  1. Wow I think I just grasped CoC for the first time! But I'm still not sure why it is important to know when it comes to cinematography. Is it just a concept that you can understand if you like or is it something you really need to know which will influence you craft? I'm guessing that it's for understanding why your aperture influences depth of field. Am I right? When you're driving down the road on a wet night and you look up and see the street lights through the car window - sometimes the lights seem like fuzzy circles - I believe this is the CoC. So is the reason you see these because the water and the glass have effectively created a lens which your eye sees through? Why can't we focus on the street lights, is it because our eyes cannot focus through a long enough range of focus? Am I just confusing myself and talking rubbish? More than likely! Guy
  2. Does anyone know of any cinematography Podcasts?
  3. I'd like a few more people to comment before I reveal the secrets of the film! I agree with the size issue! It does help when you see it on full screen! Unfortuantely we haven't had time to sort out the ending yet which needs work! A bit rushed in the end. Thanks for your comments though, more PLEASE!

  5. Just been handed the job of Video Assist on a feature in the UK. Can anyone give me any good sites for any research to do with video assist the job. Does the video assist do anything other than set up the monitor to the camera, record each take and play it back to the director if nessacery?
  6. Yeah I think it could be problems with the quicktime settings, I remember having similar problems a while back! I'll try and sort it! Try here instead: http://www.media-arts.mmu.ac.uk/online-cin...ine-cinema.html Scroll down to ST-13! Look forward to hearing your comments - hope it works this time! 7. Hi - Our latest film has just been put on the internet. Some feedback would be much, much appreciated! Here's the link, it's called ST-13: http://www.media-arts.mmu.ac.uk/Streamers/...TomGuy-st13.mp4 Here's the bumf: ST13 explores an architectural structure. The film examines environments, space, time, shapes and citiescapes. All these elements then form together through the use of audio and visuals. Music by Janek Schaefer.

  9. Thanks! I'm still waiting until I have an evening free to sit down and watch Northfork! Looks brilliant! Guy
  10. I often wonder how a cinematographer chooses what shots s/he can afford to use given a certain budget. How do you plan which scenes are most important and which need to have more finance thrown at them for camera dynamics etc (if they decided that's what they wanted). How do they go through each scene and work out whether they can do what they want with the money they have? Surely this must be a nightmare! Does a cinematographer sit down with the producer? I'm intrigued!
  11. How can I get the best results on the XL2 for slow motion? What shutter, frame mode, post production settings should I apply for best results? Cheers Guy
  12. KOYAANISQATSI + POWAQQATSI - Coppola and Lucas! Comments please!

  14. Does anyone know where I can subscribe to AC in the U.K, and how much?
  15. Hi I'm on a shoot for an advert soon on 16mm, I have very little experience with 16mm and was wondering if it is possible to hook up a clam shell to the camera, and how it is possible. Thanks Guy
  16. Personally I think the shots are consistently very good, the only thing that lets it down is like someone else said some sfx of the roadsweeper and noises of the city in the morning. They would have been great to hear. Also not all of the shots need to be speeded up e.g. the water fountain/feature would have been really nice at normal speed, some of the cars going past would have been nice at normal speed aswell. Some of the timelapse is beautiful and you've got the exposure just right, which can be tricky sometimes. What camera did you use? Liked the titles aswell! Also the pace of the cuts at the beginning were too fast - it's the morning, it's tranquil and silent slow a slow pace would have been more suitable in my opinion. Maybe the pace of the editing could get quicker as the sun comes up! Maybe think about chopping it down a bit too into something smaller? Overall I think it's great!
  17. Jesus H Christ!!!!!! How can you possibly think Jude Law can play the role of such a genius! What is with Jude Law's popularity? He's sh*te! The only thing he's done that was ok was Road To Perdition! There is no hope! Arghhhhhh!

    XL2 ND's

    Is that a 1/6 of a stop?

    XL2 ND's

Does anyone know how many stops the ND's are worth on the XL2? Also, when you engage the ND's it seems you can use the space in between the clicks of each ND, is this wise, does it work? It appears to! Does anyone know what the Audio Monitor button does, it doesn't feature in the brochure? Thanks
  20. I've noticed that many 'reality' war drama's and films like Saving Private Ryan are shot with fast shutters that give that strobing kind of feel. What sort of shutter speed are we looking at to create this? If it's a seriously high shutter speed then how do they get enough light to compensate for this? Do they overlight? Does the type of stock have an influence? Guy
  21. Don't waste your time layering your video with filters and other stuff to make it look like film. If you're going to shoot video, embrace the video. It is an aesthetic all of it's own. Develop your own visual style, and don't worry if it looks like celluloid or not. Besides, film look does not equate good. If you're creative, and you do interesting things with the camera and the editing it's not going to matter if it looks like it was shot on video or film or whatever else. People can make bad films and good videos. It isn't inherently the medium. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well said!
  22. Right, call me thick but when I try to add an attachment it just uploads a pdf icon and not the picture itself. How big should my screen shots be to add several? <_<
  23. Hi people! I've got some screenshots of my own that aren't already on the internet, how can I upload them onto this thread? Guy
