  1. Oh I get ya.

Trying to neaten it up by having a single final extruded wall layer on one of the sides that will compress a bit when the case is screwed together.

It is not as bad with the latest revision of the case. But still noticeable.

    Jack!

Holy Crap man, very cool. I started this topic and kind of left it but you sure have been busy! I work for a huge Lawfirm and they do a ton of startups and TechCrunch and so on. There is a ton to talk about, let's get in touch, please email me and we can discuss a few things on design pricing. I had a prototype built as well just not as far as yours but it was functional. Even switched from Ft to Meters. Go to my site and click on the contact button.

    Awesome work!

  2. Well done Davi!

There's a lot of very strong stuff here. But a little bit that's not so special. You know which shots I'm talking about I'm sure. Cut them out. We won't miss them and you'll leave a better impression. Just my gut reaction :)

    Bruce!!

Wow, good to hear from you, It's been a long time! Thank you for the critique, I'll switch those clips out for sure. I have some better stuff I can replace them with as well. I always enjoyed reading your updates while you filmed in Russia! :) I never told you this but I learned a lot from you, even though we only briefly worked together on that short in LA with Vanessa.

    Cheers,

  3. I think that it is a good idea to bring new products to the market.

There is one thing that your product should do and is to show the distance in the Preston / Scorpio / WRC screen as the Cinetape does.

Might be a very silly thing to ask for but there are plenty of times where a focus puller doesn't have access to the Cinetape screen and you don't want to rely on your phone to see the distance because that's something that you have to hold too.. while holding the wireless follow focus and pulling focus!

    Have a good day!

Thanks, I'll definitely take your comments into suggestions as we develop this product. Lots of new ideas and thoughts.

  4. Cinetape is one of those tools that is very helpful for focus pullers, but it's very expensive. Would anyone be interested in an affordable Cinetape solution? I'm curious to know because I'm developing one that measures FT-in or M-cm, will be using a 5v rechargeable battery, LCD Display, and mounting options. Future upgrades would integrate with your phone via App, Bluetooth, and VR headset. The idea is to also make it as accurate as possible, we all know ultrasonic sensors have their issues but for those who use Cinetape and know of its value I'm curious to know if you'd be interested in a more affordable option that doesn't compromise quality and accuracy?

Let me know in the comments below, thanks.

  5. I think you defiantly have a clear style.

I would cut it down to 1:30-2:00.

    Nice work so far!

    Jeremy,

Thanks for your feed back. I'll cut it down some, I agree it's a bit long. I'm curious what you see as my style, I very much in the frame of mind of augmenting natural light. Delicately and deliberately or not at all. I study a ton of Gordon Willis, Conrad Hall, and Roger Deakins.

  6. Hey Guys,

I have to shoot a spot for a CrossFit gym in the near future, and was looking for any lighting recommendations.

We want to achieve a feel similar to this Reebok campaign as far as framing, camera movement and editing:

    https://youtu.be/UDb-7DY3CjU

As far as lighting, the Director wants this to look relatively dramatic with a darker background, nice edge lights etc (please reference photo). The talent we will be filming is a woman (about 40y/o). Any recommendations on lighting a woman in a dramatic, but flattering way? I don't have any pictures of the space that I can share, but it has a series of ceiling-mounted Fluorescent lights, no windows, and a large barn door that we can open to add some daylight fill. I was planning on opening the barn door, turning off the ceiling lights and going full daylight. As far as lighting that I have access to: Joker 800, Kino Kit (one 4 bank, two 2 banks), Arri Kit (two 150s, one 300, one 650, one 750, one 1k). I also have gels and c-stands, flags etc.

    -Sam

    Sam,

I think you should consider the shadows. From the image above it's all about controlling the light to create these shafts and pools of light. Definitely, if you want the look of the commercial you'll add lot's of smoke as in the Reebok spot they used plenty in the Crossfit gym. If you can't hang lights from the ceiling then off c-stands or using your barn door opening side light, but again that barn door may let in too much-uncontrolled light, as long as you can control it then go for it. But containing the smoke will be hard with an open barn door. I think your location and positioning will really help you or make things hard, depending on your space which we don't have reference to. You have plenty of lights and gear to pull this off in my opinion. It's hard to give you more than this with the information you've given but then again that's your job! :) Have fun!!

    Cheer,

    -Davi

  7. So it's been a long time coming for me. I finally got my reel edited. I'd love to hear some feed back. I'll be adding a few more things i shot that are still in post production but I want to keep its length at 3:30ish... Let me know what you think, I really appreciate it.

