government) really, really want us there.
  19. Haha  -no connection, whatever! Lawyers are a slimely bunch, but we work with them, local gov., private industry, etc. I'm most proud of my latex mask making ability, however. Oh, also you could call me 'Jon'. "John" is not my name. Its pronounced 'Jon-a-bear', but I don't really care. Just in case you wondered...I get mail with "John" written on it all the time... I wouldn't worry about Bush invading Canada...umm, I mean Bushy. We could picture it, though...for fun. Bush invades Canada to pry our attention away from Iraq. Then he says he did it to rid gays from the Canadian military around election time for the southern vote....hehehe Well, I'm sure you could write a better treatment. Thats still funny, though... We're not done measuring yet! oh, and don't stand so close, Daniel is getting nervous.  Just kidding Daniel....you are right. The "BOATS" deserve more credit. My apologies to the British people...
  20. "human knots" that sounds sweaty... Yes, the Joint Task Force 2 is very good. As matter of fact, the USA gave them medals for their duty in Afghanistan. But, again, this is a statement that is overreaching. In reality there is not much difference between Delta, JTF2, SAS, ect., as we all cross-pollenate training. I don't think we will be fighting each other any time soon....
  21. As far as cops still using film, I've been told its because of the archiving aspect as well as the neg. being a "true hardcopy".....Gov. officials use it for this reason as well, I'm told. (I see cops in my work sometimes...) I asked about scanning and was told its rarely done. Everything is still "tangible" for "security" reasons. Its funny that a man with a mannila envelope is still more secure than a hard-drive or disc. Hehe.. About films death,................Print has been dead for a decade I'm told. I guess I'm lucky to find all these archaic retail shops that sell "books".... Fact: we use more paper now then 10 years ago. Ok, I just guessed, who knows for sure. But it seems like it... I don't think film will totally die out any time soon. The balance of power will shift of course, but many people will still cry out for film, hence demand. Capitalism will create to profit, don't forget that. And think about 50 years from now......film will make a "comeback" in the future arthouse. In the future(I feel), films popularity will be cyclical as the moods change from one gen to the next. Choice may narrow, but film will be manufactured for a long, long time. I figure about two generations after the last motion picture camera is made film will say goodbye. And it seems that they are still making and innovating the film camera, right? Penelope? Film just works. Like paper, it will always be loved. Appreciation for the scratch of a pen, the alchemy of emulsion, is what seperates us from digital-people. Homo-analogous? Maybe.
