Hello, Has anyone clipped on NDs on Zeiss Super Speed MKIII (S16). The front lens diameter is 80mm and I am trying to find a solution for small ND filters to clip onto the lens (circular ones). Will 82mm work or do you think it might vignette on the 9.5mm lens from the set? I know there is 95mm clamp-on adapter but 95mm filters are also harder to find. I found this link but not sure if it will works. https://rafcamera.com/clamp-80mm-to-m82x0-75f Thanks, Boris

Hi, Working as camera assistant I came across combination of RED Monstro 8K VV and Sigma FF lenses. All good, except 14mm… That marks beginning of Compact Matte Box. I have found this type of product very useful in various fast pacing situations as wll great for gimbals and other lightweight setups. www.nd9.eu Available for 80/95/110/114 mm size as well 14mm Sigma prime. I work on an unscripted show where we primarily shoot exterior interviews but occasionally will move inside and use a window as our background when the weather is bad. I’d like to be able to ND the window to reduce the amount of light needed on talent and am thinking of having a couple of wood frames built out of 1x3 strips of lumber so we could quickly drop in different levels of ND. Being that the window is only a couple feet behind talent (out of focus but barely), is this a good approach or would we see lots of reflections, etc.? We don’t have time to apply the gel directly to the window as the light changes frequently, and don’t have the budget to get hard NDs. I think a large net would be too close and in-focus to disappear completely. We also can’t drop a polarizer for the camera to mitigate reflections because talent always wears sunglasses. The window is always shaded, however, so we’ve had no reflection issues with the glass itself.

Hey guys, I'm looking into Tiffen's matteboxable Multi Rota Variable ND, as a way to keep a more consistent aperture when shooting outdoors on days when the sun is constantly dipping in and out of the clouds. And I was wondering if anyone here has used it before, and can comment on their experience with it? I built my own variable NDs for stills cameras back in the day (by combining off the shelf filters), so I'm well aware of the usual caveats of the cross-hatching. I'd love to hear some feedback on how the Tiffen MRT goes for colour cast though - if it has any? And if so, whether it's an issue? Where the MRT strikes me as useful is used in conjunction with conventional NDs, so that you could set a base exposure with a combination of regular ND and the MRT set at 4-stops of compensation, and then you'd be able to open up two stops (it's minimum setting) if the clouds roll in, or close down two stops if the sun bursts out in all it's glory - all while keeping two stops down from the filter's maximum compensation of 8 stops, which starts to push towards the funkiness and cross hatching you can get when you take these variable NDs too far. I think my theory is sound, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually put it to the test, and can comment on the unit's performance? Cheers, Mark

Folks, I have a practical location where one of the key story elements is a window in a living room. Since we're in Southern California I need to gel the window so it doesn't go "nuclear" while we're shooting. What is the best way to apply a sheet of ND gel to the window? The assumption is that we'll start with a Lee ND/0.9 4' gel sheet because that's what we think we can get inexpensively. If there are better/easier/cheaper options I'd love to hear about them. Using "big" lights isn't an option for budgetary and crew experience reasons. The house is a 1940's style rambler with "old" electrical circuits, so I'm very power limited right off the bat. Thanks in advance, Stuart ---------------------------- illuma.blogspot.com

What is the largest size of a variable ND filter available and can they be fitted on cine lenses? Thinking quick and simple for on the fly shooting where time matters (and staying clean). In my experience I have not heard of it, but opening up the question to an entire community may be successful! Examples of cine lenses would be Cooke S4s or super speeds.
