  1. My motto has always been "adapt and overcome."
  2. Shooting video with an onboard LCD. I have a 27" Sony Broadcast reference monitor that I take on paying gigs only.
  3. Hi Stephen, I have given it some VERY serious thought. That is one of my options and it has already been discussed. I have a cople of names that we are looking at. Declan Quinn, Binod Pradhan (India), Freddie Francis.
  4. Joshua, David, Rolfe, Michael, thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the positive reinforcement and suggestions. David said it all best. "Irrational fear". Like stage fright. I have a lot of that going into this deal. I have some Super 8 experience and 35mm stills experience and I have thought that process through. I actually try to think 35mm lighting when shooting with the XL2. I am always asking myself, "can I make this look better?" or "am I lighting it correctly." I always try to play the Devils advocate with my work. I never go by the monitor. I don't trust it. I only use it as a reference tool for composition. The larger viewing surface shows things that I don't see in the viewfinder. I have started a binder with 35mm notes that I have been collecting. This helps a lot. Again, I really appreciate your help, suggestions and comments.
  5. I NEVER trust ANYONE else except myself for my equipment. I thought I had some presentation equipment covered in my equipment trailer. Guess what? The trailer disappeared with all the gear. Insurance man said I was covered because the trailer wasn't parked at my residence or place of business! Scum bag! I cover myself so I don't have to rely on anyone else. 6. I have shot a couple music videos on the Canon XL2 in 24p. The look is awesome. I also tweaked all the configurations of the camera to get the look I wanted. Gamma, pedestal, knee, so forth. I then work it in FCP to polish it. It's not totally 35mm looking but it's close enough for the clients. A PL adaptor and running some Arri lenses would really make it stand out.
  7. Hi all, I have been asked to DP a music video on 35mm, in a foreign country later this summer with a major music celebrity. I have not committed to it as yet. I know I can do this project. I have a intermediate knowledge of lighting, filters and lens setups. I am a bit nervous about it though, it's a big project with a lot of money on the line. I am a very quick study with just about any kind of equipment. I have studied 35mm in theory but have yet to put it into practice. I would be working with an Arri 435 and full crew. I have been shooting with a Canon XL2. I am currently working on one feature and have two more lined up, one will be 35mm. The music video will be shot between the second and third film. Does anyone have any advice or tips on making this transition to 35mm? I am genuinely interested in hearing from you. Thanks for your time and help
  8. Mooresville filmmaker inks a three-film deal May 20, 2006 - (Mooresville, NC) ?Mooresville resident and filmmaker Tim Vogel, has signed a three film deal and more, with platinum record producer Dr. Freeze, as Director of Photography, Assistant Director, Associate Producer, and Assistant Editor. Vogel will be doing the principal photography for three movies being filmed between now and the end of the summer. A link with trailers and treatments will be available shortly. Stay tuned. Vogel is currently working with May 13th Pictures' Dr. Freeze on the first-time Director's horror film "Easter Lake" in Boone, NC for the next 3-4 weeks. Vogel has already shot several scenes in the Hickory area as part of the ongoing project. The film is currently in negations with a major Hollywood studio for release and distribution, with a targeted release date and premier of Oct. 31st in LA, NY, and Hickory, NY. The film is being shot entirely on digital cameras and in Black and White, using a Canon XL2 with 20X, 14X, and 3X lenses in B & W. Additionally, the majority of the night time shooting will be shot with a Sony Handy Cam using Nightvision. Vogel said, "I have been very impressed with what I have seen to date, it's a very innovative project utilizing some VERY talented new comers to acting. It's similar to the "Blair Witch Project" and just as scary. I am very impressed with Freeze, he is not on the cutting edge of anything, he is creating a new edge, a new benchmark in film making." Vogel went on to say, ?With the advent of new technologies in the industry, film cameras are being shelved, plus with the added cost of film stock and film processing it makes digital production a more cost effective way of getting images to the theater. Film stock will only be used once in this project, from the editorial process on computers, straight to film for print production. Because we are entirely in black and white we won?t need the required color correction processes.? Freeze is well known for his producing hit songs for artists such as Bell Biv DeVoe, Color Me Badd, and Michael Jackson. The other two films, currently in pre-production, include "Game Shac", a comedy, and a remake of the Woody Allen movie. ?Take the Money and Run?." Freeze is extremely pleased to have Vogel on his projects stating, ?Tim is bringing a lot of talent and experience to the films and we are really pleased with the work he has done so far. It?s awesome. It?s a real education process for me as well.? He added, ?I don?t want anyone else shooting my films.? Vogel is the President of Attractions USA, based in Mooresville, providing video and film production services to the NC film industry and area businesses. Attractions USA also provides Web development services with clients such as the Town of Mooresville, Carolina Beer Company, Ryan Newman Motorsports and Penske Racing South. Vogel also has many credits for high end TV Commercials, industrials and other programming in the area including the fund raising video "To Win Your Heart" which starred NASCAR Driver's Ryan Newman, Bobby Allison and others. The video help to raise over $30,000 for the SCAN centers in Iredell County. www.stocksfortots.com
  9. Thanks nathan Lighting is limited. Being low budget we are going with the natural light flodding through the old knocked out prison windows. Then in post we create the movie's style or "look" with higher contrasts and a bit of filtering. The old walls are a light yellow. There is a lot of sunlight that comes through. If we get an investor on board we will be able to shoot this place and work at night. Just take a few 12K's and point them at the building from the outside and have some silks in place to difuse the light. The titling effect I did in a second post. Using FCP I was able to "Luma Key" the video layer which allowed the letters to come through but not through the bars. Neat little trick. We will be shooting with 2 dvx100A's and two Canon XL2's. One of the XL2's is mine and I will have it with a steadicam. That will be a busy camera unit. We will be doing 16:9 / 24p on the Canon's and 16:9 on the Panasonics. We only have the place until January, when the state comes in to demolish it. I will be filming that process. I will be directing, producing and editing the end title sequences. It will be a mini-movie unto itself. It will incorporate the buildings demise.
  10. Tech Inc Productions and Attractions USA begin principal photography on Nov. 26th for 10-days of shooting at an abandoned state prison in Huntersville, NC. The prison will be the ?star? of the film. A series of ?teaser? trailers were shot a couple weeks ago by our DP Ramon and myself. The Director/Writer starred as the tortured POW. He was almost really tortured. He did suffer for his art. The temps were in the upper 40?s to low 50?s, he was barefoot on a concrete floor being dragged through paint chips, dirt and debris. The prison had not been used in 10-years and is 60+ years old. The state will demolish it in Jan. and we plan to film that as well. Links to the trailers: http://www.attractionsusa.com/trailers.htm Click on any of the TOLERANCE links. The official site is located at www.techincproductions.com You can read all about the story line. The movie will have a ?non-typical? Hollywood ending.
