  1. What are the most commonly used motion picture film cameras these days?
  2. What is the overall best P-touch labeler? The labeler that does what assistants need it for-not a bunch of useless features.
  3. Check out the Matthews 25lb sandbags, they're only $18! I have 4 of these and they hold up great! http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/MW2309/ The design is better compared to the impact ones because the hand strap is positioned such that when you lift the bag it pulls the sides of the bags off the stand whereas the impact ones tend to wrap around the stand when trying to remove it. I have seen a stand almost go down when a grip tried to pick up an impact bag off a light stand and wasn't paying attention. Only downside is you have to sew them shut. As far as bad sandbags go DO NOT get Calumet Photo brand sandbags. I bought a 25lb zippered one and it started leaking. Matthews has yet to fail me.
  4. Check out filmtools' 3/8" rigging hardware http://www.filmtools.com/filmtools-teenie-weenie-three-eighths-grip-format.html
  5. Mayfers have a few benefits over cardellinis in my opinon: They can clamp to flat surfaces with use of the wedge insert Most of them have built in 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 female threadings Lighter More compact Swappable pins - I stick a piece a short 15mm rod into a mayfer when I don't want to mount my z-american arm on the camera. This lets me clamp my monitor to the tripod while still have a quick release mounting system. Cardellinis are definitely stronger and provide a better bite in most situations except flat surfaces. They have different uses.
  6. I'm a young aspiring Director of Photography based in Chicago. I have been freelancing for a couple years now and I'm considering finally moving to Los Angeles. I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice as to how I can best prepare for the move? I'm not sure yet when is the best time to move. I have done work as an electric and Gaffer on short & feature independent films and AC work on digital & some 3d experience. I have very little film experience as an AC. I have lit for 16mm as a Gaffer and know how to pull focus without looking at a monitor on the red but I haven't had much hands on experience with 35mm cameras because only big union shows around here seem to shoot 35 anymore. I am perfecting my resume, website, reel, business card and reading as many books as I can. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, incase it makes a difference, I own a full cinema style Canon 7D camera package with prime lenses, marshall monitor, etc. which I intend to take with me.
  7. Redrock Micro has a great mattebox for the $$
  8. What are some techniques besides going blind squinting at the monitor all day? A lot of the witness marks seem to change from stop to stop or aren't exact.
  9. I'm relatively young and in Chicago. Therefore it's been difficult to get into the camera department on a project shooting 35mm film. I've read about the cameras and inventory procedures and such. But as with most things on set...reading a book will only get you so far until you actually see how it's done in the field. Is there anywhere in Chicago I can learn the operation of film cameras so I could work as a loader or AC should I be offered such a job? I understand the theory, relatively well read but haven't gotten my hands on the gear. I mostly work as a 2nd AC with the red and other digital cinema or video cameras.
  10. Any specific models to look at? I'd like to spend less than $350. I need it mostly for checking hmis during load in and such. I want to start doing more best boy electric work soon and this seems to be a necessary tool especially when checking out hmis prior to production. (when loading the production van/testing all lights).
  11. Any suggedtions? Cheaper the better. Are there any features that are handy to have besides that it measures in kelvin?
  12. Okay well what's the best way to tell someone ELSE to wrap it. haha
  13. I have the Bogen/Manfrotto 536 carbon fiber legs; one of the reason I bought these legs is because they can go very low to the ground as well as very high. In order to go low the leg spread is fairly large compared to most tripods. Each leg is about 27.5" from the center of the tripod (on the ground) when full spread. The longest spreader I've found is 24" using the Manfrotto 165 on ground spreader. I'd like to spend less than $200. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  14. What are the maximum working loads of sash cord #6, 8, 10 and 12? Does it vary by manufacturer? Any sources or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  15. I have a canon 7d and a set of Nikon/Nikkor manual primes lenses: 24mm f2 35mm f2 50mm f1.8 85mm f1.8 135mm f2.8 With the 85mm I get about 2.5 revolutions on my redrock v2 follow focus so I thought, maybe I can actually use the witness marks on this SLR lens if I found the film plane on the 7D? I measured from a point near the hot shoe of the camera as an approximate starting location of the film plane to an object 4 feet away-I was pretty close to the actual film plane, I didn't spend time to find the exact mark. But then I measure from the same point to an object eight feet away and set my lens to 8 feet but the picture is completely out of focus?! I have to set the focus on the witness marks to a much shorter (maybe 6ft?) distance to get an object 8 feet away in focus. Effectively I found the film plane would be in front of the lens according to this camera's witness marks? What's going on here?! Any idea why the film plane would shift? I realize the witness marks on SLR lenses aren't exactly perfect but something seems to be wrong here...the film plane is shifting forward a foot or so?
