  1. Apparently when I have my camera set to Auto it closes the aperture down all the way to f/32. Will have to do some tests to see if the aperture is stuck at f/32 or if putting it in manual will work. If this doesn't sound right or you think the problem might be something else please let me know! Thanks for your replies btw!
  2. Okay, so lets say that I'm shooting Vision3 500T in my XL401 (which the camera would probably think was 160T or something). I have a 220° shutter and shoot at 18fps, so according to my calculations I have a shutter speed of 29.45. So with my light meter handy, I would set my ISO to 500 and the shutter speed to, lets say, 30. The reading should give me the correct aperture, yes? Thanks again!
  3. Hey folks! I had a similar question and thought I'd post it here. Here's my footage as projected: http://vimeo.com/25718642 Minolta XL401 100D & Tri-X. Everything from about :33-1:10 (100D) is under the shadow of a tree and is grossly under exposed. From what you folks have already posted, I'm assuming that if your scene isn't evenly lit, the camera (in auto) is going to expose for the brightest area in the frame, even if it's a small spot of light, and leave everything else underexposed. My camera has a manual aperture, but wouldn't I need to have a light meter to set it correctly? I'm getting a bit discouraged over the whole thing. Haven't found much specifically on my camera and this film, so if anyone could offer some guidance or point me in the right direction I would be most grateful!
  4. Indeed, BPS seems to be the cheapest processor around these parts. Kodak is a few dollars less than say B&H or Adorama on the actual film, but their shipping is a bit high. They only gave me two options for shipping - Next Day & Two Day. I chose the cheapest which was a whopping $14.95! So it turns out that while the film is initially cheaper buying direct, it doesn't pay off unless you can pick it up from the facility. I understand that the less the film is in shipping the better, but paying that much for it kinda hurts.

  6. I suppose another question is where you get your film processed. Looks like Pro8mm is $15 a pop. Anyone out there a bit more competitively priced?
  7. I'm just getting into super-8 and had a few question regarding film. First, should I have any difficulty exposing Tri-X b&w with a Minolta XL401? With similar cameras I've heard no, but you can never be too careful I suppose. I'd like to have as few surprises as possible exposing my first bit of motion film. Secondly, where do you folks get your super-8 film? I've only seen it sold by B&H and a handful of small camera shops. Lastly, I'm assuming that 18fps just means movement will be a bit choppier, right? Do you think this camera is capable of professional results? Thanks! (Found this camera on ebay in incredible condition. Very excited to get some film in it).
