  1. All these things should be documented with sample scans put up at the Internet Archive or other online venue. How did you aquire it only to give it away? Was it good for its time and it got outdated? Is this the unit? https://www.broadcaststore.com/store/prod_detail.cfm?eq_id=702940

  3. Isn't that summtim. 650+ views, almost 2 years go by and no one has any input. Really sad testament to this forum. Or are they scared of signing their name to a comment? Well, maybe that is it. They all got jobs and houses. Sounds like an interesting topic. This is the first I heard about it Max. Amazon.com: Leaving Neverland: Movies & TV Looks like an interesting film. I will get it from my library. Didn't research it much, but Amazon's DVD is a DVD-R. Wonder why it was not pressed? For me, if I was qualified for the work, it probably would not matter. I don't own any real estate. My car is almost 12 years old. My gear is all old. No steady job. They would only 'get practice' suing me. But not everyone is like me. If you got a project like that where no one wants to shoot it, put up want ads at the film or art schools. Beside $$, another thing to worry about now is the physical backlash when you don't mesh with the popular culture and prevailing world view. I used to carry around revolvers back in the day. The summer of love 2020 proved that revolvers are not much good in the new world order. Now it is Glocks with hi cap mags and an AR- SBR in the trunk's pass through. No matter what you do...someone, somewhere is going to be offended. And the freedom of speech thing is out the door in 2021 America. (And I hope to never have to use the SBR...it will blow your ears out!) Now Max, $$ does not drive all things. In an intro to his review on Amazon of Among the Bohemians: Experiments in Living 1900-1939 by Virginia Nicholson, Lleu Christopher distills what fuels the bohemian life. “Nicholson has a genuine appreciation for the bohemian spirit, and acknowledges the sacrifices made by many obscure artists, poets and others existing (often marginally) at society’s fringes. For some, the idealistic decision to forsake conventional society for a life dedicated to art, romance, poetry or perhaps a vaguer idea such as beauty or authenticity was never rewarded with any kind of material success. Was there any compensation for those living such marginal lives? Nicholson makes the case that for many, a life dedicated to art, romance and freedom is its own reward. For those who embody the bohemian spirit, material comforts and security are not worth the price of suppressing one’s creativity and individuality.” So artists may have other motives to do a thing, other than money Max.
  4. Ran out of edit time. Just wanted to make one thing clear... They got better film archives in the world. But they are not hi res open content and I doubt as 'diverse and inclusive' as mine...due to their prejudice. (Or as they like to call it...their scope or mission.)
  5. I'm thinking it is a gift and no taxes. Or am I wrong? And if wrong, I guess you need to add the tax bill to the Kickstarter goal as well as the commission fees. I am going to submit a Kickstarter for purchase of a cheap Lasergraphics Archivist sound film scanner / and some extra $$ to acquire more films. (Or use the excess to pay taxes if I owe them.) Maybe $85K - $90K is the goal. I contacted Kickstarter and informally ran the project by them as it is a problem child. They prohibit porn in the Kickstarter, and about 35% - 40% of my film Archive is ancient porn. I have one of the most diverse and inclusive open content underground / above ground film archives in the world! And it is not because I'm a dem. It is because I have no prejudice and have a wide range of interests within my scope of social documentary collection. To me it makes no difference if the person is having sex with a dog or baking bread...it is all social documentary. I've never met anyone with less prejudice for archival work than me. The only prejudice I have is for low res garbage. But I may not go into all that detail with the Kickstarter crowd. (They will have to search for it here.) Surprisingly artists are very prejudicial many times. You would think artists would be free wheeling. And they are, but only within their narrow worldview. And to make things clear, I am not without prejudice. I got lots of personal prejudices, but I check it at the door. If I hate a person or thing...I archive them better because of the hate. Prejudice does not enter my archival work. Kickstarter didn't shoot the proposal down outright, they said to submit it for approval. So will do that. I checked out GoFund Me and it looked like it is not that good for my project. Plus I could not find a contact email or form to ask them questions. I wrote to a few patrons of the arts to see if they had an interest in underground film preservation, but never heard back anything. Not a surprise. Seldom get replies in this day and age even if not asking for $$. And evn if they did have an interest, being connected with me would look bad for them. ...if you have any suggestions about submitting a Kickstarter proposal, feel free to chime in.
