  1. Hey I just finished my new cinematography reel It would be great to get some feed back. I also updated my website,so let me know what you think of the lay out www.dancarruthers.ca Visit My Website Thanks a lot:)
  2. I agree with the other people but you do have some really nice shots:)you clearly know your cinematography. just work on the editing and pace, thats been my biggest problem,I suck at editing:(
  3. Hey I think this is the right forum for this messege? Okay so I got a music video in a couple weeks,it kind of came out of the blue actually!? but its in Penticton B.C and does anyone know of any lighting rentals in Penticton, if you can give me there email or website that would be awesome Dan
  4. hey vincent when you rated the 7219 at 400 iso did you print down as well,or just leave it slightly overexposed.
  5. Yeah Im thinking I should leave the lights clean for the greyscale, then I gel the lights orange after? that makes sense. if I lit the greyscale orange the timer would time it out then the rest of the image would probly be blue right?? And Im really hoping to do some tests with the oillamps and find the right colour temperture for my lights.
  6. Thanks andrew thats what I'll probly do then also I want the film to be very warm, because its supposed to be lit by oil lamps so when I shoot the greyscale do I leave the lights clean? than I gel the lights orange after? Or do I shoot the greyscale under the colour of light that I want? I just dont want the the tranferer to time out the orange
  7. hey hey just reposting my questions:) a few more questions if I rate it at 320 asa do I instruct the the lab to print it down 1 stop or do I tell the person doing the transfer to print it down? and by printing down will that increase contrast?
  8. hey thanks for all your help Im starting to think I'll go for the 500t 7219 we are going to be using prime lenses, we have a variety of cookes and ageniux. and there fast around 2.2 or somthing? I shot with them before on 250 fuji daylight, and they looked great. But I just remebered the director likes wide shots and long camera moves, which means Im gonna have to really lite the sets,so a 500 t stock might be my only option if Im limited on lights. We arnt going for a theatrical realease or anything, just telivision, maybe some festivals?? so a little grain wont be too bad, and with prime lens then It should look decent. a few more questions if I rate it at 320 asa do I instruct the the lab to print it down 1 stop or do I tell the person doing the transfer to print it down? and by printing down will that increase contrast?
  9. Hey I got a music video coming up and the director mentioned he wants a sharp image. we are shooting on 16mm not super 16 and its all at night time, in a forrest for some, than in a circus tent lite by oil lamps. So 7219 would be great for the speed being 500T but I was leaning towards a 200 T stock cause it will be sharper But Ive heard the new 7219 is supposed to be pretty grainless. Ive never tested the stock, and I dont think I will beable to do any tests unfortunatly so my question is how sharp is this stock in 16mm.is ther much of a difference from 7219 to the 200t. one problem I might have with a slower stock is I dont have access to large lighting units, my biggest will be a couple 1ks. maybe a 2k??? And I want alot of contrast very black shadows, so what suggestions do you guys have to achieving highcontrast very dark shadows? I know to light high contrast, but any techniqies like pushing or overexposing than printing down?? I dont have much experience with those techniques so any ideas?? thanks
  10. My top 5 right now is Dante spinotti emanual lubezki harris savides robert richardson roger deakins
  11. I find that hard to believe,he already has lots of awards. and if your gonna leave the asc than why do interviews for there magazine, just a few months back diving bell and the butterfly had a small artical
  12. yes Im gonna change the direction of the light, Im just worried if I time in the red in post it will make all the lights red, so should I gel the lights that I want to be white, blue?
  13. Hey I know this questions seems to come up lots. but Im shooting a darkroom scene useing 7218. Now I read in a past post that useing a magenta gel would work than timing in the red in post. but Im also gonna have some white lights turn on after the actor is done developing. so the lights that I want to be white should I gel them half blue or full blue, to conteract the red that will be added in to make the magenta lights red??? Or should I just shoot the whole scene under white lights and add the red later?
  14. Thanks for your help, I'll defently stick to a slower stock. but how come blue works better on film?
  15. Hey Im shooting a dance video on 16mm. and theres a scene where a dancer removes her top and we see right through her like her chest is invisible. the video is a few months away, so I havent had time to talk in great detail with the director or our special effects supervisor. so I want to know what are your guys opinions on using 16mm and greenscreen? and what stock works best? thanks
  16. I think thats the correct term? Okay so I have a music video coming up in a few months, we are shooting 16mm and theres a scene where a man is walking through a forrest at night with an oil lamp. I want to look into a dummy lantern, where a small bulb or flame faces the camera and a stronger buld faces the actor away from camera. And I guess my question is, is that somthing you can buy? I mean it seems to me it would be somthing the art department would make from scratch with the lighting department involved. I dont know what our budget is yet? But if I where to look into getting one made where would I go? do you guys know of any good prop stores that specialize in dummy lanterns, or any information at all on how to make one? thanks.
  17. thanks for clearing that up. I'll keep it in the freezer, its really old, and is a medium speed, 320t. And might be a few months before I use it.
  18. Hey I just got a bunch of old 16mm film for free, and I keep hearing mixed opions on storing it, I put it in the deep freez, which is really cold, should I just keep it in the fridge or a regular freezer.
  19. Elswitt also won the asc award, so I dont think he won just because paul thomas anderson was not gonna win. But that being said I was really dissapointed that roger deakins didnt win, Assasination or no country where my first 2 picks. I really think his 2 nominations cancelled each other out, like he may have had 50 votes for each film but elswitt had 51 for twbb.
  20. nice work, kind of upsetting though. The day for night looked pretty good, Although I dont think seeing sailboats out in the ocean at night is beleavable One complait I found the pov perspective of the mom at the beginnig reminded me too much of a lose tripod going back and forth. But I may be wrong. good work though good sound as well
  21. Hey a couple days ago I posted my demo reel and it was not very well recieved. 1 It was too long, and 2 washed out.and 3 not enough variety. Hopefully I did a better job on the first 2 but it is still lacking in variety. it consists of only 4 projects I shot last year. I shot it all on the DVX100a, which to me is the biggest letdown, I need more and better formats, Im gonna be shootong some 20 year old 16mm filmstock in a couple of weeks, maybe I can post that stuff soon, if it turns out? Anyways let me know what you guys think of the contrast, does it still look flat and washed out. hows the new music, does it seem like a demo reel. And do you think the shots are decent for a demo reel, in terms of lighting, composition and camera movement. appreciate your comments and any ideas you have so I can make a better reel. thanks Daniel Carruthers Visit My Website
  22. Read it thanks, also I have magic bullit for color correction, whats NLE mean?
  23. I see your point, I think when I tend to light dark, every thing is really one tone than underexpsed. I think I need to try to have more contrst by overexposing slightly and leaving the shadows to fall off underexposed. Also about the blacks would I just adjust the contrast, Im a little embarresed to admitt that I really dont know much or care much about post colour correction. which probly doesnt come as a big surprise. So if I add more contrst will that make the blacks richer? is that what you mean? thanks dan
  24. any more comments, before I get the hack saw to my reel?
