  1. So, these just happen to fall from the sky and end up in my hands. They have definitely been sitting for over 20 years. I blew them out with a rocket and cleaned them up. I looked all over and searched and couldn't find any information about the mount or what camera they were used for. I'm guessing filmo or mitchell. So here are some questions: What mount are these? Are they decent lenses? Could they be converted to PL mount and used today? Are they worth anything? Just a little research before deciding if I want to keep them. I mostly used super8 and 16. Thanks in advance!!! 2. ha ha ha very cool. I have a fully arri S package and a bolex package. I also have about 2000 feet of 16mm film in the fridge dying to be used. I hear fotokem does developing for .08 a foot for film students. I had to laugh, I just moved to LA a month ago and last week I was driving in burbank and my girlfriend wrinkled her nose and said, "what's that smell?" I said it smelled like the inside of a film can, just then we drove by the fotokem sign. That whole place smells like film, even outside on the street. I hope to shoot some 35mm for the experience. I don't know why, just sounds like fun and I want to see the footage. The only issue is the transfer, short ends are cheap, fotokem student discount is cheap....but even a 35mm telecine to hard drive is expensive.
  3. Great Site! I think I'll definitely look into getting one of those arri's for $150. The konvas would be cool too, but it's a little more. Thanks for the advice, maybe someday i'll get a mitchell for the fun of learning to thread it.
  4. So I want to shoot some 35. I have my own bolex 16mm and arri S which I have shot with a ton, so I feel this step shouldn't be too difficult. I just moved to LA and now I can rent some cameras. I was looking online and for under $150 a day I can rent a fully set-up Mitchell NC or a Motor Driven Eyemo with Mags. Which one should i rent? Most likely for a no budget music video. Hope to shoot 800 feet or so. That would make around 9 minutes of footage for a 3 minute song. I feel the eyemo would be easier to load and have newer nikon lenses. I'm worried about the complex Mitchell loading and that the lenses are probably old as dirt. Mainly this would be a reel builder and a chance for me and some other film geeks to try 35. I only found rates this cheap with Alan Gordon, anyone have any other rental houses in LA with comparable rates? Also I'm wondering if there is any way to get around insurance? Like putting down a $1000 deposit or something. I'm just a young 20's film geek that wants to try 35, I'm not strapping a $10,000 35mm Arri to the hood of my car and jumping it. Thanks! Kirk
  5. Thanks for the help guys, I guess I'll keep my cash for food and keep send out my resume. It's not like I've never been on a pro set before, I've been on quite a few, it's just that all my connections are in SF. I might call some of them and ask for numbers of friends down here. I agree with the, no pay jobs don't often lead to pay jobs. I don't want to be the most knowledgeable one on set, I want to be the one struggling to keep up and learning constantly. Like cheech and chong said in their movie Things are tough all over, "Things are tough all over."
  6. I just moved to LA and I'm trying to get some paying PA gigs on commercials or features. I've done a two years of national commercial PA work in SF and three weeks on Four Christmases up there as well. What I'm trying to say is I'm an experienced PA looking for paying work in a new city and I'm having some trouble. I don't mind doing DP for free while I build up my reel and learn, but it's hard for me to take a step back and do gopher work for free. I was wondering if I should post up on ProCrewBook and eat the $59? Or should I keep pounding the ground on CL and Mandy? Should i start working for free just to make some connections? Any other work websites I should check out? Thanks in advance! Kirk www.iamkirk.com Kirk@iamkirk.com
  7. I had some friends who wanted me to video tape their band playing at the house of blues. I insisted on filming the whole thing in super8 instead of holding a lame-o video camera. I grabbed my easy discreet chinon so no one would get weird. I took what I got out of the whole concert and attempted to sync it to one of their songs. So, lots of it doesn't match, but i tried. Specs: Chinon 132 Pxl camera 18 fps Auto Exposure only 1 roll Tri-x, 1 Roll Plus-x I then had it processed at flim/video services in MN. Projected on the wall with Chinon Projector Shot the wall with HDD JVC Crappy video Camera Edited in FCP. On export I got some glitches, but it took so long and the band had a deadline. I hope to get a cleaner edit with out glitches soon. definitely rough, I know, but fun non the less! Youtube sucks, but it quick to load: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUSa-CLXzdw larger better definition on my website: www.iamkirk.com/publicists.mov