  6. https://www.verdict.co.uk/fujifilm-ransom-demand/ ...USA should hire Fuji to protect them!
  7. When you send out proposals and get nowhere...don't get your feelings hurt. There are so many incompetent people out there masquerading as professionals. Today I got an email from the Akron Art Museum. They wrote to me about a print portfolio I had sent them in 2013 as a proposed donation. They said they didn't want it. It took them 8 years to reply. The previous record from a museum for a reply / rejection was about 6 years. Art museums are pretty bad. And it is not only art museums, it is special collection libraries as well. I'm not going into detail because I still have to deal with museums / special collection libraries. I just wish I could spill some of the proverbial beans on them.
  8. I can't get enough of them and never know what I will find. Everyday is like Christmas. Recently I acquired some 16mm childbirth films from the 1940's. They were labeled 'baby being born.' They turned out to be a bonanaza. The views of 75 year old surgical rooms and dress is fascinitning in itslef, but there is so much more. The anesthesiologist continually drips ether out of a bottle on a dust mask for knocking the gal out. Another clip has the assistant pushing the baby back in the vagina as it tries to come out. Intertitle says something like: Retarded birth to allow for episiotomy. Maybe they wanted more $$ for the episiotomy? Although in 1940's I don't think healthcare was run as a big biz as it is nowadays. Most likely the baby's head was too big for the mommy's birth canal and it was not greed. I have a bunch more in the childbirth series, all sort of things, different types of Caesareans, twins birth, breech birth, etc. They were part of the 50+ films I scanned over the last couple weeks. Still need to PP'em, but I put 2 from the childbirth series up at the I.A. for your perusal. nsfw https://archive.org/search.php?query=childbirth teoli If the Retroscan blows up or gets stolen, I got my money out of it anyway. 50 films = about $8,000 for scanning fees. Now I just need to get the other 1050 films scanned! But I'm not in a rush. Still holding out hope for a benefactor to buy me a cheap Lasergraphics scanner. So, I'm in no hurry to scan all the films twice. And due to no room to work, I had to stow the Retroscan to make room for the copy stand work that I am doing now. And that Retroscan is tiny, so you know I'm cramped. A Japanese / American guy I met, that took a trip to Tokyo, told me they don't go by square feet in Tokyo... they go by square inches! That sounds like me. I'm always looking to find some more square inches! My dream house would be a house with 40 or 50 chrome wire shelving units lining the walls. Getting back to that retarded birth... I may make a 'Retarded birth to allow for episiotomy' production company with the clip of the baby being pushed back in the vag . That would be crazy huh! I love adding some craziness to the films, certain films that is. The more business like films and films that require more respect get more conservative production companies. But it is fun 'having fun' with the films. And when you are underground you can do as you please. I came up with crazy production company names after seeing so many stupid production company names on films where they were trying their best to not be stupid. I thought to myself, "Jeeesus, couldn't they find a better name than that?" So I figured, let me have some fun with it.

  11. WTB: 16mm shorts on Construction, Industry, Medical, Dental, Farming / Agriculture, Vocational and Time Capsule films. They can be B&W or color, silent or sound. Faded red is OK, but prefer decent color. Vinegar is OK, as long as not heavily warped. But red films or vinegar are not worth a lot. Industry can be anything made in factories. Construction can be big or small. Looking for vintage material...1920's - 1960's. Time capsule films show life in earlier times and can be any interesting subject matter. Same with vocational films. If not sure...run them by me. Write Direct: w1000w@aol.com Dan
  12. Just got started with AEO-Light today. First time out I got sound. It needed some tweaking, but still impressive how the software worked. Full story... NSFW Using AEO-Light to Extract Optical Sound from Cine’ Film – Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection – II (home.blog)

  14. Found on eBay. Goldberg made some nice reels...just add a glass top for the drinks.
  15. Sure they did. Small, lightweight cams opened up new prospects not obtainable with big cams. But I just don't get all these arguments. Use what you like and use the tool that fits the job best. If you like heavy cams go for it. Personally I like small, light cams.
