  1. Do not buy a camera unless you can cover the cost, because, if you make the mistake of renting that thing out...well, you can only guess what'll happen. People are pigs, my friend, when they work with a set-up they don't own. Then, on top of that lax attitude, if they screw it up, you don't have the power of an established rental house backing you up when its time to collect. Save yourself a lot of trouble.

I've been loading since I was 13, but that mag kicked my ass a few times before I got the hand of it. Other than that, great camera. I've used it twice, and certainly wouldn't mind having one again.
  3. Eddie, Please send me a PM when you get that info.
  4. You might want to contact the Rockerfeller, Ford, and Guggenheim foundations.
  5. Video is fastly becoming an art (which is to say, something accesable to nearly all people, but to question the demise of film as if it were even possible is nothing short of mental masturbation. :D
  6. John never sleeps. Kind of like the dead girl in The Ring, only with an extensive knowledge of all things film related.
  7. Kubrick used a basic kit often used by students to light A Clockwork Orange. Alcott knew how to use it. I was shooting black and white 35mm some time ago, and I used a kit composed of probably 40% halogens. It looked fine. Of course, they don't have any kind of practical color spectrum, but in B&W, who cares? Well, most of the time. Just don't put a frosted curtain in front of it, lest it melt. So, you could probably construct a kit on the cheap. Go to the local Community College, and sign up for a class in whatever. Get an I.D, then drop the class. Now you must do this once a semester, and you can get discounts on all kinds of things.
  8. You'll be kicking yourself right quick should you invest that kind of money in a kit revolving around an XL2. As far as the adapter, its a nice idea, but it may be wishful thinking. Find some videos that you like, buy the DP dinner and pick his brain.
  9. If you must create an in-camera effect, might I suggest something in the vein of time-lapse photography? That would create the "streak" effect you might want. I have seen some effects done with the "squishy" lens, but it might be a bit much. I spoke with David Lynch about Lost Highway when he came to the Pinewood Studios to show the film, and he said that he wanted to make the film look just filthy, and purposefully shot the driving scenes in dark, but tried to overexpose it in a way that would create a kind of "halo of dirty light," as he put it. Either way, you'll want a combo of accesories. If you're not happy with dailies, then just shoot it straight, and fix it in post. Good thing about S16 is that testing can be done on the cheap. Have you considered shooting the scenes in video? That might lend a cold look to the scenes, and it would be quite simple to create effects in post, even with the most basic software. Let us know how it works out.
  10. God...what butts. I cannot articulate the rage I feel that some pig would even imagine doing something like that on a news page. I've demanded they remove it at once. Join me and E-mail them.
  11. My father used to shoot Marxist Chinese propaganga, and I was shocked to see Farenheit 9/11 packed with the most basic techniques of Eisenstein and Griffith. Being a Marxist for 25 years, I developed quite an appreciation for Soviet cinema. Tarkovsky is probably the best of the non-propaganda auters. Eisenstein was the best Marxist propagandist, while, all the way over in the U.S, D.W Griffith did a hell of a job for the anti-black, anti-semitic Klansmen propaganda with Birth of a Nation. Propaganda probably alienates people, so i'll knock that off, but, short of going to Yale University, I have yet to see a good Propaganda course taught. I mention the science of propaganda because it is practically inseperable from Soviet film. I have to say that Зеркало is perhaps superior to Солярис, simply on the level of editing and cinematography. I am going to buy a 35mm print of Solaris as soon as I can find one
  12. Due to a recent revival of discussions concerning the EYEMO 35mm camera, I felt it appropriate to open a forum to discuss the methods of silencing the EYEMO, which, although it is a great steal for 35mm, makes a hell of a lot of noise.
  13. What might work is to build a custom muzzle. Perhaps one could construct some type of soundproof casing that snugly fits over it. I have heard of people putting things such as clothing or fabric around it, but that is just not practical, and a good mic is going to pick the sound up anyway, so why give yourself a headache. I really would like to hear more on the process of silencing (or atleast reducing the noise), so it would be great to hear a more technical deconstruction of this issue.
  14. The last time I was in the United States, I went to a yard sale for someone who died, and I bought 2 Eyemo 35mm cameras for $600. I asked the young man how much he wanted for them, and, that being the quoted price, I gave him what was in my pocket as a deposit, and returned 15 minutes later with the rest of it. I love these camers, but they do tend to make a good deal of noise. I have shot two or three films with them, and, as Nykvist_Fan said, they are extremely good for B-Roll. The funny thing is that my daughter said: "I hate yard sales, dad. They look so trashy." I liked the look on her face when I showed her what they retail for on E-Bay. Yes, I am a man of the proletariat. :P
  15. John Travolta crashed one of Polanski's films by walking off the set. If it can happen to Polanski, anything goes.
  16. Such a tragedy. We sent each other several E-mails, and he was extremely articulate and very nice. I think its no understatement to say that BWP redefined our notion of what the horror film is, and what it is capable of. I count him as a friend lost, and I am sure that many on this very board feel the same way, even if we never had got around to having a beer with him. He and his family will certainly be in our prayers. If you view the first link that Wendell posted, there is a very tasteless, cartoonish image of a plane crashing on that page. I find that to be very stupid and insulting, and I know that Neal's family would not appreciate the putzes who run that site announcing the death of a loved one with such a disregard for something as basic as good taste. What else is there to say?
