  1. Loved "Crossing" The others were ok but I dont understand French so I wouldnt know if it was funny or not and I wouldnt know why you parodized the Matrix but I cant judge so ignore that comment. I would love to know how you got your stuff to look so good and film like with TRV740E. Thats amazing please share im sure a lot of us would love to know. Did you use magic bullet to change to 24p?
  2. I didnt mean it like whos better and who was here first I meant who was being called David S. thats all ill change it I didnt mean any harm by it at all... It was more like a joke.
  3. Thank you. Now that im getting the right answers that are helping me understand lighting, I realized some of you took offense to the way I worded my question at first which was not the way I intended it to seem. What I read in my book was the 3 point lighting system. What you guys are telling me (or what I think) is that all lighting depends upon the situation and depends on what you want it to look like. I think now I have an understand of the way lighting is used. I for sure dont know how to light but at least I know what your doing when your doing it. Thank you again. I guess im now being called. DAVID S.
  4. All good points I should have said if rather shoot dv its cheaper and looks good nonetheless. Super8 will cost a lot of money for telecine, processing, stock. Id rather just shoot minidv and then work my way up to film when I am ready.
  5. I guess I took everything the wrong way and everyone ganging up on me shows maybe I was wrong. But I just wanted to know the basic principles of lighting and I am sorry for calling you guys cocky and all that stuff. But please do not flame me and make fun of my lack of knowledge. I havent been doing this as long as most of you but I have read many books and im trying my best to learn as much as I can. The way I felt was everyone was making fun of my becuase I didnt understand lighting. I read one page in a book and understood it after that. I didnt ask to tell me how to be a pro I just wanted to know why it was so important and I dont think that was to hard of a question to ask any other forum and any other first poster other then David Mullen and I would have gotten decent answers. But I do apologize and hopefully thats more then that kid in your class ever did. I am not cocky at all I was just defensive becuase I felt I was getting made fun of for no reason. To be honest I suck at taping football games but I guess I just know the right people. Thank You David
  6. Give the kid a god damn fu**en break. You know what he meant. Im sure its easier to become a cinematographer then a professional actor. What the hell do you know anyway. God, David Silverstein (STANDING UP FOR NEW PEOPLE IN THE BUSSINESS)
  7. Hi, I previous was a graphic designer and now I am into film. I would like to try to make a movie poster with someones short or full length feature. For free of course just as an expierent. You would have to send me at least long clips of the movie or the whole movie for me to be able to do it. Contact me on this thread or on aim at Staying Silver.
  8. You guys are the kings of filmmaking. I wish I was like you. Most of you never even have directed anything so please dont act like you know everything. The conversation could have stoped at the 4th post but people like to make people feel bad so they can feel good. All you need to grow up. By the way I learned how lighting works by looking it up in my Video Basics 3 textbook and I have pretty decent basic grasp on it so let the flaming begin again dont mind me. And I appreciate the understanding TSM. We do at least from here and other forums take a lot of poop but we will see how everyone turns out no one here is even worth calling a professional. I am at the age 16 and im getting paid 100 dollars a day to shoot sports for 3 hours. I am working 2 days this week and getting 200 dollars a week. I bet thats more then some people on here who are flaming me but flame on if it makes you feel better I can take it.
  9. Ask David Mullen hes the most professional on this forum. If he has time he will most likely do it. As for full sail I dont know much but its definitly VERY VERY expensive around 30k a yaer I think.
  10. Well im buying a MAC and just using my schools FCP but im going to use avid free dv for little stuff at home. Sorry I dont know how much 1500 euros transfers to. Surprisingly adobe and apple dont give extreme discounts to update your program which is disappointing.
  11. Thanks did not know that. Ive been using Fuji Mini Dv tapes does anyone know if its wet or dry lube. I use it becuase my teacher gets it and gives it out for free but I really dont want to have to replace my head.
  12. AWSOME. So happy for you getting such a nicely sized budget. What the real question is, is are you shooting the whole thing on a DVX100???? Congratulations Dave
  13. Id rather shoot a DVX100 over Super 8 anyday. Super8 doesnt look as good and you dont get freedom becuase your still using film so you have to keep a certain ratio. With Mini-Dv you can go crazy and shoot everything and get shoots you didnt think you were going to use but wound up using it.
