  1. Yes Phil, exactly. I set the camera to the color temp of the light - done that before with other cameras and it's come out pretty white. With the 4K it was much warmer than I was expecting. Not a huge deal with RAW, but with the prores 422, I was adding a lot of blue to balance it out, and it's still warm..
  2. Peter, I shot the video at the top of this thread and also graded it. I work as a colorist and understand the color science of the camera. The footage was graded to put a reasonable amount of contrast back and to center the white balance somewhat. My initial impression was that the on-camera whitebalance wasn't as strong/accurate as it needs to be, as I used a very familiar light which I've balanced to many times and know the temperature of, yet my footage came out surprisingly warm. It's a great ISO 400 camera for the price, that's for sure, but I'd love to see the overexposure/clipping issue get fixed and I can't see why people would put money down until the RAW support is released. Card capacity and the ability to delete files is also a major drawback - perhaps firmware updates can address those things as well.. I hope so. If they can address those things they sure have a winner at that price.
  3. It only has 12 stops of dynamic range, and while I didn't test to prove that, the results suggest to me that 12 is a bit of a stretch. Shadows get crushy really fast. That situation is exemplified by the fact that it's hard to expose for maximum range due to the lack of realitime or onboard histograms. There's just the zebra warnings to work with, not really that idea whatsoever.
  4. Bill, I don't disagree with you. It was a quick test and I didn't do any light sculpting, it was really an editorial of what was happening. Had I properly lit it, there would be more to see, but this was straight prores out of the camera. I wish RAW was enabled (coming soon, with a firmware update...) so all I did was mostly an 'auto correct' in Resolve and that's it. I wanted people to see what came straight from the camera. When the RAW is enabled, I'll properly light some scenes and let's see what that does.... A
  5. I have a Lanparte full rig, and while the handles have a bit of play even cranked down, and the quick release plate is really fiddly to put on in the day with bright light, let alone at night in the rain after 12 hours of shooting.. The FF rig is one of the best I've ever used. For $450 or whatever the FF rig goes for, it's an incredible steal. Mine has zero play. Just be careful not to tighten the nut which holds the gear down, it's aluminum and i've stripped it, still works though. It's smooooth
  6. Peter: Thank you, good feedback. I'll update my post with your suggestions. Please feel free to use the post however you wish. Heri: I used the internal battery until it ran out (around an hour) then plugged it in. I don't have an external battery, so it was on an extension cord in the studio most of the time...
  7. I received a loaner BMPC 4K for the weekend and did a few test shots. It's an interesting machine, not without faults, but quite wonderful if you keep it in its sweet-spot (which is anything under ISO 800) http://www.adammyhill.com/blackmagic-production-camera-4k-thats-what-they-call-it/
  8. The CZJ lenses have a few good ones in the bunch, but you need to remember that they're 'still photography' lenses. That said, there's plenty of 'still' lenses which work well for video production with certain limitations. Typically 'still' lenses are optimized for different requirements. Most often they breathe when focusing and almost always have aperture rings which click and are difficult to mount gears to for remote aperture control. The CZJ 35mm f2.4 is probably my favourite. I haven't tried them all but I can say good things about this one. It's sharp, has a useful macro feature built in, it has reasonable bokeh and doesn't 'breathe' TOO much. The focus ring has a decent feel to it. 35mm on a 5D3 is a useful focal length. WIde open it looses some sharpness and has a little chromatic aberration. They have good value compared to current CZ lenses.
