Working at a Rental House You Rent From
Jingtian Wang posted a topic in General DiscussionA bit of background, I'm justing starting out in my career and I'm looking to learn the equipment and make some contacts. I was talking to a local rental house about a upcoming rental, and they told me about staff on vacation and them being busy (to explain why they didn't reply in time). This lead me to the idea of helping out for few days to gain experience as I'm free around christmas, no school and aren't much productions I can work on either (most of them are German speaking and I don't speak German well enough). The problem is that since I'm also a customer there, would this complicate anything? Have anyone worked at and rented from the same rental house? There's only two rental houses in Frankfurt Main, and I've rented from both, so I can't find a new house. Any tip is well appreciated.
Copyright Collectives and Cinematographers
Jacob Mitchell posted a topic in Business PracticesHey all, I was recently drafting my personal contract which I was taking from Imagos template contract for DPs. Here is the template: https://www.imago.org/images/pdfs/CINEMATOGRAPHERS/MODEL%20CONTRACT%20FOR%20AUTHORSHIP%20-%20version.22.01.08.pdf . In article 7.2, its speaks to Copyright Collective Socities. I understand the purpose of these copyright collectives, but after some searching, did not find any socities of note in America that cover motion picture professionals. Since this is from Imago, are these Socities more common in Europe than America? Does anyone have any more info on joining a Copyright collective?
Rental inventory software
Nicolas Lastschenko posted a topic in Business PracticesHi all, I know that a very recent post asks the same question,.. but I have different & more specific requirements: I have recently been hired in as a consultant to the biggest (not very big) rental in a country with barely any.. to help them streamline their activities, professionalize their technicians and grow. The site is small and the inventory not very big. Though they do have more than decent equipment and plan to invest in more, most of their "technicians" have very limited knowledge and know-how. They still do everything by hand and don't use barcoding, ..but the growing industry and increase in rentals is slowly starting to catch up with them. I am looking to digitalise their inventory and implement using barcodes, and as such am looking for software in which I can load my inventory and track the ins and outs of items through barcode scanning. Ideally, i would prefer a NON-Cloud system (most available today seem online); internet connection is not always a given here. .. do any of you know of any options? ideally systems that come bundled with a barcode printer + scanner(s) + software? ..maybe even one that comes with its own computer? (plug&play) or do any of you have recommendations for these different things? Basically I need something simple, straightforward and not too complicated for a small camera/lights/grip rental company. Any advice welcome! PLEASE - No sales reps pitching product!
Agents: Worth it or not?
Kevin Martin posted a topic in Students and New FilmmakersHowdy, y'all- I'm a 27 year-old DP in the New York/New Jersey area and as I've been looking for more and more work over the years I feel that I have been hitting a wall. I come from a G&E background so I've been more used to forming relationships with DPs, owner/ops, and production companies, but I find getting work as a DP to be a different ballgame, so I wanted to know what the pros and cons of hiring an agent are- do they actually find you work, is the cost of hiring someone offset by the increase in gigs, is it better to wait until you join local 600 to hire an agent versus having one in the non-union world, what are some better agencies for less known DPs, is it better to hire someone local or can they be on the other side of the country, etc. etc. Any advice would be appreciated because anything's gotta be better than blindly giving resumes to people who don't know you or scouring Mandy.com. Thanks in advance!
Short-Term Production Insurance
Bill DiPietra posted a topic in General DiscussionHi everyone. I'm going to be starting a short film soon and I'm in the process of getting a quote for short-term production insurance. On the application it asks if there are any pyrotechnics involved. Are they only referring to explosions, fire and the like, or would a fog machine with a water-based solution also fall under that category? Thanks for any help.
What's the future like for AVID?
Jordan Watson posted a topic in Business PracticesHey guys, I've heard from numerous people that Avid is in financial trouble. Is this due to programs such as Final Cut Pro? Are they not marketing themselves enough?
Getting into film without a film degree
Amie Dibbern posted a topic in General DiscussionHello, everyone! So I'm a fifth-year college student, but I only realized my "calling" as a cinematographer this past December. I'm a little surprised and upset that it took this long to realize that this is what I need to do with my life, but...that's the way life goes, I guess. I've spoken with some of my teachers in the theater department, and many of them insist that I don't need a film degree to be a cinematographer. However, I can't help but feel as though I'll be at a disadvantage. I'm not getting the training I need to do what I love and want to do. I'm not making the connections I need to be making to be successful. I'm willing to work my tail off, and I want to learn, but breaking into the business, only to learn when I get there, seems a little odd to me. If there's any advice anyone can give me as to what I should consider (short of transferring again and more or less scrapping the education I've gotten so far, because I can't afford to do that), I'd appreciate it greatly!
