  1. Dig out your old SD CCD non rolling shutter camcorders and start creating content ? YouTube follows Netflix by reducing video stream quality in Europe
  2. Hello everyone! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4HtBBgGiacMtrgqOK1WClQ/videos A bit of shameless self-promotion here but it's closely related to this forum so I guess that's ok. I created a new youtube channel where I will try to study the technical side of cinematography under a 50% engineering 50% cinematography angle. I already uploaded a first batch of videos dealing with Dynamic Range. Any comment, good or bad, advice, outrage... is welcomed ! I love heated debates.
  3. Hello Everyone! First time posting in the forum, don't know if I'm doing it right but after being a fan of the site I figured I'd actually ask a question for once. Currently working on a Youtube Channel for a friend of mine, and started looking up people I admired at least from a lighting standpoint. This youtube channel would be lower budget and shot inside my friends home. So house power is a must as I'll be low on funds and manpower. Attached below are my references, (Braless and Decoded) was wondering about how to achieve this look and what lighting do you think was used. Most likely it would be shot on the BlackMagic Cinema Camera. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Much love - Armani
  4. Hi All, I can't seem to get to the bottom of these issues. I've posed the question(s) on the forum for Sony Vegas, but no answers were really helpful or solved my problem... Also, I would truly appreciate any advice on how to take a good scan of Super 8 film and get it on to YouTube or Vimeo with accurate and faithful color representation, no compression artifacts, and best HD quality. Ok, here goes: I've shot both Tri-X 7266 and Vision 50D with my Nikon R8. I've had the Tri-x scanned at two separate facilites (one west coast, one east coast). The Vision 50D was scanned at the west coast facility. All scans were done at 2k to the Apple Pro Res 422 .mov format. This .mov format can be handled by Sony Vegas Pro (version 13). However, when ever I render to any .mp4 file type (different resolutions, frameserving to Handbrake, etc.) the reds shift from fire engine red to a cranberry red. Look at the image in my Dropbox account below. The upper window is the Vegas timeline preview, where the colors are correct after tweaking brightness/contrast and color balance (the scans were "flat" scans). (You will also see that the Computer RGB to Studio RGB fx is disabled in Vegas. Typically you use that when sending a file to YouTube, but just ignore that, since the color shift is very apparent whether the render is done with or without that effect.) The lower window is the .mp4 file being played back on the same (calibrated) monitor. Notice the big color difference in the red truck. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1mdsudkgyo2d1ps/Vision_50D_colors.jpg?dl=0 Any ideas if the issue arises because I'm using an Apple Pro Res PC on a Windows PC? I've read forum threads elsewhere where people claim that renders on Apple computers (with Final Cut Pro) keep colors true without a hassle. Another issue is that no matter what my workflow or render type (frameserving from Vegas, Avisynth, Handbrake, etc.), the grain in the Tri-X scan is really just mangled and the compression artifacts are just unacceptable. I finally just pushed the original scan file to YouTube (which it accepts, btw), but it's no where close to the beautiful projected image. Here is that scan: https://youtu.be/JWfcbewW1O4 Any advice here? How do you get high quality, true-color scans on YouTube or Vimeo? What is your workflow? Do you ask the scanner facility to scan to a different codec? I feel like I'm missing something.... Thank you for any help!
  5. Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, so I hope the following question does not get marked as spam or anything like that Basically, I make music videos on Youtube. Unfortunately I am down a camera man which means I have to make all the shots as stationary shots and try to spice things up in editing. Here is the link to my latest video: I was hoping I could get some advice on how to improve my cinematography given the current circumstances, can I achieve more interesting shots filming on just my own? or any other suggestions that could improve the production of my videos? Thought it would be stupid not to seek advice from the pros! I am just a musician! Thanks! Ben
  6. So I found this video on the Kickstarter blog and the "advice" these people give is a perfect example as to why the democratization of filmmaking has been its downfall. The most disturbing comment comes at 1:01. Just listen to what this guy says. I almost put my fist through the computer screen...
  7. Hi, I'm making a short film next year, and one of the scenes features two people walking the streets of a city, much like this ( see video below ) i was wondering if anyone could tell me what is the best way to light the actors to get that city night feel? or do i need any other lights at all, will the ambient light of the city do? keeping in mind my rig will consist of a glide cam, and a Canon c100 mk 2. so not much room for big lighting rigs moving with the camera, also its quite low budget film. any thoughts? Thanks Gabe
  8. I have been having an issue when color grading lately with the C300. After the grade, most blacks that are below 40 IRE seem to be artifacting like crazy on youtube. Whereas I don't see this from other people's work. Ive tried these encode settings in adobe media encoder, Quicktime MOV, h264 55'000 kbps 1920 x 818 Quicktime MOV, h264 35'000 kbps 1920 x 818 Quicktime MOV, h264 25'000 kbps 1920 x 818 Quicktime MOV, Prores 444 1920 x 818 But all of them just aren't cutting it and I dont know what I'm missing. My blacks are generally not brought down to 0 because the director wants a low contrasty look and some scenes were shot very dimly with only one LED to light the scene. On the other hand, we've lit darker scenes with several 1k's and Litepanel LEDs and while the highlights and midtones held up the blacks still artifacted hard. Here is an unlisted link to a test video I made. Please don't share outside of the community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d3WQT4hcN4 Any and all info would be much appreciated!

  13. Hi there, I would really appreciate some advice! I have a youtube channel, and I currently shoot my videos with a Canon VIXIA HF R200. It does the job, however I definitely need an upgrade. The battery life sucks, the exposure is crazy and always needs to be adjusted, and the colouring is sometimes weird. I have been trying to figure out what camera other youtubers use, and notice a lot of them use Canon DSLR's such as the T3i. I am wondering if I would be better off getting a camcorder, or a DSLR? I am open to all brands, however I was looking at the VIVIXA HF G30 for camcorders, or maybe a canon t4i or canon 60D? I want something that's easy to use, I would like it to have autofocus, and I want a nice bright image quality, I like to have glowing skin in my videos and have everything bright and happy looking. I like the idea of the ease of a camcorder, however I feel I might have more creative control with a DSLR + it would double as a camera :) my price range is up to $2000 my youtube channel is www.youtube.com/holistichabits if you would like to see the video quality right now and make a judgment call on what needs to be fixed. Any advice would help. Any suggestions?? Thank you so much for taking the time to read and/or reply :) -Sarah
  14. Inspired by devinsupertramp, a Youtuber, and his amazing steadicam operation skills, I threw a small event together so I could film it and practice the technique. Now I'm looking for honest and professional feedback. I would like to improve my cinematography skills so please be as critical as you wish. I used a Glidecam 2000 HD, but if anyone else has a better recommendation, I'm all ears.