  8. I really love this combination.

Sigma Art 18-35, speedbooster T EF to MFT and BMCC 2.5k Raw.

It's really quite a strong combo. So versatile in a huge range of lighting conditions, extremely sharp, but with a quality in the BMCC that is very filmic.

Really loving the look. Of course the exposure control on the sigma is not external so it's tricky but since the Speedbooster T allows me to control the aperture from the adaptor.

  9. I think there is a big difference in quality between the day exterior scenes which have nice depth and contrast, and the interiors which are generally staged against plain white walls and lit very flatly. I would say that you need to apply your exterior strategies to your interiors and learn to light with contrast. Choose locations with darker colors and a variety of textures, use art direction, stage scenes in depth by using doorways and windows, and light in depth by creating areas of light behind dark foregrounds and vice versa. Darkness is your friend. Basically, control the light within the frame and shape it to direct the eye.

    Thanks Satsuki,

I agree, I know it's mostly due to the fact that there was no Pre-Production at all. We began shooting Dec 29 and finished the movie Feb 13th early morning! For a Valentine's day release. No Location Scouting, Art Director, or texture. True I could have done a little better on the bland white wall... I hung up that picture just to add something to the wall, there was nothing there originally when we first shot the scene. Everything was done in lighting speed with no pre-plan. I walked into a scene and 40 mins later we were shooting.

Ultimately, it was a learning experience for all involved. I know better than to shoot in those conditions but I also need to meet more people and keep making more Narratives. Obviously I want to grow and improve in the right way, by being Professional. We will make more and they will be better planned with pre-production (location scouting, lighting schematics, script breakdown, blocking!) I know that the most important thing about telling a story is keeping things simple in lighting, blocking, dialogue, visuals, etc. But that can only come after lot's of planning and testing.

    Thanks again for both Comments

  10. Just wanted to share a short film I was the Cinematographer on. The whole project was completed from start to finish in one month and a half, given our time frame I'm happy with the short film. I've been privilege to meet some great people, the whole thing was based here in Seattle.

    Camera: BMCC 2.5k RAW

Lens: Rokinon 17mm 2T and the Sigma 18-35mm Art 1.8

    Edited: Final Cut X

    Colored: DaVinci Resolve 12

Although it's in another language and sometimes hard to understand; it was a crazy fast experience, I'm very glad to have worked on it. I've worked on lot's of Bollywood Productions in LA and Las Vegas back in the day as a PA. Particularly "My name is Khan" It's funny after all those years I'm now involved in an indie Bollywood Production. I hope you enjoy it...

Please, I'd love to get some feed back on the Cinematography of the short. I wan't to improve and get better. I'd like to know any constructive feed back on things. The last night scenes of the movie were shot on available light, no bounce or anything... It was also our first days of the shoot and we were still not up to speed on things. I think some of those suffered the most.

**there are some shots one or two that were shot on the BMPCC with a very bad soft lens and they unfortunately made it in the film, also some weird artifacts from shooting in the night in really low light at the very end of the movie.**

    smile emoticon

  11. Framing looks very good in the stills, nice sense of natural light. The spot is mostly well done, I think you just need to work on the smaller details.

In the first overhead shot of the drawing, I like the little slash of light you put in on the table, but I would also like to see a soft reflection of a white card in the black coffee which otherwise has no detail. A little steam would be nice to see as well.

In the 3D printer shot, it would have been nice to see a little more detail in the white plastic. I know that usually these types of shots are quite difficult to light because of a lack of control, but it may have been possible to request a different color plastic or use a colored gel to give it some color and keep it from blowing out. Then if you couldn't turn off the lights in the room or throw up a Kino against the backside of the printer to get a more dramatic edge light, maybe consider what you could have done with negative fill. Tough situation though. I have the same problem with the other shots of the printed product. The color and texture of it lack contrast, so you need to use lighting and grip to shape it more. And because it is white, you need to pay extra attention to it not getting too bright.

The very last shot I think needed to be rethought in terms of time of day. It's dark and moody in the background, and it feels underlit. It would have made sense to me to make it either warm late afternoon or evening, when the family is all together and having family time in the living room.

I probably would have set it in the den or living room instead of the kitchen table, and created a warmer, cozier ambience with some warm sunlight coming in from the side through a window to light the background, and maybe a practical in the foreground to bring up the child. I think I would have done it as two shots - first, MCU profile of child sitting in front of tv, Dad hands him the new controller, he turns toward camera, smiles, takes it, starts playing. Cut to MCU Dad watching his son play and smiling. Then, if you want cut to a wide from the back of the room. I don't think you need it though.