  14. I just downloaded Avid FreeDV its not bad at all the only thing is you can only do one video track and thats rough when im used to using FCP at school and having 8 tracks. Anyway the only thing I found to be a problem was you have to CAPTURE footage in AVID or it takes forever. Peace. David Silverstein
  15. Hey Alex, Ive posted on your thread in the studentfilmmakers.com forum. I bought this short and it was well worth the money. He teaches you how he did everything including color correction. Im pretty sure he used almost 90% just FCP to do his color correcting which is very impressive. He shows how he made Mini-DV look more like film and all that good stuff. Keep us updated on BROKEN: The Feature is it a possibility?
  16. Like the person after you said for my low budget it is overpriced or I should rephrase that to be way out of my range when I can use a BetaSP which almost all the stations around me use and almost all festivals accept. Thank you for your helpful tips. I will see if my teacher has a digibeta deck im not sure if he does. We have been using BetaSP in class but ill have a hard copy on an external harddrive to keep in a safe envirionment. I will back it up mutiple times.
  17. Thanks. That narrows my options low enough lol. Anyway eh I think DVCPRO50 is way overpriced and not worth it. I will master it with DigiBeta or BetaSP which I have access to several BetaSP decks.
  18. LOOKS AMAZING. The only thing that I didnt like about the teaser was I couldnt tell if it was more about drugs or him learning to live on the streets. Is it weed or coke they are doing a lot of this stuff wasn't clear. To get a theatre showing it might be hard with all hte violence and drug use to even get an R rating but I absolutly loved the teaser and would want to purchese it if it ever was realeased on dvd.
  19. Well I plan on shooting a short on a DVX-100a and I was wondering what my tape options are...? First off I am lead to believe that Mini-DV cams are able to use a DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 tape am I correct? And if so DVCPRO50 I read it better in the long run for use on a projector if you plan on having your movie screened is that right? What would you suggest for my situation I plan on shooting on 24p advanced mode with the cinegamma setting on.
  20. I am a junior in highschool and I take a 3 hour tv/video course over taking other electives and art classes, its somehting my school offers. We have a studio with studio grade cameras and lighting. A green screen, control room, and final cut pro editing systems for all of the 8 students. I plan on going to college for Cinematography/Film and I want to make a movie so I can showcase it as work when I get interviewed or something in that nature. I am in the preproduction process of a movie which im not finished writing. Im writing the script as a feature and im going to shrink it into a short preview to see if I can get some money to do the whole feature. I need to know about lighting to obviously make my short look good and all of your answers have been helpful but a select few who come off quite cocky but I wont give out names, im going to respect their input. The short will be based out of NYC, but int. shots will be done in the suburbs of nyc most likely.
  21. Im not an expert but I would suggest using the smallest amount of light needed to get exposure so it doesnt look like its artificially lit and gives a realism feel to it like a movie theatre is.
  22. I get it now but for what im looking to do a small light set is all im going to need becuase I dont plan on shooting a scene for hours. Thanks for the help.
  23. I know I hear all around that lighting is extremely important probably one of the most important parts of filming but I dont understand with video why you need it so much when I use my consumer dv camera in a school in the day or something like that the lighting is fine and acceptable I dont understand why people stress so much on lighting when they arent using film... Can anyone help me to understand.
  24. Well you do bring up a good point that I never did think of which is lighting. But what I do know is that two tight cu face shots on each of the two characters performing the dialogue would work out and would be what I want. I do think with a lot of movies im not going to over due the lighting and im going to use the bare minimum needed; its just the way I like it. Youve seen reality tv with no lighting systems really so you can get it to look good. Any other comments both were very helpful.
  25. Hi, as I was watching Laguna Beach I saw that they use two cameras to do a dialogue scene so they cut back and forth in real time. I thought this is a very nice REAL feel to it for a scripted dialogue scene. Its easier on the editor and with 100s its not expensive if you have a 100 you can just rent another one and bang out your dialogue scenes in one day. Anyway I wanted to know your comments on this technique... has anybody ever used this technique? David Silverstein Student Filmmaker
