You can either reflect it off a foam core or put a silk in front of it. These are just two ways... there are many others. You might want to also try a large bank soft light. Those are usually less direct than fresnels or open faced lights.
Whenever I ask people if it is better to work as a gaffer or ac to become a DP, they always say that working as a gaffer is better becuase you can learn the technical stuff (camera) quickly. However, most big ASCs are usually credited as having started out as AC or Cam Op with little experience as gaffer... Can anyone explain this?
