Hey Nick, I did use the 10-25-75mm - I was just having the worst luck with the 75mm cause there some macro shots that I just wanted to single out such as only the eyes but I had to be I believe 5 feet away from the subject and it just didn't work out so I settled for macro shots of the face. The lenses that I used were the original lenses for the camera and I do believe they were Yvar-Bolex lenses. It was fun to experiment with the 16mm but I don't think I will shoot on it again - I'll most likely step up a little to the 35mm world :) and learn and learn as much as I can from people like you and others in the business. The more I speak with all you folks on here the more I realize that it's you (the Cinematographers/D.O.Ps) that pretty much hold the film together and it's such a great piece of mind :) - I study Film Theory for the past 4 years and all the hands on stuff I do on the side and you folks are such a great help! Here are a few extra snaps of the production Also I just got my film stock processed and I started today the edit in FCP and I think I'm doing a good job in terms of color correction - I wanted my character to be very pale/cold and so on and her husband very warm colors. So here are the original & color corrected. Ohh I also made it 16:9 from it's original pull down, 2:3:3:2 - What you you guys think, it looks nice or should of kept it to it's original 4:3? Hey Chris, I thought it was maybe St-Ecynt or something like that I remember I went there to meet with an artist in august and it was all like farming and stuff... but totally loved the framing you did for the corn field - well done!!! Hello folks, I was reading this post: http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/in...=19306&st=0 and I would like to educate myself more on the aspect ratio just so I can follow along with some of the folks on here and for my own knowledge. Is there any good sites you recommend that deal with this topic? Also if there are any images associated with the aspect ratio it would help me more ;) my best, Joey Dee

I'm curious to see your short - I've studied last summer Bollywood Cinema and i have alot of respect for it's construction and symbolization in Hindi culture! Hey Adam, Thanks for the tips, really appreciate it mate! I have allready shot all my footage now the film is being processed to a digital format for me to edit in post next week. I have Twixtor: http://www.revisionfx.com/rstwixtor.htm and I have tried on many digital footage that I shot (obviously on a digital format) and it looked great to be honest - I generally don't use too much slow mo but I should of thought of testing before shooting :( So do you think since I shot on 24fps on my 16mm and I'll try to slow it down by 20-30% in post it would kill the quality? I personally don't think so, but of course I haven't done it yet hahah so your experiences with it is more valid then mine as I need to find out next week but I guess that question can be objective as it depends on what each person is trying to achieve no? my best, Joey Dee

Fellas, I don't see how that matters - as the filmakaer is trying to see India through their eyes and this documentary is nothing close to a "performative documentary" live A&E where the image needs to be glamourized with dramatic tone & music to sychronize with the narrative, that form of construction is irrelevant to the social surroundings of this doc. I really liked it very much - I liked to see the rawness of different cultures it's more appealing to me than glamourized images of the world as it keeps me in touch with reality - however there is a major seperation between the "Bourgeoisie" and the street people. For example the image presents us 2 types of people - the Indians in the streets & the foreigners living comfortably yet criticizing the culture, technology and so on which makes me think ok what is the point of all of this that is presented to us? What is the point of going to a different country and film people in the streets while the people being interviewed are foreigners? One of the person being interviewed says "Im just trying to look to the India through their eyes and not from the point of view from the United States..." but thats' false mate cause in order to justify that point the documentary needs to allow the subjects to express their concerns and needs... Not offer to represent a whole nation from a foreigners point of view, now I could understand that it would be hard to find a person who speaks english or the same language but there are alternative such as hire a translator in order to have to communicate in order to properly see India through their eyes :) moreover we now that India is a poor country (please forgive me for this poor generalization - but in comparison to the U.S & Canada) - why not target the root of these social issues and so forth. Overall I liked it - as I like raw representations of cultures and in terms of techniques you're good - you're not doing a performative documentary such as "A&E" where they need to re-construct the events through factial events and so forth, you're style is aligned more with Neo-Realism, the use of real people in real life events, therefore lighting and all that jazz is irreleavant to the message & theme you are setting in your doc. I checked your website and it says your in Montreal (I'm in Ottawa and I'm constantly in Montreal every second week or so) and I was trying to figure our the locations of some of your shots such as the Corn Field and the Beach scene of the couple kissing. Hey Jon, I just check out the stills on your myspace - and they look very nice!!! Well done mate!!! here are the stills for the ones who are still curious. I should of used that technique for my short film - uhmm here's a question Jon, do you normaly apply that method to natural light or it doesn't matter? Cause I think it's more dramatic to manipulate natural as opposed to a lighting kit (in my opinion that is). my best, Joey Dee

