  1. David Mullen's cinematography in all of the Polish Brother's films is truly beautiful collection of work. Northfork and the Astronaut Farmer are such great examples of scope framing and composition done the right way. "and I ain't tryin' to pole jockey or nothin" -Riley Freeman
  2. What's the non-legal part, the squibs, the burnt cars, maybe even real gunfire?!?! I wish I could shoot this. If I only had my own 35mm camera. This would be an experience.
  3. Niki, I've been reading your posts for a while now I really want to see what movie you are making with squibs and broken cars etc. You need to make this action epic, post the footage, and put your money where your mouth is. Didn't you also say the action film genre is dead? That was the only topic I agreed with.
  4. It was shot mostly on the DVX-100 although some of the later material was shot on the 100a. He emphasizes the importance of shooting 24p advanced for a proper transfer to film. It was uprezzed to high definition and color corrected on a Da Vinci system. The tape-to-film blowup was done at Alpha Cine. Here is an in depth podcast of the workflow. http://www.zoom-in.com/podcasts/2006/05/ir...ts_format_selec This has some info as well. http://www.dv.com/features/features_item.p...cleId=193501471
  5. I just heard about this yesterday, but I guess he will be speaking there today. I don't think I can make it, but I was wondering if anyone else was planning on going to listen to him. -Patrick
  6. I just watched the HD version of the trailer on apple's website. It looks really good. How was the orange glow to the sunset achieved in the first shot of the trailer? Was that through the D.I. or filters? I am excited to see it. It seems like the film will benefit from a similar sense of humor to that of Thank You For Smoking, which was both clever and honest. -Patrick
  7. I'm happy. So... How are all you Boston people doing? What's new with all of you CinematograFAAHS? GAFFAs? Directahs? Produsssahs?
  8. Anyone else on this forum from the Boston area? I think I've seen a few people, but I'm not really sure. It would be nice to have either a Boston or maybe even New England sub forum.
  9. Are you the D.P., or are you a director? If you are the D.P. think about this: How do you make things look strong photographically? That's another way of looking at it. What can you do to make your film/video look more professional? Lighting allows you to create moods, augment the look of your actors, or focus an audience's attention on certain aspects of the frame. Those are just a few examples. Have you ever compared the look of a photoflood to a normal incandescent bulb? You could white balance in video but there is a certain light characteristics that come from using a photoflood. There are characteristics of light that come from every type of film light you can use.
  10. So wait, I want to clarify something. The only way you can get a direct to disk telecine, is to get a scan on a spirit or datacine? Cant they just do the HD telecine and put it on to a hard drive rather than a tape? This is where I'm green. ;)
  11. I was just saying you shouldn't wait too long, mostly because I've done that with a few of my projects and it ages the film quite a bit. I would suggest having a lab/telecine house in mind before shooting. That's all.
  12. By the way have any of you done a direct to disk or hard drive transfer? Would a regular lab do that?
  13. Get your film processed soon man! Even if you wait on the transfer, your film has undergone its photochemical process in the camera and needs to be developed. I would not wait too long, especially with 500T, because it will affect the color response and increase grain.
  14. yeah, languid, listless, humanity... Don't forget naked!
  15. It was an douchebaggy joke. This business has more than a couple d-bags. Sorry, but it does and I love it.
  16. Well, as always with Anderson and Yeoman there are beautiful compositions. Plus you see Natalie Portman's ass.
  17. haha, wow, remind me not to write on these forums in that condition. It's strange that I wanted to extend my cinematography knowledge at that point in time. Anyone want to get together over here? Who lives in the Northeast?
  18. hahaha, I think I might have been drunk when i wrote that. Seriously though, it's a good school. Sort of. Not really better than AFI though.
  19. The last student film I shot was 15 minutes and we spent $2,000 on film and processing, but that was also because it was color neg. You're budget looks appropriate, but much like every other post before me, I will echo that you will need more film and a bigger budget for stock.
  20. Sounds like fun. Too bad I'm 3,000 miles away. P.S. I'm drunk right now.
  21. f@ck video. Learn about the film negative. Learn about photo printing, lighting, and lenses. THEN, move on to other cinematography related interests. (Film/video?) good luck.
  22. Absolutely spot meter, and put the darker side of him/her at zone VI rather than zone IV or V.
  23. Fitchburg State College. It's better than any of those schools. http://www.fsc.edu/commedia/
