  1. Hi, Basically Yes. However you can get adapter for older Arri mounted lenses. A Nikon adapter is available but you cannot focus at infinity, so just macro! Stephen Williams Lighting Cameraman www.stephenw.com
  2. Hi, The DVX is a good camera. The HDV Z1 looks cool in HDV! you should compare the cameras yourself. I used the Z1 as I had to shoot for am American Client NTSC. I thought the pictures were better than a PD150 if that helps. Stephen
  3. Hi, The Sony HDV Z1 can record both PAL & NTSC in DVCAM! Stephen Williams DP Zurich www.stephenw.com
  4. Hi, I have used the Nikon D70 without problems for stop motion. Make sure you set the camera to manuel! I have also used a Nikon F2 and had the film printed to CD. Registration was fine if the camera was moveing, but is still a little work in photoshop is required. Stephen Williams DP Zurich www.stephenw.com
  5. Hi, BBC top gear tried to destroy a Toyata and could't. Stephen www.stephenw.com
  6. Daniel, I don't think its by choice David has only worked for 10 weeks. He has just had one film! One less job and he would have had NO WORK! Remember there are many DP's chasing every pop video, commercial and film. Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  7. I had a crew for 3 days with average weather. I spent another 7 days with just the director and an Arri 3 driving all over the country and waiting for the right weather conditions! Stephen
  8. What were the printer lights? or are you looking at a dark video transfer? Stephen Williams Cameraman www.stephenw.com
  9. David, They got a wonderful deal! Do you know what is the Union rate for a Film? Stephen www.stephenw.com
  10. Jonathan, I remember it well, that was the first commercial shoot I did as a DP. I had only shot Motion Control in a studio till then! Film was Fuji F64D, Camera Arri III, Cannon High Speed primes. Coffee backlit Shot 35mm Lens T4, 4.00 in the afternoon Sun backlit and 2 mirrors and negative fill. Potato Girl 24mm lens T4, 11.00 in the morning, natural sunlight . Clouds shot another day and composited. Telecine Spirit @ The Mill London to Digi Beta. Cheers Stephen Williams DP www.stephenw.com
  11. Hi, I have just done comparison tests shoothig Kodak 5212 viewing on a Spirit in HD. The Cooke 20-60 and the Cooke 20-100 are colour wise identical, and very similar optically. The 20-60 wide open is very slightly softer in the middle of frame than 20-100 at T3.1 wide open. Optimium sharpness is a third of the way out from the middle of the frame on both lenses. The Cooke 50mm Series II is very slightly softer overall than the above. The Cooke 25mm Series III is softer still and does not match the 50mm for colour. The Angenieux 20-120 is not anything like as good, much much softer and fringing. The smallest apeture I used on all of the tests was T4. Stephen Williams DP Zurich www.stephenw.com
  12. Arri were doing a half price offer for superspeeds with a new 235! I think they sold out!
  13. Hi, Perhaps Dominic Case can comment? My understanding is that the film may get stressed or more dirty if no core is in place when loaded into the processing machine. I was taught to remove the core which I did for 20 years, until I read a thread on CML. Stephen Williams DoP Zurich www.stephenw.com
  14. If you can't do it easily, ask your lab do it. (I am sure they would in any case)
  15. Thats sounds like a good reason to shoot film!
  16. They could of easily shot 35mm for that budget.
  17. Hi, Let me know if you see a PL mounted set super speeds at 10K Cheers
  18. Hi, Some were sold on E-Bay at $5-6000 per lens, you can download the Arri pricelist from www.arri.com. to see the new prices. $3000 would buy you a single Zeiss Standard or Hi-Speed if your lucky! Stephen
  19. I was thinking that all the pictures I have ever seen from 1/3 inch chip cameras were disappointing. I liked the film 28 days later but thought the pictures were '1/3 inch chip looking'. With a budget of 15,000,000 USD I was not impressed.
  20. Where DV looked good and Panavision looked bad. Examples of both please.
  21. Ask your lab to break them down! Stephen
  22. Hi, I have just found a Movicam manuel from 1984. The camera on its own will run to 32 FPS. If the camera was really meant to be used without a thought at 50 FPS I am sure it would have been a standard feature from the camera alone. (My Ultracam also runs to 32 FPS.) The manuel however states that with the control box speeds from 1-50 FPS forwards & 1-32 FPS reverse are possible. I think that the high speed option with the control box may have been disabled, remember the camera is not new. Stephen
  23. Hi, By putting extra stress on the camera, the bearings will wear much much faster and the camera will make more noise. One reason why almost all of the Mitchell BNCR's ever made still run, is that people did not try run them fast. The high speed mitchells had hardened bearings which make more noise. A Moviecam should not be red lined like a Ferrari! It will work, but higher repair costs will catch up with the owner in the end! Film cameras if looked after can last well over 50 years! Today I was using a Mitchell on a motion control that was made in 1944! It still runs at 120 FPS which is safe, the original motors went to 144FPS. Some people I know managed 160FPS for a while and then BANG! camera ruined! Stephen
