1. Thanks for all the photos and insight. This forum has proved to be one the best teaching tools - and much cheaper than college textbooks.
2. Sorry, wrong link. Here we go - ebay
3. This is the dolly I got. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7530586539 I believe all I need to purchase now are pipes, sandbags, and shims (and of course that missing handle) Do you think theres anything else I'm missing? thanks
4. Hey Thanks to everybody so much for their advice. In case you're curious, I ended up getting a $160 dolly from Glideshot which they only offer on ebay for cheapos such as myself. It's basically a piece of plywood with carpeting on top, but for what its worth, it looks like a stable piece of equipment. Now I need to drill a handle into it. Anybody know where I can find one? (a handle, not a drill ) Thanks again
5. Hey Gordon, the GS50 seems like it'd be perfect for me, but theres no handle in the photo. How the hell do you push or pull the thing? By the way, how do you go about making a track with pvc pipes? Thanks
6. I'm shooting some upcoming projects on a DVX-100 A and I need a cheap dolly. Preferably something with tracks to get the smoothest possible tracking shots. Like I said, I'm a recent college grad so I need something reasonable. Can we negotiate something? Thanks
7. Anyone know a way to get that doc on Kubrick (Life in Pictures I believe its called, something banal like that) without having to buy the entire boxed set?
8. I'm a big Paul Thomas Anderson fan. Anderson's films seem to always have a frequently moving camera. I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about Robert Elswit's work, particularly how he lights all these long tracking shots that are prominent in PTA's films. Also, if you have any links to articles or interviews with Elswit, that would be cool. Thanks
9. How dare you guys forget Gregg Toland in Citizen Kane :o He only had a minor role as a reporter interviewing Charles Foster Kane in the beginning news role footage, but it has to be one of the more notable DP cameos.
10. I've set out to make a few music videos this summer, and unlike previous shorts and music videos I've made for student projects, I'm going to hire a DP to shoot them for me. Why? Because I want someone who knows how to light, has a familiarity with lenses, and can basically make the story I want to tell look friggin beautiful! (FYI - we'll be shooting on a DVX-100A with a mini35 adaptor and a set of 12 lenses - still working on what the lighting package will include) The question I pose to the members of this site is - who would normally call the shots when it comes to deciding what the camera sees? (a little vague, I know) Without going into a full scale autobiography, I've always really enjoyed storyboarding all my camera angles and deciding how the camera moves (my school acquaintances have always complimented me on how my projects are shot - even if most everything else in the project was weak  ) Is it common or realistic to expect that my DP will occupy him or herself with lighting the scene and choosing lenses, and give me free reign with storyboarding and camera movement? Or will I have to learn that filmmaking is a collaborative art
11. I'm not sure if my title makes exact sense, but there's a question I've been pondering and I was hoping someone on this forum could enlighten me. HD cameras that are used for commercials, music videos, and feature films are made to capture a film look. Whereas, a sporting event that is filmed in HD seems to aim for capturing reality more accurately than SD cameras. Is there a difference between the cameras used in fictional productions and the cameras that are used for sporting events and concerts? Is there a different setting these cameras are put on to modify the look? Maybe the lenses? If someone could clarify this for me, I'd really like to know. Thanks again.
12. Oh, by no means am I dissing 24p, the stuff looks great. But a guy whose shot a few things on the Sony HDV camera told me that you can shoot a variation of HD on it, whereas the DVX has the capability of 24p and nothing more. I was led to understand that the look of the Sony was more film like. I think I'm gonna need you to shoot these music videos for me, Mr. Mullen. (loved the look of Northfork by the way ;) )
13. Oh, sorry. I think I didn't expressively mention I;m looking for a mini-dv, consumer camera. Took a look at the cameras Peter had mentioned in the above post and saw they were way out of my price range! Thanks - hope I'm not cramping your post topic, Luis.
14. Hey What do you guys think of the Sony HDR-FX1? Someone highly recommended this camera to me. I'm in the same situation as Luis in the sense that I'm looking for the dv camera that most accurately captures an HD image. The dvx-100A is a great camera, but I want something that looks more polished and professional than 24p. Thanks a lot.
15. I recently made a short film on a dvx-100 (or 100a, not sure which) and after I edited the footage on final cut pro hd, I found that the footage looked choppy. What do I mean? Well, like whenever there is a lot of movement on screen, it almost looks like there are frames missing - the movements are not smooth. I don't know what caused it to look this way, but it certainly didn't look that way before the footage was captured into the computer. Does anyone know what happened and more importantly - is there a way I can correct it? The only other problem I had with this project is that I would notice popping sounds during the audio that would arise out of nowhere. My buddy who actually owns the Mac we edited on says it might be from rendering so much. Aww, how technology spites me. The Amish life seems so appealing sometimes.
16. That sounds like the film shoot from hell. I bet not even Haskell Wexler ever had to deal with something like that! Oh, and Top Gun meets Eraserhead sounds like a great flick. Lets get a writer in here, stat.
17. Hey Guys Does anyone know if the dvx 100 is compatible with lenses? If not, is there a device that can be used as a go between to make it compatible? Thanks
