2nd AC responsiblilties?
David Calson replied to David Calson's topic in Camera Assistant / DIT & Gear
thank you both! -
I'm sure the Camera Assistant manual would help answer this for me (don't have $40 to spare at the moment) But I'm looking to be a 2nd AC and was wondering what the responsiblities would entail beside slating. I hear there's a lot of paperwork, besides camera reports, what other paperwork is there?

Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull etc.
David Calson replied to John Holland's topic in On Screen / Reviews & Observations
Lucas always used the excuse, that whenever people criticized the new starwars movies that it was expected since 'supposedly' everyone bad-mouthed the old trilogy (complete bs). I wonder if he'll try that same excuse with this movie. -
Saw an interview last night on nightline. Said he didn't do it for long, right your own punchlines.

Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull etc.
David Calson replied to John Holland's topic in On Screen / Reviews & Observations
I think one time Spielberg said 'Temple' was his least favorite indy (which I agree). Maybe in hindsight he'll acknowledge what a failure this one was and shoot a proper one. That old paramount logo at the beginning gave me hope he was going to stay old school with 'Crystal' oh well. -
How important is to AC before DPn'
David Calson replied to David Calson's topic in Camera Assistant / DIT & Gear
vastly enlightening, all of you, thank you! -
I PA in Atlanta, I like cinematography, shooting my own stuff. Are my chances at DPn' without ACn' good from what you know about the production world (which is more than me)? Oh, and the thought of me pulling focus, no way man, no way.

Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull etc.

Indiana Jones is highlighted in next months AC, should be interesting to hear the justification for what went on. -
Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull etc.

I like how one critic sums it up, "It should have been called, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Exposition." This movie brings back memories of 'The Lost World' Some nostalgia but overall an ehhh what were you thinking mentality. All the cgi and different cinematography really ticked me off. -
Just starting out...

I'd be interested in the '10 shot' list if you don't mind. -
thanks guys, hmmm Panchro, I'll have to get some of that.

How often do you do it? What's your approach? What's the best brand of cleaner?

I'd like to continue this thread as I'm having a similar setup. What other combos make for good moonlight? I've seen 183 'moonlight blue' and it looks pretty good, but just wondering if there's something else that looks even more real.

There's some pretty good stuff here, http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/pdf...primer_0306.pdf 'DV Rebel's Guide' is good too. 'Digital Moviemaking' Scott Billups Reading the camera manuals are great resource too.

two questions on f/stops
David Calson replied to David Calson's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
what would I do without this forum, thank your sirs! -
Hi, When someone says they are lighting at say a 2.8-4 split, what does that mean? On professional, expensive features do you USUALLY decide what stop you want to work at and then bring in the adaquite amount of lights or do you just use whatever lights are available and set your stop to that? Thanks guys!

I'd like to know the purpose of a chart. I'm guessing the shades of gray from white to black ensure you have the right exposure, nothing blown out or crushed. There are 3 black bars, why? Why all the colors and different shades? I'm guessing the chart itself is gray for color correction references. The striped looking cones are for backfocus? How are charts and color bars related? What would happen if you didn't have a chart? *If my attachment didn't go through, go here to see what I'm talking about, http://www.dsclabs.com/charts_in_action.htm Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

David Calson replied to David Calson's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
Very enlightening sir, and you spared me the complicated math, thanks! -
I'm lens illiterate, spoiled by zooms, so I'm trying to get better suited with primes. What's got me caught up is field of view. For example, I know 35mm is wider than 75mm, but I don't know how much of the scene that lens actually captures. I'm afraid of putting a lens on only to find I'm right on the actresses nose or that my wide lens is too wide. How do you the lens you put on covers exactly the amount you want to see? Thank you.

Question on Shutter Angle
David Calson replied to David Calson's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
I see, so to increase shutter speed, either increase frame rate, or shorten the shutter angle. I guess one thing that threw me off was how digital cameras allow you to control shutter speed by itself. -
Question on Shutter Angle
David Calson replied to David Calson's topic in Students, New Filmmakers, Film Schools and Programs
I'm a little confused about the formula. So, fps x 360/shutter angle = shutter speed. It's the '='s part that has me caught up. Do you mean equals as in, if your frames are 'x' and your angle is 'y' then the shutter speed will on it's own be formed based on those two variables. Or is the equation a suggestion of what you SHOULD adjust shutter speed so that it achieves proper exposure, if that makes any sense. Like is there a shutter speed knob on a film camera that you can adjust, or do you change shutter speed soley by adjusting shutter angle and/or frame rate. Thank you for clearing up what shutter angle is! -
So I read in a book that if you go from 180 to 90, you need to open up 1 stop. From a very new filmmaker perspective, this doesn't sound right. If your shutter angle is smaller, shouldn't that mean more light is hitting the film? Also, can you tell me about f/stop loss at pertains to shutter speed, is there a formula? (ex. 1/50 -> 1/100= 1 stop loss?)
