  1. Hi David, do you have any projects in the near future that you would write about? I enjoy your reports so much, it's almost like the subscription to your favorite magazine ended :) Hope to read something soon, but only if there is enough time of course! Me and I think everyone here enjoys and learns so much from your offerings.
  2. There's this car explosion in Syriana, (sorry for the tasteless music etc.) my question is, how did they do it since you can see the people entering the car and it exploding without a cut? did they just blow up some extras? :P it also looks extremely real, so I don't know if it was CG? Hope someone could enlighten me, regards, Xax
  3. Thanks Saul, that would've been really more suitable to put it that way. Is there a chance to change the topic title? I couldn't find the edit button... Sorry to be a bit catchy on the title.
  4. Hi we are two young DP's from Austria, Vienna, who own a RED ONE with all the necessary accessoires, but only a zoom suitable for 2K and no Follow Focus, Mattebox, Tripod etc., but we want to shoot 4K and use cinema standard accessoires like FF4 and MB18. The problem is also that this is our first feature in the UK, so we don't have any connections to rental companies yet which could enable us great deals. As we are shooting a feature in London from mid February to mid March,(18th to 18th to be exact) with a very low budget, we are looking for people who would want to rent our RED ONE until shooting begins and would trade us accessoires and lenses for it. We are looking for a special deal from someone who might have lenses, follow focus, mattebox and tripod but no RED ONE, but would need one. So what we propose is: Have our RED ONE for a few weeks, let us use your lenses, follow focus, mattebox, filters, tripod. Hope to make this work with someone who is in need so we can wash each others hands Regards from Vienna, Austria PS: this is crossposted on REDUSER.net to reach a wider audience, hope that's ok.
  5. hi, we found a few companies in delhi making and selling them, we'll check them out today! thanks
  6. hi sanjay it might be possible that you already have been contacted by our line producer, dinesh we are probably getting an arco dolly from mumbai as it seems at the moment i also got your contact from markus huersch, lovely greetings from him!! we also might be interested in building a car rig ourselves, we are just looking for those forged double couplers, do you know where me might find such stuff? here are a few pictures for reference: http://www.alps-scaffolding.com/Scaffolding%20Fittings.htm as we are on a very low budget, we can't afford to rent a car rig or hire riggers all the time. thanks for the information so far, regards
  7. Hi we are currently preparing a short film to be shot in northern india and are looking for a chapman/fisher/panther dolly or something similar with a movable up-and-down base. we have been only looking in delhi so far and could only find manual dollys. thanks for any hints in the right direction. regards from moussoorie, xax
  8. just use a doppelkurbler :P use panther weights and everything will be fine
  9. hey, looks really really good! and the acting is very believable and the story seems cool as well hope you get picked up and we can see the full series on tv! :)
  10. Yes, definately. we also shot footage at 12 fps and 32 fps and it's on it as well.
  11. thanks paul for your ideas i will have to call the lab again probably and ask if it's on the negative, although it shouldn't be as we saw dailies and the flashing wasnt there i just can't believe that they are using a broken machine and then also giving it to us like this the stupid thing is that neither we nor the directors are in hong kong anymore so that's quite unfortunate..
  12. hi stephen i also checked that because we brought film on the plane (but didnt let it pass through the xray machines), but it's also on the fresh rolls we bought there. so im not sure what it could be, what kind of camera malfunction could this be? i really dont think it was the lab because it's a veryy well reputated lab where johnny to gets his films developed sacnned and colored for example so i am going to have a look at the tape probably and see if its on there as well, but i almost dont think so...
  13. hi stephen yeah that was quite stupid, i thought it was enough, here's a proper clip: http://dedicated13.nessus.at/testmore.mov hope that anyone knows what this is about and how we could resolve it... could it be that the transfer was made in 24 psf but should be 23.98 PsF ?? to answer your question, we used a moviecam compact with zeiss highspeed lenses on fuji eterna 250d for this scene...
  14. hi, last month we shot a short film on 35mm and had it HD telecine'd to HDCAM SR tapes at the shaw brothers studios now i see a strange flicker in the footage, is that normal or should we go complain? http://dedicated13.nessus.at/test.mov thanks for any experience on that
  15. layout etc! but thanks, i mainly use leica, sometimes medium format, a 35mm f1.2 lens or 80mm f4.0 in the medium format ones, various films, lots of agfa 400...
  16. i started a new blog where everything is framed in 1:2.35 at http://www.stilfabrik.cn let me know what you think!
  17. stills are fun! especially developing and scanning, it's really calming me down :) http://flickr.com/photos/xax/ and for the gearheads

  19. sorry for the terminology, i thought it was clear that way by tungsten interiors i am referring to an interior location lit with tungsten practicals and tungsten lamps by daylight material i am referring to daylight film stock, fuji 500D to be precise so the idea is to use daylight stock on tungsten lit interiors, but lit the faces with daylight lamps with half cto, so the background gets reddish orange and the faces stay fairly neutral
  20. hi, i've seen the following two frames on a reel for a post house (local hero post), and would like to achieve a similar effect. here are the two screens, before and after color correction the thing is, before processing, the super16-2k scan looks quite a bit orange already, so i am guessing half-cto on the lights and shot on tungsten film? or shot on daylight film and half-ctb on the tungsten lights? what would make more sense and would there be a difference? or is it all the color correction afterwards? i really like the tone of her skin in the corrected shot, so if i want to achieve such a tone on someones face, how can i prepare it in lighting and film-stock choice so the lab can just emphasize it a bit more to achieve it? what about super white flame or chocolate? or half straw? i played around a little in photoshop and to achieve the look from the second picture i just needed to pull contrast to over 100%, and it looks quite like the final frame we are planning to shoot tungsten interiors with daylight material and light the faces with daylight lamps with half cto on them, and let the backgrounds be very orangish tungsten, could that be a way of achieving the look i am after which is featured in those two frames? or would half cts be better? thanks for any input on that matter! regards, xax
  21. actually i found a lab and a telecine facility already processing is 0.1 us cent a foot! at the lab that christopher doyle used to be at, mandarin labs that is hd telecine is about 500 usd an hour so that's quite cheap, and it the 2perf saving in hong kong would have been just peanuts... we are testing on tuesday in hk, so i'll let you guys know how it went!
  22. i will definately send away my film in the future... just checked on the prices of a fresh can of film in hk 90 euro, which is about 140 usd for a 400' roll of fuji 500d that's just ridiculous, it's 250 euros here??
  23. Hi! we are looking for a 1st AC and Key Grip in Hong Kong for a 35mm short from the 15th to the 17th of August. Camera used will be an Arri BL4s and Cooke S4s Dolly will be Super Peewee IV Special stuff includes underwater work and perhaps a car rig. Because it's a self-financed student production, rate is either just compensation of travel and costs, or low daily rate, depends on experience. looking forward to applications, please send an e-mail to office at stilfabrik dot at
