  1. A bit of a hypothetical here, but if I were to do a digital theatrical release on a project; how do KDMs work? Could I upload a single file to my server, give the link to all the theaters to download the file and have them each unlock it with an individual key for that specific theater? Or does everything have to be wrapped in an individual DCP?
  2. I'm working on a low budget drama, and looking for the best camera to use. My original thought was to use a GH2 with the hack for a majority of the work and filling in with a 5D (when we need wide shots, but can't pull the (GH2) camera back any further). But I've also been thinking about D800. We're hoping to shoot 90% on a sound stage, so lighting is pretty much 100% controlled. Planning on using Compact Primes. Thoughts? My ideal camera would have been the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, but we're shooting in July and it's not shipping until the end of July or August.
  3. Still available starting price $110. Buy it now $150. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270593987097
  4. I couldn't figure out where to post this, since it relates to both SD and HD. I need some help on deciding between these two cameras. I need IR shooting capabilities, which both of these cameras have. Pros to the Sony A1U: HD 24p Larger 1/3" sensor Cons to the Sony A1U: sensor scans interlaced images slightly more expensive CMOS sensor One sensor Pros to the Panasonic DVC30: Progressive scan sensors 3 Sensors CCD Slightly cheaper Cons to the Panasonic DVC30: SD No 24p Smaller 1/4" Sensors We're going to be using the cameras almost entirely handheld, in IR modes. The cmos sensor could cause problems with rolling shutter. The interlaced scanning sensor might be a problem too. However, we'd really like 24p and hi-def.

  11. No their not, because they don't make cameras that shoot in infrared, which is essential. The last camera that Panasonic made with IR capabilities was the DVC30.
  12. Scientific Research = 501c http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501©#501.28c.29.283.29 You have to full under certain requirements to fill a non-profit and tax exempt. There are numerous Ghost Hunting groups that are registered under this.
  13. Your right, we're not... Not Yet anyway. We can't afford the $500 to register with the damn IRS.

  16. I've heard that Film resolves no more than 4k and is usually around 2k. Film Negatives MAY get up to 6k, but most don't. Most Film Release Prints are 2k (1080P HD) or 1k (in between 720P HD and PAL SD). So HD can resolve better than a Film Release Print but probably not a 35mm negative. If you DI HD (Which is really the only logical way to go.), you'll get a release print equal to a Film that has gone entirely through a film workflow. Each Copy of the Film degrades the quality up to half per pass. Negative (4k/6k) ---> Interpositive (2k/3k) ---> InterNegative (1k/1.5k) ---> Release Prints (.5k/.75k).
  17. Any reason why nobody mentioned the Panasonic HPX170 or Panasonic HMC150? HPX170 = DVCPro HD which produces far better images than HDV. HMC150 = AVCHD which is said to match or surpass HDV in quality. Both are under $5000 new.
  18. From what I know, there is no 1080p option, ever, on the RED One, because of the processing required inside the camera. 1080P will be available on the newer Epics and Scarlets.
  19. Really? Never heard that one... thought the only way that could be is if the International Cinematographers Guild was involved. And if I'm not mistaken almost all unions, except SAG and the WGA, allow non-union members to work on union shows, and union members to work on non-union shows.
  20. Yes in 720P you can do slow-motion and fast motion (12, 15, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 40, 44, 48, 54, 60). Files sizes depend on frame rate and format. DVCPro HD is upto 100mbps (depending on frame rate) and has a 4:2:2 color space but is only 8-bit and is an older codec. AVCIntra 100 is also upto 100mbps (depending on frame rate), 4:2:2 color space and is 10-bit. AVCIntra 50 is upto 50mbps (depending on frame rate), is 10-bit, but has a 4:2:0 colorspace (much like XDCam). So the AVCIntra 50 format is similar to shooting XDCam (EX3) but with the HPX300 you get the option of shooting a higher format (AVC Intra 100). The 4:2:0 color space can be limiting for shooting chroma key stuff... so you also have the option to bump up to AVCIntra 100, if you need to shoot green screen for a AVCIntra 50 project. AVCIntra 50 is said to be similar in quality to the DVCPro HD format, because of it being 10-bit codec, but is half the file size. The draw back on AVCIntra 50 compared to DVCPro HD is the 4:2:0 color space of AVCIntra 50. The 100mbps formats will get upto about 1 Gigabyte per minute in size and the 50mbps formats will get upto about 500 Megabytes per minute in size. Nowadays though, you can get a 1 TB external harddrive (which would be 1000 minutes with the 100mbps codecs.) for about $125. Basically the HPX300 gives you SD to HD formats, so you have plenty of choices for a given situation.
  21. Films shot on a DVX have been blown up to film prints before... pretty much any Prosumer that shoots 24p can handle a film blow-up pretty well. An option if you do SD is Instant HD Advanced. http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/c...instant-hd-adv/
  22. Panasonic HPX300: 3 CMOS 1920 x 1080 native AVC-Intra 50 and 100, DVCPro HD (Far clear codecs then XDCam in my opinion.) It can also do SD in DVCPro 50, DVCPro and DV. About $8500 including lens (at B&H) http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/s...Model=AG-HPX300
  23. Well I found this article, http://forums.syfy.com/index.php?showtopic=2316691... but I believe they're shooting in HD now, so I'm curious what they switched over to.
