  1. I also think that shooting over cranked on a hvx and having your talent play the track extra slow seems like your best bet. I shot a 35mm music video in film school that was the exact mirror of what you should do. I shot at 48fps and re-recorded the song twice as fast but kept the pitch the same. Make sure your band has lots of time to practice playing along with the song at the new speed (as you are undercranking it is probably a lot easier that playing a song faster and overcranking). My project ended up working perfectly, the timing of mouth movement lined up perfectly with the song (not that i could not adjust that in post). So the final effect i got, was a band playing a song and visually their movements were in slow motion, altho the song was still being preformed at its normal speed (thank you Spike Jonze for the idea, from your music video of Weezer - Undone). So back to your music video, I recommend the HVX if youir going HD as its variable frame rates are perfect for your project. As you are undercranking as opposed to my project where i overcranked you could easily use a dv camera (try to get one with progressive scan). If you would have to rent a dv camera anyway, go for the hvx instead, as it is not that much more $. If you decide to go the dv route just shoot the project on progrssive mode at 30fps and then just speed up the clip as you like in post. Good luck with you shoot Julian
  2. hey... is this Saba from capilano college? Anyway, a ramp is when a camera changes from one frame rate to another, unfortunatly the HVX200 can only shoot in multiple frame rates. this means that once you choose one frame rate, you cannot change to another, without stoping the recording. The HVX cannot record in any sort of reverse mode either. you can simpily reverse the footage once in final cut pro altho.
  3. When viewing the HVX200 at a hands on at Lauren Laphams in Vancouver, I was told the cam had a new/different on board computer. I gathered that changes to the (flash memory?) could be made while the camera was connected to a computer through USB. At the risk of sounding totally ignorent and going off topic, i did not ask the panasonic rep much more about the new computer system. But I got the impresion that upgrades to the cameras (OS ?) could be made by just downloading a patch supplied by a authorized panasonic internet site. If this is true / or part of this is true, please let me know. and if it is true, that would lead me to belive that a software upgrade could solve the "mirroring the LCD, without physically flipping the screen" problem; rather than waiting for a HVX200a.
  4. I have 10'000 feet of 16mm, and i am trying to get a ball park figure of what it would cost to transfer all of my takes to digi beta tapes. I belive its about 4 hours worth of shots. Any help to find a general idea of this cost would be helpful.
  5. thanks Häakon your post are always very helpful :)
  6. Well I just downloaded some great clips people have shot on the HVX200, and posted on DVinfo.net. And the proof is in, this camera is well worth its very cheap price tag. The quicktime player i have works fine for viewing the clips, but i cannot import them to final cut pro HD, or DVD pro studio 4. The two basketball clips posted work great, but all the other clips cannot be recognized. If there is some plug-in, for final cut pro HD version 4.5 or something for DVD pro studio 4; I would be very grateful for any advice on getting the HD clips on to a DVD. The college i work for is planning on buying 3 DVX100B's this spring. So i am desperately trying to put together a info package on why 2 HVX200's are soooo much better. any advice is much appreciated.
  7. I was reading the official panasonic specs on the HVX200, and it says that the filter diameter is 82mm. I imagine that this is not a typo, and that panasonic has decided to change the filter size. Seeing as the college i work for has a nice 72mm telephoto converter, i am trying to find info about a step down ring that would let me use 72mm filters on the 82mm HVX200. I am not to worried about getting a vinetting effect with the telephoto converter, but with a 72mm wideangle lense and a step down ring vinetting could be a problem. if anyone has experience with step down ring or knows why panasonic has changed their thread size, please write back.
  8. I have been looking at the Variable frame rate system used by the VariCam, and i am wondering just how similar the system on the HVX200 will be. The VariCam VTR will always record 60fps, no matter what frame rate the camera is set at. Will the HVX200 do the same pull down conversions when recording in the 720 progressive variable frame rate mode? And I have heard that the HVX200 will not be as flexible, in regards to selecting your frame rates. Unlike the Varicam which you can select any frame rate from 4fps to 60fps. Does anyone know what frame rates are available to chose from on the HVX200? The Varicam also allows changes in the frame rate while recording; will it be possible to ramp with the HVX200 or are you stuck with a frame rate until you cut? On the Varicam the controls for ramping are on the body of the camera; I have not seen any controls for this on the pictures of the HVX200 body. This leads me to belive that to change the frame rate settings you will need to go to the menu; and therfore adjusting frame rates while shooting will be impossible. :(
  9. I am very new to the world of recording directly to a hard drive via a firewire cable. I have been told that with the HVX200, i would be able to use a regular 7200rpm external firewire hard drive designed for use with a computer, to record HD footage from the camera. I have also been told that this can be done without any P2 card in the camera. This all seems far to good to be true, but if i could record HD footage with a $300 hard drive (so long as i had a ac outlet nearby), I would purchase the camera without any P2 cards and wait for the price to drop on SD memory before before i got one of the huge cards. So again the type of hard drive that i am hoping to use is a LaCie D2 7200rpm with a tansfer rate of 64MB per second, and not a fire store hard drive that would cost much more. I am quite certain it would be impossible to record 1080@24p, but if i could record the 720@24p i would still be very stoked. Thanks for bearing with my ignorance on this subject.
