  7. I know this question has been asked before, I'm sorry, I can't seem to find it. What equipment do you guys use to re-spool your film? Is there a special machine for doing that or do you have access to a lab? I've been wanting to make some 200' spools as well. Thanks!

My "special machine" is a 400ft. magazine for Arri 16. I fill it with 400ft on core and an empty 200ft daylight spool in a changing bag. Outside the bag I connect the motor to the 12 V battery of my ACL to do the spooling in full daylight without the need of a darkroom. The counter is not so precise, so you better check it before and tape a small mark to the exact 200ft. position.

Very simple, works fine, even "on the road".

    All the best, Volker.

  10. I have a Century Precision Optics - Double Aspheron for Zeiss that covers S16 on a Zeiss Super Speed Distagon 9.5.

Zeiss Aspheron with Super Speed Distagon 9,5 and 12mm will both cover S-16,

while with the Vario-Sonnar 10-100mm there ist some vignetting.

Don't know about the converted 12-120 in 12mm macro setting, probably it should be fine.

    It's worth testing.

    Goog luck,

    Volker

  11. Shouldn't we shooters all have dark bags by now anyway? ;)

There is a simple trick that works everywhere. First prepare some empty 100 feet plastic cans. Make a center hole of around 10mm into the bottom part, then cut corresponding slots into the sides of both, bottom part and cover. Take it in the dark bag, fill your fresh film into this can (cover down, bottom up), pull around 2 feet out through the slot and close the can. Take it out of the bag. Now you can feed the camera with the film safe in the can. There is time enough to control the loop without fogging the film. Once the camera is loaded and the film fixed to the empty spool, remove the cover (which is the bottom now), place the full spool to its seat, still fully protected by the bottom of the can, which is upmost now. You can control the seat through the center hole in the bottom, the film is still protected. When everything is fine remove the protecting underpart of the can and close the camera. I have a couple of such cans and fill them timely befor shootig, so I can reload the camera wherever necessary.

That's all. Apologies for my english, I hope I could make it clear.

    Volker.

  12. Hi Andres,

IMHO the best Bolex for S-16 conversion is a 3 lens turret RX4 or 5, if you can use all three lenses, preferable the Switar set 10, 26 and 50 or 75mm. I own some of them. The conversion was done by a german mechanic, who meanwhile has retired. His specialty was to center the optical system to the wider frame by shifting the film canal, not at all touching the turret. The recentering is done exactly, so you can use the 10mm Switar without any vignetting. No warries with the film transport, image steadiness etc. He has done hundreds of cameras for several TV stations. If you need the 16-100mm Zoom Switar, the bayonet mount might be a good choice, but the Switar prime set on a turret might be even better for easy hand held shooting and best image quality. As mentioned before, I have some of them and perhaps could give one away. If you are interested, let me know. Its cheaper than the JK conversion.

    Cheers, Volker.