  16. Obviously not enough times...I didn't know it till I read your post. Lots of people don't want to archive what they know or have done. So you are not alone. I talked with an old film collector on eBay. Pleaded with him many times to write it down or let me interview with some oral history. Nope, not interested one bit and he was ancient, could kick off at any time and everything is lost.
  17. Retroscan uses extension tubes and thickness washers. It is a pain. But Retroscan is relatively inexpensive, so goes with the territory and can't complain much. It uses 'C' mount lenses. I will have to see if they make a variable extension tube for it.
  18. Thanks for the history lesson Frank. You should write a book. Or PDF it all and put on the I.A. Or do an oral history recording, whatever. One day we don't wake up and poof...it is all gone. Get it down while you can.
  19. Purchased years ago. Provenance was Bob Monkhouse collection. https://archive.org/search.php?query=Mary+Pickford+Excerpts+Bob+Monkhouse Developed a liking for Pickford after seeing her in M'liss. Plus scanning and working with this film developed more interest in Pickford. She was something. Get a copy of Mary Pickford: Muse of the Movies from your library. Great early days Hollywood coverage. Pickford wanted to burn all her movies when she died. What a nut. She was worried people would make fun of them. OK, maybe not a nut, but just an egomaniac. David Mullen was connected with the film as well.
  20. OP... I'd advise you to forget the fight. Try the two and see for yourself. If you like film, shoot it. If you like digital, shoot it. No cine' police to tell us otherwise. I used to have lots of comparison samples with still film vs digital on Tumblr. But in 2019 Tumblr shut me down and I lost it all. 35mm flatbed scanned negative film = about 3 or 4 mp with a point & shoot camera. It is not very high res stuff. That is also its beauty. Digital can sometime look plasticy and fake cause it is too sharp. I never tested chrome, so can't say. But film has a beautiful organic grain structure and nice blacks and shadows. Digital can have noisy blacks and shadows. I'm ALL digital with my personal work and ALL film with my archival work. Good luck with figuring it out!
  21. I'm looking to swap collections of digital archival material for other digital archival material. Here is the scope of my interests. But I am open to areas beyond what is listed here. So run them by me. https://archive.org/details/collection-scope-of-the-daniel-d.-teoli-jr.-archival-collection/mode/2up The trades don't have to be one for one swaps. Just fair trades. But I am a stickler for decent res material. Not interested in low res garbage unless it is very historic and unavailable. Large trades will have to be by disc. 22. Wedding Sampler 1950s D.D.Teoli Jr. A C. : D.D.Teoli Jr. A.C. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive An aspiring cinematogrpaher's 16mm Kodachrome wedding sampler from the 1950's. Lots of timing and color grading went into it. Maybe not that much, but too much for me. I'm used to ancient multi-generational stags where little can be done. It is not like HDR will save the dupes. Nothing in the highlights or shadows to save. I need to learn better software too Movavi is fine for working with things that don't need much post. But I'd like more controls to fine tune things. There is a bride in the film I took out clips of for my 'Kissy Face Productions.' Look for her. Everyone kissed on the lips back then...I guess cousin Eddy would have loved it!
  23. Yes, general distribution. So I gather the optical printer was just used for effects most of the time. I thought everything went through the optical printer to duplicate. I never knew they had cine' contact printers, I just guessed they may have contact printed duplicates. But makes sense. motion picture contact printer - Google Search I'm learning more about old time film duplication. I found a film in my collection called Tulipe. It is an old school 1920-1930 stag from France. The German, Third Reich run Reichsanstalt für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht had made a dupe of it with their logo on the tail. Then further down the line it must have been duped in Mexico or the USA. Somewhere before the final dupe I got most of the intertitles got switched the wrong way. But the title and one intertitle was right reading. The film dupers remind me of Earl Shieb. When I was a kid he had commercials on TV saying he would paint any car for $29.95. If you brought your car in with a piece of tape on it...he would paint right over the tape instead of removing it. The stag film dupers of yesteryear must have been the same way. 1977-78 Earl Shieb Auto Painting Commercial - YouTube
  24. Do you use extension tubes on the lens? Or are they built with a wide range of adjustable magnification settings?
  25. In the past, were 16mm dupes always optical printed or did they also make contact prints?
