  1. I don't know I think facebook is pretty ground breaking. I mean, no other online social web site is as popular, and it's become a huge trend that it's uncommon to NOT find people on it. Aslong as they don't make the mistake myspace did, become too commercial and ruin all the sociology aspects.
  2. Nice stuff. I really want to do some timelapse stuff with my SLR but annoyingly the software I've looked at doesn't my support my dslr. I thought the HVX footage where they are sat infront of the window looked very filmic.
  3. Hey Serge, thanks for the feedback. The shadow on her chest was the biggest problem for me, unfortunatelly myself and the moving head op had to light this thing in a single evening, so I didn't get much time to play around with it. Diffusion gell would have helped but it's just one of those things I didn't think I had time for (but probably did...)
  4. Hi. At my college (Ravensbourne) we hold an event called Rave-On-Air once every year where we setup multiple television channels broadcasting over digital terrestrial and IPTV. The channels are run completelly by students, and various delegates from the BBC, Sky etc. come down to view the event (normally for recruitment pruposes). So if anyone is interested, the channels are going live tommorow (Friday) from 1pm (UK time). Here is the link for the IPTV as the digital terrestrial only stretches to about 50 miles: http://www.raveonair.net/ My role is gaffer for the Access show (in the tent, not the Access Music show) It's a huge project for us and I'm really excited about it so if anyone's interested in broadcast check it out. Cheers, Dan. (We are using the Telegenic HD OB truck if anyone here is really into broadcast, which is the most advanced OB truck in the UK. Can't say I've been inside an OB truck where the walls electronically "shift"...)
  5. Hi. I was the LD for a few musical numbers in the studio last week, check'em out and see what you think. Not my most impressive work but it's something. Watch it in high quality though, I thought the sound was pretty impressive. Cheers. Dan.
  6. Hi. Just wondered if you could spare a few minutes just giving your thoughts on these questions so I can include and reference them in my college report. -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. What is the future of television and cinema content? For instance films over the years in my own opinion have gotten more violent and have changed drastically in language and themes. 2. What affect have these changes had on society? Can we expect audiences to grow increasingly towards the influences of future cinema and television releases? -------------------------------------------------------------- Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  7. Tnx for the advice. In the end I had to export out as 4x3(16x9) and then under the 'Interpret' button in Encore change it to Pal Widescreen. It's a pain but it works. I really need to get hold of CS4...
  8. Hi. Sorry I know this isn't the best place for this, it should be in editing ideally, but I just need an answer really quick. I think I made a mistake in exporting a project as 1024x576 square pixel, Adobe Encore seems to read it and preview it absolutelly fine. However when it comes to building the DVD it comes up with an error that the resolution is not supported by DVD players. Obviously because it's keeping the resolution as 1024x576. Is there any way within Adobe Encore CS3 I can convert this? I've looked through the transcode settings and nothing I change alters it (wherether I choose 4x3, 16x9 or w/e) Or will I just need to re-export the video from Avid as 720x576(16x9 Anamorphic)? Annoyingly I clicked the 'Check Project' and nothing was flagged up about the resolutions, so it encoded the entire project, then, flashed the error, and no DVD image was made. Any advice appreciated. Thanks. Dan.
  9. Thanks for the responses. How directional are these lights? I don't know if anyone has seen that orange wednesday advert, where they're in that cafe speaking to a women about a film where she communicates with the dead (can't remember who it was or the advert very well) but they are using a really directional eye light which literally covers from one eye to another and that's it. It wasn't used very well as you can actually distinguish a shape (long oblong) of light going across the eyes, however it does literally pick out the eye areas leavnig the rest of the face. I was thinking of something seperate from the camera as it will be used with sony DSR and panasonic HDX setups on drama shoots, not so much documentary and I think the lens may block some of the light (perhaps, never used one so I don't know)
  10. Hi. I really wanted to get hold of an LED eye light, just for those situations where the eyes are a bit too dark and you don't want to go flooding any more light into the scene. Has anyone seen a place in the UK where it can be rented or prefferebly bought? I was looking intyo builing one out of a flexi stand and LED strip light although I would preffer something that is designed for it. Cheers. Dan.
