  1. Does putting two 1/2 CTB's (half blues) together equal the same color temperature as a full CTB?? Some people have told me that this is true, others have told me that it only lowers the light. Im sure that it lowers the light and although two 1/2 CTB's might not equal a full CTB exactly, I imagine that it would be quite close (in terms of color temperature). Would this be the same for CTO???? Thanks
  2. Ask nicely once, ask nicely twice, and ask nicely a third time and then just threaten to the kick the poop out of him, and continue to do so until he pays. Violence is written in our genes so why try and fight the anger?
  3. I thought that was fantastic. I loved the way you used light and shade and the contrasts you had between them. That is one thing that I believe makes an image interesting and enjoyable to watch. Keep it up
  4. If I just connect my computer to a normal television and then do my color correction would this be ok in terms of gamma? Do a projector and a normal television have the same gamma? If I am releasing a copy of my short film to both the internet and television, does that mean I need to do 2 different color grades because of the change in gamma? Sorry guys I am new to this but thanks for all your help!
  5. The first thing that comes to mind in order to create SEPARATION from the subject to the background (with no backlight and without increasing the distance between subject and background)... 1. Small DOF 2. Light the subject brighter than the background 3. Light the sjubject and background with different color temperatures I personally don't mind backlight but like everything with cinematography it depends on the project. I like to keep an open mind and not prejudice myself to particular lighting set-ups (although I have my favorites).
  6. Correct. CTB moves the color temperature from 3200K towards 5000K CTO moves the color temperature from 5000K towards 3200K I even spelt color the 'right way' for all you americans. Do you love me?
  7. Couldn't agree with you more. However, the same still applies today and it is only us 'cinematographers' that notice the lighting set-ups. It is considered natural to the audience no matter how fake and un-realistic the lighting set up may be (in most cases).
  8. It certainly does go back to the silent days however once sound was introduced camera movement wasn't as evident. It slowly crept back into mainstream soon after
  9. THANK-YOU ALL FOR YOR COMMENTS!!! It was a once in a lifetime experience to watch this magnificent movie in the cinema and I hope you all get the chance too! As for the camera work comment about it not being early for its time, I strongly disagree. You can't tell me that a medium-paced zoom in to enhance the emotional effect of what the character is saying was normal for the time. I thought that around this time they we just starting to move the camera around again (those huge blimps and covers they had so they could record sound restricted the movement of the camera). Regardless the cinematography was ahead of its time. Some tell it was suicide to have a section of someone's face in total darkness like that. A style which Toland took to the absolute extreme in Citizen Kane. I would love to see an ORIGINAL projection of Citizen Kane. I say original because I am told that in this version and before all the digital enhancements, that when you saw a shadow on screen the face was meant to be black and you see NOTHING!!! On the DVD release version you can now see some detail and its a shame because of effect that the digital enhancements had on the print.
  10. What is the different between shooting at F5.6 or shooting at F4.0 and using a ND2 Filter, apart from the depth of field changing???? Does the more glass you have in front of a lens affect teh quality, or increase the chance of a lens flare???? I have had some confusion trying to work this one out for myself so I thought why not ask in the forums!!! Thanks
  11. Went to see a screening of this film film last sunday, amazing. I love that contrasts in light and shade in his lighting. The camera moves for this movie were way ahead for its time also. Elaborate.......
  12. there is a alot of work that would need to be done and would end up costing alot of money. it will cost more money mucking around then i would be saving with film stock and processing etc. i am also told that there will be a problem with telecine as well
  13. yer i thought about it after i posted and realized how difficult it would be much harder. you would have to do something to the motor so it doesn't spin around 24 times in a second. also the mirror in the camera would have to spin twice as fast. new gate aswell trouble trouble trouble but it would be awesome
  14. Is it possible to shoot 2 perf using a konvas 1m? I do not know particularly that much about 2 perf conversion but i was wondering if perhaps someone could design some kind of metal plate that would cover the gate so you could do this. Then you would just lower the frame rate to 12fps??? perhaps there is another way to do it? let me know
  15. Plain and simple... what is good cinematography??? share your thoughts below
  16. TO ALL, I was wondering How to achieve a spinning camera effect. To explain myself better I want the camera to stay in the same position but then spin all the way around, so that the image goes upside down and then back to the normal upright position again. This type of shot can be seen in apocalypse now when martin sheen is being thrown to the mud towards the end. ANY IDEAS ON HOW I CAN ACHIEVE THIS? (the cheap way) p.s. I am also interested how they achieve this the hollywood way, whoops I meant expensive way :P
  17. I am guessing you leave the lights clean. What ever you want to be white you light the greyscale with.... am i right or wrong Andrew??? If you lit the greyscale with the orange gel and would orange then come out as white after color correcting??
