  1. screw the filters and let the lab correct!
  2. LMAO!    Remember the ending of Godard's Every Man For Himself, when the score kicks in and the camera slowly starts panning left revealing a full orchestra in an alley way!
  3. Will all these candles be in the shot? Savides likes to bunch up movie candles and bounce them off a show card, the result is a soft and extremely warm look. If you don't use any sort of fill, or set lights, and just let the candles light the scene you'll probably end up with a very dirty, grainy video image which won't be very pleasing. What you want to do can work on 35 mm, and maybe S16, but video...I don't think so.
  4. If you see yourself doing anything other then painting with light, you have no business to even talk about cinematography. To truly want to become a DP it has to be the ONLY thing that makes you happy. It's all about an intense, burning passion, and a willingness to sacrifice.
  5. LMAO! No doubt Macs are great; but I'm not an editor. I need something to update a reel and download porn!
  6. This is an intersting thread, as my friend and I are both looking to buy a new PC to cut demo reels. What's the word on Avid Express vs. Vegas...Which is better? I don't want to go mac for many reasons, or principals, really. I don't need a super uber high end machine that's gonna cook for me, do my laundry and give me a happy ending; all I need is something stable enough that I can update a 2 or 3 minute reel. Also, does anyone know anything about the company-Emachines? They seem to be offering great deals for nice packages.
  7. The Sin City trailer looks mighty good. :D
  8. I forgot about Man on Fire, that should definitely get recognition.
  9. I never knew they can fit on C-Stands! That does sound rather awkward and tedious. Junior stands are what they are made for.
  10. I'd love to get my hands on a Blanket Lite, one of these days.
  11. These seem like appropriate nominations, to me. Although I would have definitely liked to see Collateral being nominated, as well as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
  12. You should probably speak with a professional special fx person. If this is exterior no fog machine will work; you'll need one of those heavy duty puppies that the special fx guys use. Have a look through this site; this guy is my pal and he does awesome work. If you want to blow s**t up, smoke s**t up, etc he's your man. http://djfx.com/effects_smoke.html
  13. Does anyone here use it? I think it's a wondeerful tool if you have the space. A friend of mine likes to use it real close for CUs after wrapping it in muslin. He said he got it from reading about Amelie. Anyone else a Wall-O-Lite fan?
  14. I loved some of the images, they were very poetic...the piece as a whole, doesn't work, though. Can we have the technical details?
  15. That's a beautiful pic...thanks, David. *adds Alien Resurrection to Netflix*
  16. I really wonder what a Zanit set looks like! :D  5K skypan eyelights and 12Ks halfway down the block!!! :P
  17. Imho, working for a rental house is a complete waste of time...it has nothing to do with cinematography or creative filmmaking. I'm intensely passionate and driven to become a superior filmmaker, and would rather be on a set learning from DPs, and directors anyday then packing hampers and hoping someone will notice my charming smile. If you want to shoot, then shoot, period...or at least be around people who are shooting, and observe/absorb. I rather make s**t money but continual progress then being some drone making money but no artistic progress. That's just my opinion, but then again I'm a person who is driven by passion rather then rational judgement.
  18. LMAO  Thx, demesisx. So the ringlight is a kind of obie/eye light, but one that doesn't produce any shadows...am I correct?
  19. Btw, do you know any films, or photographers, that utilize this unit so I that may see it in action?
  20. Could have used this, this weekend! Thanks, Kris.
  21. Can someone please tell me what it is, and what is its purpose? Thanks, guys :)
  22. My purpose as a DP is to always serve the material as best as I can, but doing so using my creative and aesthetic judgement. I think that any type of lighting can work for any type of film IF the DP knows how to sculpt the lighting to fit with the material. I see no reason why crime films are always shot in noir lighting and comedies are always flat. I don't think there should be any standard way of lighting anything. I'm not interested in lighting as a genre, I'm interested in developing my own unique visual interpretation of the material. It just so happens that I visualize things in a softly lit style, and I'm usually always able to serve the material with my lighting/framing. Of course I would never turn down a script if it specifically called for hard shadows, but I would be happier if it called for wrap around noon bounce  It's true that Savides has echos of G.Willis in some of his work. I should have been specific and mentioned Birth, and Elephant to be the work of Savides that I'm interested in. As for what a bib shadaw is: it's the shadow you get underneath the chin/neck area, that comes from a top light and looks like a bib.