Hey folks, Here's a quick question and let me know if I screw up. When you shoot slow motion on the Bolex 16mm is it better to have it run @ 60fps or 32fps and slow it down in post? Cause what I did was I left it @ 24fps and I will slow it down in post - Im not trying to achieve a SUPER crazy SLOW MO SHOT but I still want a nice "normal" slow mo shot, so Let me know if I'm good or It was better to shoot higher. But I think im fine however I'd still appreciate your opinions. My best, Joey Dee

Hello all :) Okie - so on Sunday (Dec 17th) was my shoot for my short film titled "The End" which was shot on Bolex 16mm. Before the shooting I joined this community hoping to gain new friends & learn from you all and I must say everyone on here has something to offer and I really appreciate the help and comments you have posted in order to help me with certain tasks!!! :) A little info on my short film - I wanted to bascially create a short film on a specific emotion that I have not really seen or experienced in my life and that is the "de-emotionalization" meaning seperating emotion from the process of death! We are all humain and when a loved one or a friend passes away it's only natural for us to become emotional and mourn the dead...and so on! So, I wanted to position a character where she does not go through this emotional process and I wanted to see what is the cause for such cold hearted behavor, so I created a short film that deals with these issues in addition I criticize religion on how it does or does not fit in a person's life under these circumstances. The twist here is she takes her own life to the end of the road (meaning she commits suicide), hence the title "The End" so she is not insaulting anyone else who is dead except herself and this was my way of experimenting with this theme. It was very challenging to shoot this short for me because it's such an interesting theme (for me atleast) that is very detailed as everything presented on screen symbolizes something and requires a conpetant reader to decypher the allegorical messages in the image and with such a compressed TRT of 2minutes I was going crazy hahah!!! Here are some snapshots of the shoot (some of the shots you will see is from one of the crew member's camcorder who was filming the making of the short - I will also post more images tomorrow when my DP puts the images of the film shoot on a cd for me) - the shoot took around 8-9 hours but it was actually alot of fun and at the same time very stressfull - but hey that's the beauty of filmmaking ;) Snapshots from Camcorder willing filming - also this was my way of critcizing religion, my character walks towards the fireplace (FIRE = HELL) with a roserie wrapper around her fingers. This was my way of creating a connection between Heaven & Hell (God & Satan) - (GOOD & BAD) (Death & Life), the way I set up that shot was with a 75mm focus on the Cross while dollying to the fireplace which was out of focus (or soft focus) in the background... it was a very hard shot as her hand kept moving out the frame and the fireplace so I was holding her hand!!! I did alot of close up shots as I like to get intimate with my characters and I like to invate their privacy to create that clausterphobic mood to help my actors play the proper role of the character. Yah that would make sense - also I noticed part of the frame there was light that came in which burnt a little of the frames and I know with the 16mm you need to tape the sides of the camera so no light would come in, what lenses do you think he used? 25mm? my best, Joey Dee

Thanks Keneu, I saw most of these Bolex 16mm on YouTube and to be quiet honest I don't fancy their style except for one of them that just blew me away, extremely beautiful: this dude just caught the right emotions of these people in his film @ the right time, very powerful!!! my best, Joey Dee

Thanks alot fellas for your help! Just a question has anyone shot with these lenses before? I just wish the place where I rented the camera equipement had different lenses but Im not sure if Nikon lenses would of fit this camera. Thanks again, Joey Dee
