  1. I'm considering buying this Bolex I found at a local camera store. I've been wanting to try 16mm for a while now, and this feels like a good opportunity to purchase. I was wondering if anyone could highlight some pros/cons with this model? I believe it is just the H16 Reflex. It sounds like it runs fine and everything seems to be working, but regardless I plan on sending it to get serviced just to make sure everything is working properly. I'm only aware of Du-All Camera (if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know). Are there any specific limitations or things I should be cautious of? The lenses seem decent, but I think I'd like to buy some better primes later on. Thanks in advance!
  2. Hey everyone, I've had a handful of rolls developed from my Bolex H16 RX, and all have had a vertical purple line throughout each frame on the left hand side. There's a faint line on the right hand side as well, but less prominent. The line is more apparent in underexposed footage. Image attached of an underexposed clip. Anyone know what this might be? Some sort of a light leak, or is something scratching the film? Thanks in advance for any help.

  4. Anyone know of someone who converts bolex from c mount to pl in europe?
  5. I came across this teaser for a documentary by Alexandre Favre called Bolex: The Last Employee and thought the readers of this forum might appreciate it. https://vimeo.com/150185992 The contemporary footage was shot using a Bolex modified for super 16, and the audio was recorded on a Nagra. The historical footage and commentary is interesting. Particularly the bit about small camera assembly lines being staffed by women, who were presumed to be more agile than men. The level of precision and craftsmanship that went into these machines is pretty inspiring. I'm looking forward to seeing the full length documentary when it's released.

  7. Hi, I am planning on shooting a short film on my Bolex B8. It takes double run 8mm film. I want to shoot in black and white (film stock I can find for my camera includes Fomapan reversal 100, Fomapan negative 100, and Fomapan negative T200). I am relatively new to shooting on 8mm and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me, especially in regards to the best way to light for B/W 8mm? I hope to get as sharp an image possible, I understand that shooting at a higher aperture will help, and that using newer lenses will also help (although I do not plan on purchasing new lenses). I love high contrast images but I am not sure how well I will be able to achieve this with 8mm. Is there anything in particular I should keep in mind when I am lighting? Is one of the film stocks I mentioned better to use than the others? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  8. Hi Gang - I am sure this has been asked many times before but what lenses would you recommend for a Bolex H16 Reflex (non super 16)? Currently I have a Kern-Paillard 25mm (no RX markings on it), but I was looking for something with a wider view angle. Maybe like a 10mm? Thanks a lot! Gabi

  10. Greetings everyone! My name is Derick and I'm new to the forums. I'm a filmmaker based in Philly and I work primarily with super 8 and 16mm film. I recently acquired an Angenieux 12-120mm Type C with the C Mount to use on my Bolex rex 4. Now from my understanding, the type c is made to be RX compatible, which is great. My only question/concern is, all of the images i've seen of this lens online shows the lens with the silver cupped mount with the engraved 'BOLEX RX" or something along those lines. The thing is, mine doesnt have the so called "silver cup" with that engraving. It just seems to be a normal c mount that screws right onto my camera. My question is, is my lens still properly calibrated for the reflex prism although it doesnt have this engraved mount? Were there different variations of the TYPE C lens that were made throughout the years, making mine different but the same as far as collimation? Sorry if this question has been asked before, I just can't seem to find the answer and I dont want to eat up a bunch of film and find out all of the images are soft. Thanks in advance, Derick
  11. Hey All, I'm looking for a Bolex H16 SBM in good condition. These seem to have become quite rare and are sold on ebay for ridiculous prices above the 3000$ mark. So if any of you can offer me a good deal for one, I'd be very happy. I'm located in Germany and willing to pay for shipping. Thank you!
  12. Sorry for repeating. I think this is more proper to be here. - Hello, Recently I bought the bolex H16 rex5. But I am not sure if the viewfinder is okay. From its appearance it is 10x viewfinder. Hope I can get some advices from seniors here. First of all it has lever on the side but I can see the image very well when it is vertical position! And the horizontal position, it become very dark. But still I can see the image and specially bottom 30% parts become really dark. When I remove the lens and rotate turret, from the front side I can recognize lights through the prism glass. The light comes from viewfinder behind(usually where my eye should place there), so I can imagine the film will be damaged if I put the lever vertical position. When I change the lever horizontal position, I can sense from the front side the light is blocked somehow. Actually still I can see the dark image through the viewfinder. Also what I found strange is, when I turn the lever horizontal position I have to rotate lever forward direction(lens side, not to the eye side). I checked all bolex images, it seems completely opposite from other cameras or manual pictures. Here the summaries and my questions, 1. Is it possible the viewfinder lever works the other way around that horizontal position is closed but vertical position is openning the view? 2. Even if it is possible, but is it still normal that I can see the darken images through the closed viewfinder?(horizontal) 3. If the viewfinder has a problem, can I use the side-attachable viewfinder instead of this?(if so, I might block original viewfinder to avoid fogging damages) Thanks for reading, Best,yj