  8. I just finished up my new Beta Website. I know there's some tinkering to be done, but any first impressions? Comments on my reel? Thanks! Kirk www.iamkirk.com
  9. Didn't get any interest so I'm throwing it up on elame. I'll end the auction early if someone has a decent 1014, 814, or other nice super8 camera. http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-Scoopic-16mm-Mov...%3A1%7C294%3A50
  10. I picked up this scoopic this fall and promptly shoved it into my closet full of cameras. I'm trying to move down to LA in march so I need to thin down my 16mm collection. The camera looks pretty sweet, I've never shot a scoopic before and I guess I never will. Some wear and tear on the outside, it's missing a few tiny screws by the battery compartment. Leather handle is great, the inside is very very clean, pressure plate looks good. I never got a chance to shoot it because it's missing the battery charger. I was looking for a manual so I could build one myself or use a power supply but I need the cash instead. Camera is untested and sold as is. Camera has "U.S. GOVT" Scribed on bottom. Du-all does a full rebuild for $300 and so does this guy (www.canonscoopic.com). Super cheap rebuild if for some reason she doesn't power up great when you get a charger. This guy, (http://www.filmclass.com/scooby/) shows you how to build new batteries and chargers super cheap as well. I just don't have time to spend on a camera I'll never really use because I have an Arri already. Package comes with: Original Scoopic Case Canon Scoopic 16mm Camera 2 Batteries, one great condition, one taped in electrical tape. (Like that when I got it.) Canon Scoopic external battery pack, both batteries go inside. Lens Hood, not original. PM me an offer. I would love a Canon 1014 or 814 ELECTRIC or a Nikon R10. Would definitely consider other higher end super8 cams. Let me know if you have any questions! 11. I really like the SG PRO, pretty cheap with great results! We use canon FD lenses and it's a great little rig. If i had lots of cash I'd get a P+S with PL Mount. We shot this spec with the P+S, PL MOUNT and ZEISS Super speeds. P.S. we use a HVX 200 with FS100. http://gate2gatemedia.com/converse/
  12. Just watched Christmas Vacation and The King of Kong, Fistful of Quarters. Chevy was a comedic genius when he was on the nose candy, what's your favorite quote? Mine is: "Hey Griswold, where you going to put a tree that big? "Bend over and I'll show ya!" "you got a lot of nerve talkin to me like that Griswold!" Seth Gordon made an amazing film with KOK, but I worked on his latest feature, Four Christmases and it came out pretty terrible, what happened? Holiday movies with the family is always fun.
  13. I need a repair manual for a scoopic, anyone have the pdf? I found some old posts with links to a pdf download, but they've all been taken down... any help would really be appreciated! Thanks! Kirk
  14. Thanks guys, So my genius plan was to start on the shoes and jib up to the golden gate bridge as the surfer ran into the ocean..... the jib couldn't go high enough, I needed an extra two feet. In post we tried a lot of different versions but ended up reversing the jib up shot and having it end on the shoes. I learned a lot though, never leave your most complicated shot for the last one of the day. Thanks for the input! K
  15. I didn't even think before posting, vimeo kinda sucks. Here's the production companies web site. http://gate2gatemedia.com/converse/
  16. I'm so excited! Looks amazing man! By the way, I'll be moving down to LA in March! I can't wait to shoot some more projects with you. Great teaser, I can't wait to see the whole thing. Kirk

