  1. Sorry to ask this guys, and I did some quick searches in the forum but couldn't find it, so I thought I'd have to ask. It's such a newb question, and I hope it's so stupidly simple to you guys that you can explain it to someone like me. I've never really had to light something for a studio look before, but I'm a doing a DV shoot (XL2) using a plain white paper backdrop. I have an Arri light kit with 2 normal size cans and 2 smaller ones. I also have some cheaper lights from Walmart that I've used in the past because they're light portable and have gotten the job done for real life location type things. However, as I said before, I've never done lighting for a "studio" look before. I tried a 3 point setup that I've used before. 45 degree angle from left and right and a fill in the back. However, when I do this with this white background, so much light reflects off of the back and drowns out the subject, plus the lighting just doesn't look even on the background - working with normal locations is sooo much easier. I'm also having some problems with dimples in the paper backdrop that seem to catch shadows. Please someone explain the perfect way to get nice, even, soft lighting for this type of thing. I'm thinking I might have the turn the lights 180 degrees and put a bounce card behind them or something. I don't know really. Please, someone, help!
  2. Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but I was wondering if any of you knew where to find a manual for the Canon 1014E. I've scoured the net and haven't been able to find one anywhere for free. I know filmshooting.com use to have them, but they're no longer available to download. I thought one of you might be able to help me out. Thanks.
  3. I'm not trying to start anything about the immorality of Walmart or anything, so please keep those comments to yourself, but.... I know you can get K-40 processed through Walmart, but does this hold true for all the reversal stocks? I've heard speculation that the new E-64 can be done through there also (any confirmations)? How about the B&W stocks? And if so, what would you write on the package so they know to send it to Dwaynes? I think for K-40 it was something like K 16 processing, but that wouldn't be the case for the other stocks. Thanks.
  4. Thanks for the info about spectra.... and about 2 months ago I had my K40 processed at Walmart... BTW - I still have 7 or 8 rolls of unused K40 (exp March 06) that I bought directly from Kodak in the summer and has been sitting cool in my fridge since. Does anyone know the going rate for selling that stuff? Thanks
  5. Hey. I'm a student and have only previously shot on K40 and did the nice $4.88 processing through Walmart. I'm looking into shooting on a negative stock (probably Vision2 200T and maybe one of the b&w stocks) and I was wondering what the price for having it processed would be. Does anyone know of a good lab with cheap prices. I'm a student and don't have that much money, but I love shooting on film... anyway the cheaper the better. Sorry if this has been addressed somewhere else. I searched for it, but didn't find anything. Thanks.

  7. Thanks for the replies guys. It helps a lot.
  8. Total Recorder is for Windows only - you won't be able to use it on your Mac. There are plenty of OS X applications that can record sound - I recomend chekcing out versiontracker.com. Side Note: I've been testing out recording onto an iPod with iPod Linux on it. You can record at 96 Khz - which is very high quality. I've been happy with it so far. I need to see if it will sync with super 8 film though.
  9. Hey. I'm preparing to make a short shot on a Canon Zoom 518 and a Canon 310XL. I know how to work the basic functions of these cameras, but since I don't have the manual I'm not sure how to do anything else. Does anyone know if you can manually control the exposure or are you just stuck with what the automatic gives you? Also, does anyone know where I could get an online manual for these cameras for free? I found some places for like $20, but I don't want to spend that.
  10. Thanks for the input guys. I really appreciate it. I'll check the archives for my sound questions too.
  11. I've been doing video production for sometime now, and I have just recently decided to shoot my next short in super8. I've always wanted to shoot on film and this is the most economical way for a poor college student like me to do so. I recently purchased two super8 cameras on ebay for about $15 combined (very cheap!). They are both Canons (518 and 310XL). When I bought them I didn't realize that there were super 8 cameras that actually shot 24fps. Now I'm beginning to rethink the 18fps cameras I have. I know there's a huge difference between 16 and super8, but I want it to look as much like 16mm as possible. If I do end up shooting with the 18fps cameras, is it going to look really choppy? Also will I have troubles with that frame rate when I transfer it to video for editing? If so, can someone recomend a good cheap camera ($50 or less) that will do 24fps. My second issue deals with processing. I know that I can send it directly to dwaynes in Kansas for $9 a roll. However, I've heard that you can take it to walmart and just write "K-14 Processing for Super 8 Film" on their little drop-box envelopes and it only cost $4.88 (or something really cheap) per roll. I think they just send it to Dwaynes then. Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor? My last issue deals with sound. Before I've always ran my mic straight into the XLR jacks on my XL1. However, you don't record the sound onto the film with super8. Will everything sync up fine if I record into a minidisc or ipod? I know I've asked a bunch of questions, and probably stupid ones at that. I've done a fair amount of research, but I'd like some expert opinions from people who've already gone through the process before. I'd appreciate any help!
