Guess it is not bad if you are charging $10K a day to scan 35mm films. First little 8mm reel I had scanned years ago cost may $300+ for the MP$, extra DVD's, noise reduction and getting the TIFF files. Scanning companies are rolling in $.

It also comes with some DaVinci gear and another film gate. But don't know what it is all for. You would think they would take that time to dust off the control panel. I understand the scanner companies want to sell you maintenance insurance when you buy a scanner. I guess you would really need it for this baby.

Someone on eBay had a film about a nudist camp. They said magnetic sound was added later and then a commentary recorded. Was it very pricey to add magnetic sound to a film? Was magnetic sound used mainly for post sound addition to silent films? Or did they have magnetic sound film they ran through the camera to record sound live? What sort of recording device did they use to record on the magnetic strip when adding sound to a film? Thanks

Yes, agree. Personal prejudice is a big deal nowadays. And it is not just in the music video area. In the old days there was not as many people to take a job. Now they have lots of replacements and will can your ass in a second. I guess the internet messed things up. Someone sees you doing something questionable, then snap a cell phone shot, put it online and boom! Now flash mobs can form in no time and set out to destroy anyone that does not mesh with the prevailing world view held by those in power. That was not easy to do back in the day. Plus the police would crack heads if the mob acted up. Depending on the city, the mob has full control. Cops are ordered to stand down. This is not Mayberry anymore. Since you are so paranoid, protect your name if you have concerns. Bee choosy or use an alias for questionable work. Trouble is you never know when something is acceptable now and cancelable later. No magic bullet. You can make yourself crazy over this stuff.

Well, I always said...if it is legal do as you like. But in 2021 that does not always fly any longer. The only project I didn't like doing and quit, was acid attack victims. Too depressing and sad. Plus all the material I was working with was low res. I've mentioned this before to the group, one of the few working prejudices I have is with low res material . So I figured why depress myself for low res garbage and gave up on that project.

Well, I got the Jackson DVD from the library. About 4 hours long. Maybe it was 2 hours too long. The last 2 hours was just more crying and complaining about Jackson having sexual contact with the kids. Amazed the stage moms were so mesmerized they would let their kids sleep with Jackson. In the future things may be worse for professionals. So, depending on your project, you may have to pick your projects carefully or use a nom de plume / alias or go uncredited. It will be just like the old stag film days with made-up names for credit. The dems own MSM, the newspapers, high tech, social media, TV, Hollywood, major league sports, popular culture, big biz, governors and many mayors. They own the schools, higher education. Plus they own half of America's vote. So, see how your project meshes with them before you ruin your carrer. The reps have no power. They can't cancel anyone really. I wrote ARRI to inquire how much a scanner cost. They were confused about my inquiry. They didn't give me a price, but they did give a couple of sources to check on getting scans done even though I didn't ask about that. Here is their reply to my inquiry as to buying a ARRIscanner. ARRI doesn’t offer film scanning/recording services. I would recommend checking out the following places: West Coast: Fotokem and NBC Universal East Coast: Kodak and Technicolor/Postworks ARRI does not seem very promising for me. I guess it would be nightmare getting one repaired with such poor communication. I will stick with working to buy a Lasergraphics. One thing in ARRI's favor, they are prompt with email replies.

Well for my type of work a 4k machine is fine. Most of my films are multi gen dupes. My main want is the sound scanning ability. But I'd like a good image as well. The thing to do if you have time / money is to pp the individual TIFF files of a film scan. The problem is trying to match each frame if the pp is extensive. This took me 2.5 hours in Lightroom and HDR software. It is an example of the highest level revovery that is possible from a 6x6 or 70mm film image. If you had some type of AI software that could duplicate all the adjustments to the frames needing work it may fly. But the work was too extensive for me to duplicate into multi frames. The problem with duplication is with localized contrast grading aka dodging and burning. The problem is not with general controls that affect the entire image.. To get this level of recovery you need both HDR and extensive contrast grading. Either alone won't cut it.

Thanks! Isn't that sad. Never heard much about the Arriscan. Maybe I heard the name mentioned before, but nothing in detail. Some of these scan makers market their products like they are top secret nuclear codes. Maybe it would be good for me if it is outdated. While I would like HDR, I can do without it due to a low budget. What do Arriscan's sell for? In place of HDR I sometimes have to scan film sections at different exposures and marry the best scans in post. It is not HDR, but it is better than a one exposure scan. I do not like doing it as it does not represent how things were projected back in the day. When films were projected they were generally done with one exposure, they didn't have the luxury of changing exposure like we do. So I am torn between showing films as they were projected or showing films in a better light, with the limited hardware and software I have. But HDR is something I'd really like to have. HDR is very important for exposure timing (or is it exposure continuity?) of archival material that was not exposed properly in various sections.

How does the Arri compare to a cheap Lasergraphics for archival work of warped 16mm? Like most other scan makers they list no price.

Ran out of edit time. Just wanted to make one thing clear... They got better film archives in the world. But they are not hi res open content and I doubt as 'diverse and inclusive' as mine...due to their prejudice. (Or as they like to call it...their scope or mission.)

I am going to submit a Kickstarter for purchase of a cheap Lasergraphics Archivist sound film scanner / and some extra $$ to acquire more films. (Or use the excess to pay taxes if I owe them.) Maybe $85K - $90K is the goal. I contacted Kickstarter and informally ran the project by them as it is a problem child. They prohibit porn in the Kickstarter, and about 35% - 40% of my film Archive is ancient porn. I have one of the most diverse and inclusive open content underground / above ground film archives in the world! And it is not because I'm a dem. It is because I have no prejudice and have a wide range of interests within my scope of social documentary collection. To me it makes no difference if the person is having sex with a dog or baking bread...it is all social documentary. I've never met anyone with less prejudice for archival work than me. The only prejudice I have is for low res garbage. But I may not go into all that detail with the Kickstarter crowd. (They will have to search for it here.) Surprisingly artists are very prejudicial many times. You would think artists would be free wheeling. And they are, but only within their narrow worldview. And to make things clear, I am not without prejudice. I got lots of personal prejudices, but I check it at the door. If I hate a person or thing...I archive them better because of the hate. Prejudice does not enter my archival work. Kickstarter didn't shoot the proposal down outright, they said to submit it for approval. So will do that. I checked out GoFund Me and it looked like it is not that good for my project. Plus I could not find a contact email or form to ask them questions. I wrote to a few patrons of the arts to see if they had an interest in underground film preservation, but never heard back anything. Not a surprise. Seldom get replies in this day and age even if not asking for $$.
