  2. Being extremely passionate about film, and not so much at all with digital, i purchased a super 8mm Canon 1014xls to learn lighting and cinematography in general. I've owned a Canon XL1s and shot numerous skate videos, so i'm not a complete moron when it comes to composition and light levels. However, my Canon 1014xls is giving me trouble and i'm not sure if i feel like going through the trouble to repair it, or by a new one. Instead, i was thinking of getting a 16mm film camera and using that to learn instead. Anyone have an opinion whether Super 8 or 16mm would me a better format to learn on? I figure super 8 would be cheaper, so that was my original motivation. Also, i believe in taking cinematography step by step and not jumping into anything. Any response would be appreciated- Nicholas
  3. Just finishing my second year of a Cinema Studies major at the University of Central Florida, I find myself questioning the entire program. For one, there is absolutely no hands on classes, and no equipment to rent out. Also, i am paying nearly $17,000 a year because it is out of state tuition. With my ambition reaching no further than becoming a cinematographer making enough money to pay the bills, i feel no closer after these two years to reaching my goal. Are production companies/anyone else that is possibly paying me, looking for a film degree? any advice would be appreciated- nicholas (side note: i am also thinking of transferring to Columbia in Chicago if i can get accepted)
  4. So, my wonderful gun, my best friend, my right hand man... is terribly ill. I shot a few rolls no problem, but on location filming some important professional skaters, my 1014 let me down. With at least 30ft left on my roll of 64t, the END signal flashed in my camera and did not allow the motor to advance the film any further. Anyone ever heard of this? Also, since i have been shooting night and day locations off and on, i have been shooting partial cartridges, switching them out, and then replacing the cartridges to finish up the roll. However, when i take out the partially exposed cartridge, i hear a winding sound like the film in the cartridge either rewound or advanced quite a bit. This never happened with my Canon 518, so i'm not sure if this is normal. any help would be amazing. -Nicholas
  5. I have always used Frame Discreet for my digital transfers, and have never been dissapointed. Stills from my last transfer: http://framediscreet.blogspot.com/2008/04/...500t-super.html
  6. i get all my poop done at: www.alphacine.com for developing www.framediscreet.com for telecine
  7. Hey man, if you live in orlando and would like to help, that would be awesome. The show is downtown at a club 'backbooth' Band starts at 9, i'll be there most of the day. i might not be able to check the internet, so here is my cell: 248-974-4343 I am also in need of an audio recorder, so if you have anything... camera etc. i could really use it. Thanks- Nicholas p.s. you might want to clear out that inbox of yours so you can receive personal messages.
  8. I am shooting a band performance at a fairly small venue. I'll be shooting it with a Canon 1014xls and a Canon 518 as a B camera, and i'll also have a safety shot with a hd canon with a 35mm adapter. I just recently purchased a light meter, but won't be able to measure any of the light until tomorrow night. I was wondering if anyone was aware of the latitude of Vision 2 500T. Does anyone know how many stops underexposed i can shoot and still get a decent image? And as far as underexposing the shot and still getting an image goes, would the same go for Vision 2 200T? And one last question, this is my first time combining audio with super 8... and was wondering how long i can shoot at 24fps (non-crystal sync) and still be somewhat in sync. And any other tips would be highly appreciated! Thanks- Nicholas

I'll be shooting the stage performance as well as the crowd, etc. for B roll. So i won't be working with too much light, and i want to make sure i am not wasting film. Thanks- Nicholas
  10. I am in the process of renting a studio apartment, and wanted to make sure whatever place i decide to move into has the electrical capabilites for me to plug in lights and be able to shoot in the apartment. What should i look for/ask about as far as the electrical makeup of the apartment? Thanks- Nicholas
  11. Personally, i think this film would have worked much better if it were a silent film. The dialogue is on the nose, and it's too obvious. Put some faith in your audience and let them figure out the emotion of the girl. I think you did a well enough job of this without the voice over. -Nicholas
  12. To save some money on digital transfers, i have decided to start cutting and splicing reels together instead of transfering full 50ft rolls. Therefore, i need to create an entire super 8 edit station. However, i know nothing of cutting and splicing or of the equipment i will need to do so. Does anyone have any experience with creating a super 8 edit room, or know of where i can get the equipment to make one? Thanks- Nicholas
  13. I've come across a few internet stores selling super 8 gear, however i can't remember them for the life of me. Does anyone know of some legitimate stores selling super 8 equipment? Thanks- Nicholas
  14. I am currently attempting to understand light via a super 8 canon 1014xls. I know a professional light meter is a necesitty, however i am not sure which one i need. I've been looking at the Spectra IV, however i feel like i should also have a spot meter to understand different values within the frame. Also, i shoot 35mm photography and wanted to make sure my meter could read shutter speads as well as fps. Does anyone have any advice on a light meter that would serve my needs? Thanks- Nicholas (P.S. I was thinking of getting the Spectra IV, and then a seperate spot meter. money is an issue, so maybe a used one from ebay? eh?)
