  1. Hello everyone, I'm currently in the process of developing initial ideas for a dissertation I'll be writing later this year, and was wondering if anyone wanted to share some advice and potential topics to research into? It has to be Cinematography-based as that's what I'm studying. Thanks, Jonny
  2. For anyone interested, I've put up a Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro onto eBay. Great condition - used only a handful of times. UK-based. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331582421261
  3. Ending in one hour! Still a good deal to be had!
  4. Hello, Selling a copy of DaVinci Resolve if anyone is interested - auction ends tomorrow (19:39BST), and there's no reserve price, so it could be a pretty good deal: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331223187269?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 As I understand, this version can be upgraded to version 11 when it is released. Cheers!
  5. Yeah I realise that would be a cheaper option, but I have access to these Dedos for free. Regarding their output though in comparison to a conventional fresnel: With a 150W lamp in the flood position, its light output is greater than a 300W Fresnel studio fixture. In the spot position, it equals or exceeds a 1000W Fresnel studio fixture. Thanks for the replies!
  6. I've got a shoot coming up where I preferably want a few 150W Dedos put through to a flicker box, and I was wondering if this is a good idea considering they come with dimmers? For another scene I'd like them put through to a DMX board, so I can control their output more easily than if I had the separate dimmers for each one. Would either of the above scenarios screw up the dimmers that the lights come with? I know the dimmer and plug actually come as a separate lead that plugs into the head, so can I use a different cable instead, with no dimmer? Thanks!
  7. Item ends in just over an hour for anyone interested!
  8. Hello, Posted a similar advert last week - there’s one last copy of DaVinci Resolve for sale if anyone is interested - auction ends tomorrow (20:45GMT), and no reserve price, so it could be a pretty good deal: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331138358547 Cheers!
  9. Hello, My work are offloading some unused software, and there’s currently a copy of DaVinci Resolve for sale if anyone is interested - auction ends tomorrow (19:50GMT), and no reserve price, so it could be a pretty good deal: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DaVinci-Resolve-ver-9-10-CD-and-Dongle-/331131085498?ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:GB:1123 Cheers!
  10. Sorry I realised I do have a follow-up question regarding using a higher wattage bulb - if you're using ND or dimming them to bring them within your exposure range anyway, then what's the benefit of using a higher wattage (apart from creating a warmer light if dimmed)?
  11. Thanks Toby for clarifying. I must've misinterpretated the information, although I did think that literally hiding a lamp behind the practical was maybe a bit unneccessary! Cheers guys!
  12. Hi there, I'm currently looking into a lighting strategy that primarily involves the use of practicals. After some research I've heard about hiding a "gag" light behind a practical in order to augment its effect. Can anyone elaborate on how this is done with regards to what kind of rig I would need to create? Thanks! Jonny
  13. Hello there, I'm currently in pre-production for a short film, which is primarily based in an underground bunker (set build). I'm after some visual references for the lighting (films, TV, photos, paintings), whether it be in a similar location and/or that show strong use of practicals. I've begun looking at the film Downfall, but would like to hear of any other ideas? Thanks! Jonny
  14. That's a very generous compliment. Thank you! There were 4 different set builds for the film - an apartment, a bedroom, a classroom, and a corridor. From pre-production to the release the film took roughly a year to make. I can't imagine I'll ever work on a short like it again in terms of scale, so it was a very rewarding experience for me, and naturally I learnt a lot of lessons! We've already submitted it to a few festivals, primarily student ones where we hope it's visual style and production design will make it stand out.
  15. Hello there, A trailer for my first short film as DoP has been put up online, and I was wondering if anyone would like to watch it and give me some feedback? I realise it's only a trailer and so doesn't really represent the film as a whole, but I'd still appreciate any comments! I'm a 22-year-old student filmmaker, so I've still got a lot to learn! The trailer can be found at: http://vimeo.com/30010948 Kind regards, Jonathan
  16. Hello, I recently finished a test shoot for an upcoming scene in a short film I'm involved in. I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the lighting in this shot (ungraded), as I can't decide what I don't like about it (aside from the fact that it's not in focus!) This is a set build (corridor in an apartment block). I was going for a sunrise feel through the window, (three blondes - Full CTO and Straw) and then had two hanging practicals (75W Photofloods). Blondes were by no means my ideal choice for daylight, but alas this is a student film!
  17. Hi all, I’m coming up to a second set build in early March for a short film, and would greatly appreciate your feedback on my lighting strategy for it! My plan is to have 2 or 3 2K fresnels, bounced off silk coming through the window at the end of the corridor (left end). Along with this I’ll be placing 75W Photocrescenta bulbs in the two sockets, hanging over the set, and then from here I’ll accentuate these practicals with some redheads or fresnels coming over the sides of the set. I may also bounce some light through the smaller windows, which are positioned just above the apartment doors. That’s my basic set-up anyway! The one question I do have is, because the light coming through the window is supposed to be sunrise/early morning, do I need to gel the tungsten at all? Or can I just leave them as they are if I’m white balancing to them? I’ve been told that a hint of pink can look nice, so I may try that. I know a lot of it is personal preference but if anyone has any experience with this then it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, just some general feedback would be good. I’m a student filmmaker, so a lot of this is brand new to me really! I've been looking at films such as Old Boy and Seven for this film. Thanks in advance, Jonathan Flint
  18. Hello, I’m a student filmmaker, currently studying a degree in Film Production. We get to specialize in a particular area this semester, and I’ve chosen cinematography. The bulk of the assessment is to shoot two scenes out of a possible six, each containing various styles and qualities of light. I’ve been allocated the following two: (A)One: Morning Sun Through a Window – Interior/Exterior The room is partly lit by morning sunlight shining through the window. A character is pouring a glass of water on a table set back in the shadow, They then take the glass and walk over into the sunlight of the window. They look out & see another character outside walking away. (A) Two: Moonlight Through a Window A character enters a moonlit kitchen at night, opens the fridge door, takes out and drinks some milk. A light is switched on in an adjoining room/hall/etc and they quickly close the fridge door. I’m currently in the process of gathering some research material, and was wondering if anyone could recommend some films/certain scenes/paintings/artists/cinematographers that I should look at for inspiration? Thanks in advance, Jonathan Flint
  19. Hi all, I’m a 21-year-old student filmmaker and I’ve landed the job as DOP on a fellow student’s third year graduation film entitled “Rooftops & Gumdrops”. He’s a set designer, and as such there are three set builds, plus various location work, happening from January of next year until May. I’ve done lots of film work before but this is my first with the title of DOP, so I’m pretty nervous, and would appreciate feedback as I approach each build! The first set build is in early January, and you can find designs here: Classroom designs. The scene itself is a very small one, taking place in a classroom with two lines of dialogue. The main character is sitting in the corner staring out through the window, during a CPR class, which takes place in the middle of the set. My plan is to light entirely with artificial daylight, with two 1.25 HMIs through the windows and then having a bit of fill where needed with either Fresnels, Redheads and/or a Kino Flo Diva-Lite that I’ll obviously all gel accordingly. Does this sound like a viable approach? We’re shooting on 7Ds by the way! Thanks in advance, Jonathan Flint