    Satsuki,

Thank you for the well composed reply. I'm grateful for your critique and well thought suggestions. You're right about me needing to be more careful with the product since it was white, a little blown at the end I think.. Also I agree with the time of day choice could have been much better. Shooting when the sun was more visible in the frame would have really changed the feeling for better. And of course shaped the whole scene with more shadows. I'm glad you liked the flash of light on the first scene that was intentional. (I should of kept that mindset) The cup of coffee needed more steam!!! We had some but never heated up the cup during takes.

    Again, thank you.

  12.

Do you have any narrative samples of your work?

Not available online yet, but I have some stills from my latest Narrative. Please don't judge the color, as these are not CC or CG yet. BMCC 2.5k RAW

    Thanks

  13. A short documentary I shot exploring a little bit of the world through the eyes of the homeless. Please I'd like your thoughts on it. It's super short and I'd love to make it longer. Sadly It was a one man crew and I tried my best! I wish so much I could have had someone dedicated to the audio on set but it was just me and it was in a real world environment so I either get the interview or I don't... I feel that my audio is the weakest part of this mini doc and ironically the most important. Maybe it can be better adjusted in post but I'm not too good in that department of audio.

  14. Hey Matthew,

Long time.. :) Hey I think it looks great. (I'm on an HD display 1080) Two things came to mind, one is the film graphics behind your "buttons" I personally don't like those I feel the are kind of corny, but that's just my opinion. I think it would look nice to have something else or maybe just play with the graphic design of it and see if you can make it better idk.. Second I think it would be cool to have a background picture in the middle of your main graphics that is very faded and bleeds into black on the edges. Possibly a landscape shot of the film or something incorporates your two main graphics (the cross, and rings)

Anyways I don't know if this helps at all, but those were my initial thoughts when I first looked at the site. Very nice.

    Sincerely,

    Davi

  15. Sounds a bit like semantics but you never answered my question of how you shot this?

Okay, sorry here is how I shot this... Since that's kind of a general question I'll say anything and everything that comes to mind on the subject. I shot this with my BMCC 2.5k in RAW mode. Typically alone on set I had to use the help of whomever was there to help with a bounce or negative fill. I lit mostly by natural light and a set of 300w(x1) soft frost - 150w(x1) clear. I had also one dimmer. I used a SpeedBooster Leica to MFT with one 35-70mm zoom "Leica" lens. Also used a 28mm Zeiss, 50mm M42 (don't recall the brand), and a 35mm super Takumar m42. ahhh what else, we shot mostly during cloudy days, just the way it worked out, we did not plan that. Recorded audio with a NTG2-RODE mic. I also use a Genuses Matte box with an ND.6. I don't have an external battery solution yet so I was very conscious about battery life and kept it plugged in when possible. I ran the RAW through Davinci to CC and then brought it back for color grading. I hope this answered most of your question. Thank you Matthew for your interest.

    Best,

    Davi

  16. I love it. The colors were gorgeous. Who did your grading? Very nice eye color too!

I did the grade, I'm glad you liked it. I also edited it, my greatest wish was to have had separate individuals for those key areas but I couldn't and was forced to do them myself. My goal was to just take the RAW from DaVinci and bring it back to real life. I really never "Color Graded" cause everything I tried I ultimately didn't like, I just tried to bring up the colors to life like color correction and such. The cemetery scene was day 4 night so I didn't play with that one quite a bit to get it to look semi nightish..

  17. Hello,

I just completed working on a short film.. extremely small crew, sometimes I was the only crew member. :) Regardless of that, I'd love some constructive feed back on my Cinematography. Pointers on what to think about, good visual analyzation and thoughts. Let me just say I appreciate all of the professionals on this site helping others to grow and learn.

    Sincerely,

    Davi

  18. Hello,

I'm posting a new video I shot for some friends. They are getting married and I suggested something different..

Everything was shot with the BMCC using an OLD Tokina 35mm 2.8 lens. It's the only lens I own at the moment :P

Nothing was lit except for the interior christmas light scenes, only lit by the practical lights themselves.

Sadly, I'm not a color grade artist so please be kind with the grade.. I wish it was better too :)

I've been playing around shooting different test footages with the camera to try to get a better idea of how to expose properly

in different lighting situations. Shooting RAW is great, huge files but worth their size in post. (That can be debatable)

Again like the other one, http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=60653

I don't have a rig for this camera either sooo sadly some stuff is pretty shaky and given the crop factor my 35mm turned into some 60mm or something around that making every little movement very noticeable. Let me know what you think?

    Here is what I used:

    BMCC 2.5k
    Tokina 35mm Lens
    Genus Matte Box
    Hand Held, no Rig