  15. Finally getting my hands on a Canon 1014xls, i find it time to invest in a light meter. I have been thinking about getting the Spectra IV, supposedly the 'industry standard' However, i would like to have a spot meter as well so i could really understand the light values i am shooting to get an idea of what the image will look like before i see it developed. I also shoot 35mm photography, and was wondering if anyone knew if the Spectra IV can read shutter speeds and not just fps. Anyone have any advice on the light meter i should be investing in? Thanks- Nicholas
  16. unfortunately, i am broke and really need some extra cash to finish a film. i plan to buy another one once i can afford one. -Nicholas

  18. Just making sure turning the internal filter on or off (canon 1014xls) will not affect B&W film, other than the ASA rating. Correct? Will there be any contrast change? Thanks- Nicholas
  19. Although i have only had the best experience in my mind possible using the Frame Discreet transfer house for my super 8 footage, and not that i ever plan to go through anyone else... i am a bit curious as to what else exists. Has anyone experienced a service for $30 a roll, and been really excited with the results? Thanks- Nicholas
  20. What exactly is your question if you do indeed have one?
  21. I had the film transfered to miniDV format to edit via adobe premiere. The film was transfered through Frame Discreet, and i could not have been happier. I highly recommend anyone to take advantage of such a great service. And no, i certainly could not afford the rights to the New Order song... but i hope they won't mind me borrowing it. If i could afford the rights to that song... i would have shot it in 16mm, at least 24fps!
  22. Gary- I have heard that the Canon 1014xls is one of the best super 8 cameras ever made. So although it will also be one of the most expensive, it would certainly be a good investment. The Canon 1014xls will do 18fps, but it will also do 24 and 36 fps and even one frame at a time. The camera i shot the film on could only shoot 18fps (the slow-motion 36fps speed on the camera did not function.) Jose- I used the in-camera meeter, but adjusted a lot on my own and also did not necessarily meeter the scene i shot, but rather something of a neutral color in the scene. I plan on getting a Spectra IV meter for my Canon 1014xls. Thanks to anyone who has watched! -Nicholas
  23. http://www.onthereeal.com/mesamis.html Shot on 5 rolls of Ektachrome and one roll each of 200t and 500t. 18fps. Canon 518. Since this is a movie mostly about rollerblading, i was planning to shoot outdoors in bright daylight. Therefore, i was planning to shoot the film entirely on ektachrome... save the indoor profile shots and any low-light skating that may take place. I was quite satisfied with all of the footage, however the vision stock blew me away. I don't think i will ever be shooting ektachrome anymore, and instead replace it with 200t and some ND filters. I also just purchased a canon 1014xls, so no more 18fps. Nothing more than a skate film really, but let me know your thoughts and criticisms. Thanks- Nicholas
  24. I'm actually looking for a Canon 1014 XLS. contact me via email if the camera is still available. onthereeal@hotmail.com
  25. The canon 518 properly reads the film speed of 64T. Just make sure to use the built in filter for shooting outdoors. Happy shooting.
