  1. I have a couple pitches setup in the following weeks. I'm alot of experince with 16mm and have shots various reality shows with low end digital cameras(DVX, Canon XL2, etc...) I want to make sure I'm prepared in case any technical questions are asked. What mid level camera(digital,HD) should I check into? I have a little experince with Panasonic & Sony HD line, is this my answer? I will have dollies n steadicams. Thanks, Ryan
  2. It looks good. Couple things. As noted above, a little to long- 2.5 to 3 minutes should be long enough. To many shots of the young boys, trim it down, use the shot with the beer were they push the kid back off the bridge, use the slushy throw at the cops and a couple other shots. People want to see action even if it is dramatic. Also, don't think of this as a sequence of events, maybe open with a sand shot(which awesome) because it will grab your veiwer, then maybe cut to a shot of the band, etc... It doesn't need to make sense, the more varitey the better. Then maybe you don't see another shot of the sand till shot 10. Don't worry about telling a story so much as showing your best shots in an ADD sort of manor. Last thing- this may suck, but I 'm just being honest. Maybe find a song that is a litttle less drab. It's a good song but it doesn't drive the edit. Find a "rock", track that still grooves, but has a climax and sway of emotion. Other than that you have a nice reel for someone just out of school. Spread it around once you tweak it. "Tunnel vision is the worst, and we all have to fight it."
  3. Nice work, I think you could have thrown alot more shots in. The beat is semi-fast and it feels like the cut is slightly slow. Sometimes it would even go to black for a 1/2 second or so. I love the mood and feel of the shots. What effects or color correction did you do with shots such as the opening shot, or was the location just that gritty and cool looking.
  4. Nice work man. My only editing ideas would be to: 1. Make the opening sequence snap together a little quicker. It's cool you have the old boom box, just clean up the heads and tails a little. One or two of the shots seem acted because they will press a button then have there fingers in the frame for awhile. Also, I think it would kick in the song better to have some quick cuts of the boom box. 2. Did you shoot the whole song in the different locations. Such as the street with the cars on both sides, it would be cool to mix some of those shots in earlier, if you shot the whole song at each location. 3. The portrait shots are also very cool and add a great feel. It may be cool to add one or two in earlier. My overall suggestion: Copy your edit to a different timeline and try messing around. Maybe delete some of the dissolves or add more film spinning etc... If you have time it's a good technique. I do it on all the projects I edit if time/budget is available. Make sure you start on a fresh day so you can step back a little and look at your creation. Overall It was great work, good camera work, and defiantly had a rugged feel. I didn't turn it off like other samples I've seen.
  5. Here is a good link- it is all shot with a Canon 20D digital still camera, but it's what you are looking for. I've had a hard time getting clean looking nighttime elapses without going to digital stills. http://599productions.com/TimelapseLarge.html Keep trying differnet ratios- such as the 1frame/ minute
  6. Is there a effect for FCP that replicates the lights rays that happen at the beginning/end of each roll(usually casting a red or orange color). The only other way I can get film burns is from someone that has shot film and transfered to a digital medium. However I don't know enough people with real burns.
  7. I've been working on capturing nice time elapse shots with the Canon 20D digital still camera. I have run into one website that has a sample. http://599productions.com/TimelapseLarge.html I haven't been able to figure out all the little tweaks, anybody have ideas. Different shutter speeds? Different image sizes/resolution- right now I'm running Large resolution- not RAW. Also, do I need to photoshop each frame to make it fit screen. I edit with FCP and not sure if there's a quicker way to sort the frames down?
  8. I've seen alot of behind the scenes footage of music videos and noticed that they all seem to use a circular flourescent light setup. It is usually used with one or two people performing in front of the camera. Does anyone know what this light setup is called and where to get them. Here's a link that I see them using this light setup, in the picture it is used underwater, but mostly I've seen them used above water. http://www.hydroflex.com/ Go to pictures, then click on music videos, and click on aaliyah.