  11. Hi. I recently edited some sound for a DVD I am making in Adobe Audition, I carefully set the levels and even put a -.1db limiter on the master fader which was set at 0db just incase. However, now that I've put the audio into Avid it seems to be distorting for some reason. Does Avid not read decimals in db's? ie. it's coming up to -.1db but Avid is reading it as 0db? Not sure why this is happening but as this DVD is being sold it kinda needs to be technically correct. Cheers. Dan.
  12. Tnx for the response. I'm getting an i7, mainly because it's not that much more than a quad. Plus it will be future proof.
  13. You pay a little more but a Western Digital is worth it.
  14. I think the problem may be when it is when it's stretched to 16x9, as when I exported an uncompressed version of my footage in 4x3(16x9) the blacks came out grey, however when I exported uncompressed 16x9 square pixel it came out fine. However the problem persists any way I do it with DV- PAL. I've had a look into altering settings but can't seem to find anything for DV - PAL. Tried changing the clip low level to 0 and it comes out the same as low clip level 16. The thing that stops me thinking it's the way quicktime is playing it is that I re-import it into Avid and it has been permanently lifted from the export. For now I'm just outputting everything as uncompressed. It's the only safe option. Hopefully getting a new pc soon anyway so, if it's a problem specific to this pc then hopefully it will go. Never knew the post process could be so tedious lol
  15. Sony EX1. Stunning pictures plus it's tape free.
  16. Hi. I exported some interlaced footage out as single field, as opposed to upper or lower first. What I wondered was, does this display both fields together at the same time, so effectively converting interlaced to progressive scan? I know you get the jagged lines where the fields don't match, but I prefer that to de-interlacing and losing half the resolution. tnx. Dan.
  17. Ok ignore the bit about the blacks coming out the same in after effects, as they seem ok now, but it's coming out insanely soft. I've made sure the aspect ratios etc. have been constant so there's no up-rezzing or stretching.
  18. The footage was standard DVCAM from a DSR and I've tried using stills images aswell. Both yeild the same results. I set the black low level to 0 instead of 16 and weirdly it makes no difference, even though 16 is the equivalent of 7.5 IRE. If I set it 32 as an online guide tells me it just gets worse. It's being exported out to a quicktime file, using the 'DV - PAL' codec. I've tried all kinds of combinations, RGB, 601/709 etc. What's weird though is that when I export using the Avid DV codec it comes out fine. For some reason I can't export out to an AVI via the standard DV codec through Avid. I personally think there's something wrong with my codec. As quicktimes playing every other codec fine, and when I reimported the footage and exported as uncompressed the standard DV codec had permanently washed out the footage. Whereas I can do this with the Avid DV codec or purely uncompressed and it comes out fine. Another reason I think it's the codec is that the same thing occurs when exporting from After effects.
  19. Hi. I encountered a problem when exporting a video some time ago. For some reason, the standard DV codec on my computer in Avid seems to lift all the blacks when exporting. I ran several tests, when exporting uncompressed the blacks were fine, when exporting with Avid DV codec, the blacks were fine. I thought maybe it was the way quicktime player was playing back the standard DV footage, so I exported some video using the standard DV codec, re-imported it and then exported back out uncompressed and the DV coded had permanently lifted the blacks into a nasty grey. Has anyone else had this problem before? I also tried exporting and importing using both RGB and 601/709 colours levels and neither made any difference. Aswell as exporting in 16x9 square pixel and anamorphic DV. tnx. Dan.
  20. Sorry to butt in here, but I just wondered what use Orangewood Sticks would be? And when you say, paper tape, is that the same thing as masking tape? I'm not questioning why you would need I've just never seen of heard any use of orangewood sticks.
  21. Hi. I always wondered, what inside a CCD or CMOS sensor, defines the dynamic range? Some CCD's have greater dynamic range than others, I heard somewhere that it was due to the size of the individual light sensors. Tnx. Dan.
  22. KK thanks for the repsonses. Won't be joining anytime soon anyway, need to actually start bringing in enough work to make it worth it, and that's after I've fininshed my degrees.
  23. I'm not ready to join any union as I'm still in education however, a tutor told me he was a member of BECTU. Just wondered if there was anything better, in the UK?
