  1. I've used the GH5 on 10 bit 4:2:2 mode quite a bit and the microblocking is insane even on 1080p. I have no idea how anyone uses these cameras to create a decent image. Coming off a Blackmagic Pocket cinema camera which has zero microblocking ever, the GH5 seems like a toy codec wise. Everyone I know who gets a decent image from one, is using an external recorder.

Is this mitigated with the GH5s? So if an external recorder is used, there is no problem or less of one? Considering this camera for micro budget doc. Might have to look elsewhere.

  2. I have listed this camera on ebay. Tripod not included. Comes with lens, batteries, case, chargers, and many spare parts. Totally functional.

  3. I second the vote for the NIkon D3400. Having a camera with full manual control is the most important thing, because you have a lot more control than an auto camera and it helps you in the learning process. Such as; what does ƒ stop do, what does shutter speed do and so on.....

In regards to the Nikon dslr, no other camera manufacturer has made their older lenses more compatible with new cameras than Nikon. Their older AI-S lenses are some of the best ever made and quite inexpensive. Simply put, with a D3400 or most any nikon dslr, there is SO MUCH great glass available. Not the case with any other make.

  4. If your camera still has the original Aaton mount, I have a M42 to Aaton adapter for sale. PM me if you like.

so does this enable such lens as the Meteor 5-1 17-69mm zoom, to be used on say an Aaton XTR with aaton mount?

  5. do you mean recans or short ends??? I have bought my share of it. Most of the time it is good. Some fogging, but ask if a clip test was done or not. Yes with any product, the more you buy in bulk, the lower the price per unit. In the case of film, per foot. If you can take all the bulk film at once is another thing. If it could be dispersed to you in smaller portions as needed, even though you bought a larger amount.............

  6. Yes

    Yes

    and yes.

Given the age of the camera, it is a good idea to always make sure the 85 is out of the way. Tungsten outdoors?? Use a good glass 85 screwed onto the front of the lens or correct during post. You can see it move if you look closely into the lens while actuating the filter switch.

    sweet camera!

  7. I am considering purchasing a Gemini recorder. The only question I have is about the SSDs. Are new Convergent Design SSDs backward compatible with this recorder? Could I use a third party drive? I see that BHPhoto has the chassis for these drives available for sale separately. Also, I know that it records DPX, but can it record to any other codec?

I do realize that this is limited to HD res only, but it will be for a F3 and it is unused old stock for very cheap, so why not. My only concern is the media.

  8. It is no good and might explode if you use it!! Send it all to me with great haste!! LOL!!!!

But to be seriously , there isn't an expiry date on most if any motion picture film. It is intended to be shot relatively soon after purchase. I would do a clip test first to see what is what. Did you buy it originally? If you shoot without a clip test, rate it at least on stop over. I am serious though if you want to sell any or all of it, I will gladly take it off your hands.

  9. For a long time, Ive been on a quest to find some NLE software that's suitable for producing footage that I can submit to stock agencies. And it looks like my quest still isn't over. Mind you, I'm on a really tight budget so I'd prefer free downloadable software. Ive actually got two quite decent NLE programs that Ive paid money for (Sony Movie Studio and Adobe Premier Elements) and although they are quite versatile, neither of them are entirely suitable for stock footage.

These are the requirements that I want -

    Progressive video

Offers MOV as a file type option

Can select codecs such as h264 (bare minimum) and possibly other less compression heavy codecs like photojpeg (though not essential)

Allows the bitrate to be altered

Supports full HD and 4k video

Has basic colour grading options (contrast and colour saturation will suffice)

    Simple trimming

Ive tried to install Davinci Resolve after recommendations to use that software but my system can't handle it. I found out that it requires 8GB of RAM to run though I only have 4GBs of RAM on my pc.

So far, Shotcut meets just about all those requirements listed above but it's not all that reliable or stable. It freezes a lot and many times ends in failed exports.

Does anyone have any recommendations for software that has all those requirements?

4 gigs of ram is far to little for video editing. You should be using 16 gigs minimum for pro work. Anything less and you will be waiting and waiting

  10. Might get hit with a hundred "no" answers, but worth a shot.

If I could somehow figure out a hack or upgrade to get this to record in 422 to the internal card slot my life would be complete.

...Also these cameras are under $1000 now.

I love mine. Paid a grand for a barely used model with the slog 444 upgrade. External recorder is no biggie. I use older nikon glass and love it!
