  3. Do archives use the Lasergraphics Director or is it overkill for 8mm and 16mm film?
  4. I thought it had flopped like decades ago. Or is it making a revival?
  5. Well, I was way off with my predictions of being finished with The Facebook Marketplace Prom Queen project at 2,213 images. I closed up the project a few months ago with 19, 914 images. This gal was hopefully the end of the project...I've avoided the Facebook women for months now! Here is the collection: https://archive.org/search?query=prom+teoli I used to donate lots of archival material to FIT special collections in NYC. But it got to be too much for them and they didn't want any more. So, I expanded my fashion collection to be my own FIT. <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 6. Thanks, Tyler! Oh, I know film is not dead. Our Walmart has a handful or two of boxes of film on the shelves. That is pretty impressive about the movies shot on film. We need to get charts showing film production and not sales. Charts that just show the dollar sales are not comparable to charts from back in the day when film was a lot cheaper. It would be good to see charts of film being sold in feet or rolls produced then vs now. <><><><> 'Cornered' 1973 Hollywood, CA Selection from 'Peering into the World of 1970's Hollywood & L.A.' 2012 by D.D.Teoli Jr.
  7. I was going to put this in the Off Topic section, since it is historical in nature. But looks like that section is shut down as I can't access or view it any longer. So, this section looks like the most apropos section to put it in. This may have some interest for the cinematographer that is trying to recreate an old look for titles/ intertitles for a project. Back in the day, magazines dedicated to the home movie market, would have a page or two of premade titles in each issue for them to use in their movies. The person would set up a copy stand with close up lens diopter and shoot the premade titles / intertitles for their film. Sometimes the titles would be generic. Other times they would be for a suggested project. These are from 1940. I've got about 2 feet of 'Home Movies,' 'Cine' Photographer' & 'Movie Maker' magazines from the 1930's-1940's to scan. I will eventually upload them to the Internet Archive. Lots of interesting film history in them. <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 8. Post some samples of before and after of your Resolve work. When shooting on the fly it is not always doable to get it right in-camera. A good documentary cameraman makes do and brings home the goods best they can. So, post work is very important to make up for shortcomings. Selection from 'Whoop-Whoop' project 2014 Photo D.D.Teoli Jr. This photo for example took some work...in Lightroom. I don't use Resolve, so don't know if this level of post work is doable. As of now I use Movavi which is basic, but it covers most of my needs as an archivist. Although it is pretty poor for color grading and am dissatisfied with it for grading. Can you dodge and burn a scene with Resolve then carry it over with the computer to make the frames blend? Or does it have to be redone for each frame? In other words, let's say you burn in a lady's purse. Will it find the purse in selected frames and burn it in the same as the first frame? Or does cine' software not do that? If you don't know what burn in means...it means, make it darker in whole or in spots as selected. Or is Resolve even capable of burning in detail?
  9. Lasergraphics has a non-Bayer sensor on their top end Director scanner. The cheaper LG scanners have Bayer sensors. From what I've read about camera sensors, the Bayer option offer a less sharp image. If so, why not drop the Bayer filter from all their scanners to get maximum sharpness? <><><><> Cine'-Kodak ad 1932 DDTJRAC Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 10. Thanks for the rundown, Tyler. I just look at the charts. I don't study film much. I'm around film all the time...in the Archive. For my own use I'm 100% digital. So, I'm an outsider, Tyler. In the old days, I was 100% film. From the charts, film does not look like a booming business. To me it looks like Kodak is 'just' surviving. Or are the charts misleading, Tyler? 11. I've only seen 2 used LG's scanners in the last few years. 1 was in L.A., a Scan Station Personal. The other one was their big model, a Gov. surplus buy. With all the scanners they make you'd think more used ones would be available.

I was going to post it in Off-Topic, but have not been able to post or view that section for a few days now. <><><><> Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection Daniel D. 13. Now, getting back to this Retroscan issue with people waiting 12 months and the company seemingly stopping production, per Dan's earlier post. Has anyone ever been burnt buying a film scanner (Non-Retroscan) or have major problems with the company?
  14. OK, agreed, but film is not what it used to be as far as sales. If it was, do you think Fuji would have bowed out? Kodak has gone through so many down cycles it is pitiful. I don't keep up with the day-to-day affairs of Kodak, but the amount of product, chemicals, equipment and media they used to produce was staggering Tyler.
  15. No, nothing like the old Kodak in its heyday. A shadow of its former self Robert. I started using Kodak from the late 1960s. Their graphic arts division is pretty much gone and dye transfer division is extinct, Robert...just to name a few. And their graphic arts division was huge!
  16. I'm surprised Kodak sells much of anything nowadays. They have really gone to hell, at least with their film products and chemicals.
  17. Thanks Dan! That is something about Moviestuff. Too bad as it filled a niche for the broke film scanner. It sounds like the scanning companies are making the scanners dummied down and not much control then. I've only used the Retroscan.
  18. You should just do the tests...to show. That is your biz! Breastfeed the info to them. Your website does a pretty good job at it already...but go the distance, Robert! Cine' / photo deals in images, not in words or charts.

  20. $1 - $2 a reel sometimes for 'pig in a poke' collections...but 8mm quality is generally too low for me. If you have the time, you can throw the dice. And you can always put back up for sale and get most of your money back. But it all takes time! This would be good if you have some lackies working for you and could sift through thousands of reels. But they may not have the 'eye' you need to find the gems. Just depends.
  21. A while back there was a member on the forum in NYC that complained their movie career was not evolving as fast as they had hoped. I can't remember all the details, but my feelings on that would be...if you can afford to live in NYC, even just, you are a success! Recently photographer Elliott Erwitt's NYC Central Park's residence came up for sale after he passed away. I seldom study NYC real estate prices. I could never even afford the co-op's maintenance fees, let alone the sales price. So, I was kinda shocked it was so high and it sold so fast. It is a whole different world in NYC. Erwitt had a little studio downstairs as well. Between the 2 co-ops, the monthly maintenance fee was just under $20,000 a month. Here are some of Erwitt's photos... <><><><> Daniel D. 22. I was watching the movie Downfall (2004) about Hitler's last days in his bunker. It is an outstanding movie on the subject. They had some German 'tank killer' kids using panzerfaust anti-tank weapons to take out Russian tanks. I had never heard of them, so I looked them up. Whenever I want to learn about a thing, I study it in pictures. I'm not much of a reader. I will do a little reading after I see the photos, but generally I like the photos. The amount of armor the panzerfaust penetrates is amazing. The cone shape design concentrated the explosive charge. The panzerfaust was the model for all future RPG's. Panzefaust means 'armor fist' or 'tank fist.' Here are 111 pages of them if you have an interest... A Survey of Panzerfaust German Anti-Tank Weapons D. D. Teoli Jr. A. C. : D. D. Teoli Jr. A. 23. Back in the day, people would always ask if photography was an art. If there are judgments to be made and the outcome is uncertain...there is art in the process. This art can be of a creative nature or a technical nature, but either way, there is art involved.
  24. Yes, that is why I've said the scanner companies should make videos showing how to operate their machines and the range of the scanner's abilities. Even offer standardized film with it to scan and compare to their scans. But this seems to be too much to ask for in the breastfeeding dept in this day and age.