  18. Wow, has time passed. I haven't been on this board forever. I was building a new reel and I forgot that I never posted my newest project. We shot this a couple months back in San Francisco. Crew of 8 amazing people and I think it was our best short to date. http://vimeo.com/1524532 Technical Specs: Hvx-200 with firestore P+S 35 adapter with rented Zeiss Super Speeds Mini jib for the final shot Best! 19. So I've shot a few things with a P+S with PL mount and ziess super speeds, but we decided to buy some less expensive gear and give it a whirl. We bought a SG PRO, a few old canon EF mount lenses and some other goodies. We got everything set up and ready to shoot some tests, but whenever I change the f-stop on the Canon lens nothing happens. I took off the lens and looked through it and adjusted the f-stop and no blades are moving. I've checked that it is set to manual and tried it on all the lenses, the blades don't move on any of them. Is there a little trick I'm missing? I've searched around and no one has an answer for me yet. I don't want to use the HXV iris after spending all this money on new equipment. What is everyone else doing? When I used the P+S and Zeiss glass we had it set up by a rental house and everything was easy as pie. Side note: I'm also wondering how to check our "back focus" or how to set it up. The SGPro manual doesn't say anything about it and I haven't found a tutorial online. My buddy with a letus was talking about how hard it was to set and now I'm concerned about our brand new rig. Thanks in advance for you answers! Best! K
  20. So, I just picked up a Canon scoopic from a guy on the list. Good condition, grey handle one, with original case and batteries. "US GOVT" carved in the the handle. It has no charger for the batteries. I looked a lil online and didn't find just the charger, lots of re'celling services. Looks ready to shoot, no corrosion, or lens fungus. I already have an arri s and a couple of bolexes. I don't know if I really need a scoopic laying around too. I may sell it, but I doubt I'll get a decent price without shooting a test roll and check it running. any one have a source for charger? kirk
  21. So, I've been planning for months to enter the SF 48 hour film festival and in the last month ended up shooting a spec commercial that took all of my money. All of it. A few days ago I went on the website planning to put the entry fee on my credit card and they are full, should have seen this one coming. I'm looking to join in with a team who is already entered. I took the weekend off work have been gathering grip and other supplies for the shoot. I am a DP/Director who has lots of experience as an AC with the HVX, 35 adaptor (thanks to last weekend), some familiarity with the RED, I know the DVX inside and out, as well at the XL1 and GL2. I have two 600w tungsten lights with umbrellas and a soft box. I have some misc gels and diffusions, black wrap etc. I have a GL2 and nice tripod, you probably have something better though. I got lots of costumes, army fatigues, masks, i think a firemans jacket as well as a BFA in Cinema Production from SFSU. Looking to join a laid back team of filmmakers for a weekend of fun, creativity and an awesome movie. Anyone, anyone? I may double post in the general forum, I don't know how many of the guys and gals from SF post in here. 22. Thanks so much man! I appreciate all of your help and suggestions. I'll be sure to post the rough edit. On my way to get some glass filters! kirk
  23. So, We're gearing up for a shoot on Monday and we ran some tests today with our gear. I've never used a P+S adaptor before and had some questions. Our Setup: HVX 200 with FireStore P+S 35mm adaptor set of zeiss Super speeds Mattebox Everything outdoors looked really bright, even when I was all the way at F-16. 1) Can I use the ND filters built into the HVX or should I use external glass ones? (PS, I don't have any yet.) We've been shooting with the internal F-stop completely open. 2) Can I use the internal f-stop in conjunction with the 35mm lens? (is this a bad idea?) 3) When we were shooting some bright blue sky, it almost seemed as though it was flickering..... I thought the spinning ground glass would smooth things over...any suggestions? 4) I was tooling around in the scene files to get some good outdoor exposure...anyone have an outdoor scene file that they swear by? I searched old threads and all over the internet and the manual we have doesn't seem to answer these questions. I really appreciate any quick responses, because we're going back out tomorrow for more tests before the big shoot. Pardon my NOOBness, I shoot a lot of 16 and this is a first with all the bells and whistles of HD. Now that you read all that, here's a quick test we shot today asking all of those questions in camera. http://www.vimeo.com/1283123 THANKS AGAIN! Kirk
  24. I'm going to be shooting a Spec Commercial on July 7th and we're putting together our package now. One day shoot, with our HVX and a grip truck from DTC, maybe a sick Jib. We've found a lot of places renting Brevis adapters, but we're looking for maybe a redrock or Lettus. Brevis would be cool too. Anyone in the SF area willing for rent a lens package, some rods and maybe a follow focus? We have the HVX and a Firestore, but we want to bump up our game..... Best! Kirk