  14. Hello, (A summary of my questions are bullet pointed below the first paragraph) I am looking at buying a Bolex with the purpose of doing a few short films and music videos over the next 12 months . This will also be the first 16mm film camera I own and I good starting point before I move on to a 16sr3 advanced. I have done my research on the camera and most answers say the SBM, EBM and Rex 4 and 5 models are the best to convert to super 16. However I feel I need to ask a more basic question on what people in this forum would suggest, as I can ask more direct questions and hopefully get more specific answers. I know the basic benefits of converting to Super 16, but I'm more interested in what bolex model people would suggest is the best for the job. I could spend between £1,200-£1,500 on the camera but obviously if a cheaper option is just as good that'd be fantastic. I have seen some super 16 SBM for around $2,999 so yes! So here are my questions in summary. -What is the best model in my price range to buy to convert to super 16? -This may sound stupid but I know the issues with the beamsplitter and the widening of the viewfinder with conversion, but can a PL mount be put on the camera without it having undergone the conversion, as have read and seen people putting Zeiss super speeds on these cameras. - If the new faceplate reads bolex H super 16, what bolex model was that before the conversion (again may sound stupid). I do have more questions on the topic, but once I get a reply I may ask more ahah. I am hoping to do a project in late June this year so If anyone has any information they might think is helpful that would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Will

  17. Hello Everyone, Well last year I was selling a bunch of gear before moving to South America. Some of it never sold and I'm back in the States for a short visit and still need to go ahead and try to get rid of it instead of letting it sit in my storage unit. I need to have all this sold before May 12th. I've tried to price them as low as I can to get rid of them quickly. There is some wiggle room for some of the more expensive items. Reasonable deals can be made if buying several items. There are no shipping costs for local pickup in Valrico, Florida. 20. Dear friends, I am sorry to part with this camera - but it is necessary! This tool Kingsman. The kit includes a body, an objective (it is capable of 5-), and a motor with 25 FPS The camera needs love, care and work. I checked the motor - it works, but I did not do any footage from this camera. but I do not think that something is wrong with her. I want for her $ 1200, but without a cassette and a bottom handle. Although this is also debatable. http://dom2.tw/ http://dom2.tw/ http://dom2.tw/
  21. Hello everyone, I will be filming a shortfilm with my H16 EL in a couple of weeks. I am planning to light one interior scene with an HMI 1,2KW and some practical lights. I live in Europe so light is 50Hz. Given that shutter angle is 170º, is there any way to avoid lights from flicker at 24fps or 25fps? (24x360)/170=50,82 If my maths are correct, 24fps would give the closest shutter speed to 1/50. Best, Marcos
  22. Hello, It seems I can't attach my 400ft mag bolex motor to the mag. Position is correct (with the motor cable pointing to the mag) but even pressing strongly the motor remains unlocked and I am not able to turn clockwise. Are there two versions of motors or some part is missing from mine? I attach pictures of both. Marcos
  23. I’ve created a hybrid… combining 8mm and 16mm parts. I recently discover the joys of the reflex viewer up stream from the lens iris. This allows the image to stay bright, not affected by the iris. So, I took converted super16 and machined out an 8mm film block. The lens’s frame mask was converted to super16 aspect ratio. It all seems to line up… anybody see any potential problems???
